I'm doing my first course on leadership and have to write an essay on my personal leadership style. I was really struggling with it because I've never been in a leadership job role and thought I didn't have a leadership style! Thank you for this video, it's helped me more than any of my lectures have, and it's helped me understand that I do have a leadership style.
Hi Alex! Fellow New Yorker here😊. A few years ago I was thrown into a leadership position when three mid-management employees quit or/and resigned within two weeks. The existing leadership did not- would not, chose not to, or was not skilled enough ( I still don't know which one applies to this day), to cultivate me to lead my team. Since then, I've turned to platforms such as RUclips and others to hone my skill. It's been a wondrous, sometimes painfully educational journey..lol. Present-day I turn to you and your gifts of profound and practical leadership teaching. I must say, you've been one of the most impactful Teachers I've come to identify with. I don't know where I would be in my efforts if God didn't lead me to you. Thank you so much for your compassionate confident and thorough style. Your gifts are truly valued with this freshman subbie!!!!💥 I've recently been promoted to a top Management position. I look forward to the challenge and only aspire to lead beyond well and affect positive change. I hope to impact the lives of my followers in a life-changing & empowering way, so that they may also meet their purpose daily and into the future.
Thank's Alex for your very well put together videos on communication/ leadership. An area I find interesting that relates to leader/followership is Therapeutic Hope. Three main factors for this are: 1:The compelling vision that provides the motivation and desire for change. 2: A pathway showing how the vision can be achieved through specific, actionable steps. 3: Confidence in the leader that followers will be supported, cared for and guided towards the vision.
Coming from the STEM fields with no exposure to this subject, this social science lecture was an excellent and comprehensive coverage about leadership. I wish I knew this 30 years ago!!!
I'm involved with a job search assistance program for seniors (SCSEP); and as part of the program we are assigned to do training exercises that involve watching videos that can help us with finding jobs and being more successful at work. In my opinion, some of the videos we watch suck, some are OK, and some are pretty great. This video is one of the ones I thought was really great! I took lots of notes.
The presentation is captive of the essence of each theoretical framework overview and introduction. It is easy to refresh your memory if you are embedded in the scholarly background knowledge of the subject matter. As someone who studied the theory in depth I found it easily refreshing.
I had always been taught everyone is simply born with a tendency toward a certain leadership style. It was so HELPFUL to hear you say that the best way to approach management is to know the needs of your team, than use the most appropriate style to meet their needs. Leadership styles can be LEARNED like any other discipline. Yay Greenleaf! Thank you!

Thank you for your encouragement. It's a pretty specialized topic but I'm hoping the people who are looking for something like this will find it to be helpful.
I think for the 3 leader styles of autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire, using some combination of this, tailoring it to a situation, seems to be the best strategy, rather than rely on one or identify solely with one, though one can have tendencies toward one of them due to one's situation/environment. I think an error was made though in classifying the leader styles. I think laissez-faire should really be two categories: (1) mentor-hero and (2) laissez-faire or libertarianism. The mentor-hero style means the hero is the one in charge, but he gets help and advice from the mentor. This is more of Warren Buffett's style, from what I have heard, as being an "over the shoulder" approach to management. So, I would rather there be 4 leadership style categories than 3.
Democratic Leader is positive reinforcement to the followers. Leaders always set an examples and create leaders too. Even they leave the other person will take over
The meaning of effective Leadership Effective leadership is the ability to successfully influence and support a team or group of people. It’s important to point out there’s much more to effective leadership than just delegating from the top. A great leader is also a great negotiator. And a negotiator is only successful if they have a deep understanding of what they value, and an ability to convey it to their counterpart(s). Adapting one’s leadership styles in order to do this is essential, giving a negotiator the opportunity to know when to hold firm to a position and when cede it in the interest of gaining a stronger agreement. This is a fantastic presentation. I love your style as it is very understandable. I have worked in all of these leadership environments. Seeing more of these types of videos I believe would be helpful, as it helps you figure out where you are in the process as an employee or in a leadership role.
The Blake, Mouton, and McCanse Managerial Grid reminds me of a video clip I'd seen of Jordon Peterson describing the clashes between persons high in Conscientiousness (task oriented) and high in Agreeableness (people oriented), and the challenges faced by individual persons who, within themselves, are both highly Conscientious and also highly Agreeable. I suppose the persons like those have the potential to grow into highly adaptive leaders (Situational Leaders?), but it's definitely not going to be easy; those are hard concerns to balance.
Leadership is the exercise of social influence to achieve an chosen outcome. It is the social aspect of management. The idea of a manager-leader divide is nonsensical. The divide in mind is, I suspect, the 'foreman'-manager divide. But we all like to push job titles upwards these days, so maybe that's it. But the upshot of my first characterization of leading is such that if you are leading but not managing, you are NOT leading; the corollary being, if you are managing but not leading, you are NOT managing. The person managing/leading has a job to do: make the team focused and productive that is they serve the productive purpose of the team and in so doing serve their employer. Thus I can say the same for 'servant-leader' as I did regading managing. If you are leading but not serving, you are not leading; and if you are serving but not leading, you are not serving. A great illustration of this is the job of a field officer in the army: job no 1? Look after the troops. Serve them (while doing so by giving orders to achieve sustainable production of enemy degradation. As per Pat Lencioni, 'servant-leading' is a redundancy.

Great work. For me, leadership is mostly distributed among team members, rather than the act of one person. Remember: these theories have little empirical support, and are mostly personal observations of "I did it my way" corporate bosses.
Most of the models and theories in this video were born out of academic research that studied real leaders through empirical research that was initially published in peer-reviewed journals. I cited some of those book and articles in the description and I mentioned them along the way. However, it is true that most of the leadership theories we hear about in popular press books or from professional speakers are from authors who are simply creating a model out of their own individual experience.

I am listening, hoping I can pick up quickly some tools/help dealing wiith severe family conflict, that needs to be confronted, in the midst of one member with terminal health problems. I'm sure I am a part of our problems. However, I seem to be the one who is blamed for all of it, literally all. Looking like the proverbial "common denominator". I have been willing to look at my roll, take responsibility for my part, but, I am the only one willing to do that. Life for me has to change. I started with listening to the communication compilation Coach put together, it's very good. My communication skills are weak. It's strange, I think I am the leader here, not by choice. I do not think a couple of RUclips vids are going to fix anything, but, I hope I can pick up quickly some bits and pieces to aid conflict resolution, and maybe a coming together differently, better than before. I have to be willing to accept that, my goal/hopes may not become reality. To fail, for all of us to fail, is a devastating possibility to contemplate.

Thank you, Claudia. I used to have more fillers when I first started public speaking but I made an effort to get rid of them. In fact, I made an old video about how to stop using filler words. By the way, I'm sure I still use fillers once in a while. A small number of fillers is totally fine and can add a conversational feel to a speaker's message. When people start to notice and count them, then that's a big distraction.

Alex, I follow your videos and use them in my lessons a lot. However, this one mixes leadership theories with leadership styles. I would have preferred that you kept them separate. Again, thank you for your great work.
Leadership _Styles_ (i.e., authoritarian, democratic, laissez-faire) is a traditional research area/theory on leadership. That theory says that there are 3 main styles of leadership. The theory was built over the decades using dozens of scholarly studies to articulate the details of each of those styles. In everyday language, people use the word _styles_ to mean all sorts of things, but in the area of leadership studies, the term _styles_ has a specific meaning and only refers to those three concepts. All 10 I've included in the video are clear-cut theories/models/research areas on leadership. In sum, the _leadership_ _styles_ perspective is not separate. It is a leadership theory/model/perspective just like all of the others. I want to be clear that this isn't my personal opinion. Virtually every leadership theory book I've ever opened includes the 3 key styles as a theory.

I think the theories I'd point out in this long video that might help are as follows: The section on "Leadership Skills" and both Vertical Dyad Linkage Model and the Leader-Member Exchange area of research. Those all talk about how to develop better interpersonal relationships and related dynamics with followers.

Would you consider transcendental leadership as a theory? If yes, do you know who started it? I have been reading about it and I cannot point out the main proponent of it.
Don't know much about it. But, from what I can tell, it's a leadership philosophy more than a theory. I don't know how many data-drive studies test its effectiveness. I could be wrong about that but I do know that it's not included in most of the credible leadership books out there. It seems like it mainly takes aspects of already-existing theory and research and combines them.

Higgens on Magnum PI seems a lassaiz-faire leadership style person, with sometimes expensive results.
That'a a great example. I'm only familiar with the original show but Higgins does fit that profile.

Hi Brenden. I don’t have any specific videos on teaching or coaching. It is an interesting topic and of course I do it personally. In someways, I hope that people will find the basic lessons and then look for a way to apply them to their own situation.

Alex, I follow your videos and use them in my lessons a lot. However, this one mixes leadership theories with leadership styles. I would have preferred that you kept them separate. Again, thank you for your great work.
Leadership _Styles_ (i.e., authoritarian, democratic, laissez-faire) is a traditional research area/theory on leadership. That theory says that there are 3 main styles of leadership. The theory was built over the decades using dozens of scholarly studies to articulate the details of each of those styles.
In everyday language, people use the word _styles_ to mean all sorts of things, but in the area of leadership studies, the term _styles_ has a specific meaning and only refers to those three concepts. All 10 I've included in the video are clear-cut theories/models/research areas on leadership. In sum, the _leadership_ _styles_ perspective is not separate. It is a leadership theory/model/perspective just like all of the others.
I want to be clear that this isn't my personal opinion. Virtually every leadership theory book I've ever opened includes the 3 key styles as a theory.

Hi, Elaina. I think the theories I'd point out in this long video that might help are as follows: The section on "Leadership Skills" and both Vertical Dyad Linkage Model and the Leader-Member Exchange area of research. Those all talk about how to develop better interpersonal relationships and related dynamics with followers.

Would you consider transcendental leadership as a theory? If yes, do you know who started it? I have been reading about it and I cannot point out the main proponent of it.
Don't know much about it. But, from what I can tell, it's a leadership philosophy more than a theory. I don't know how many data-drive studies test its effectiveness. I could be wrong about that but I do know that it's not included in most of the credible leadership books out there. It seems like it mainly takes aspects of already-existing theory and research and combines them.
