This is not my type of film. However, I'm very happy for Johnny Depp. If he's choosing the roles he's interested in, I'm all for it. Hollywood, in general, and Disney specifically treated him as guilty until proven innocent.

I'm a sucker for historic costume films, so a nice piece for escapism for me. Depp was married to Vanessa Paradis, so I think he would know some French to be half decent.

It's great that Johnny's back to doing movies after the crap he had to go through with the Heard Trial.

Jeanne du Barry was an excellent film and its highlight was definitely, Depp. Hearing him fluently talk French was a trip. I can see why some would think that the movie is feminist but it is nowhere near the level of an obnoxious Disney girl boss. Highly recommend it.

Glad to see you cleared up he was the King of France. He doesn't seem like he was too picky in recent years. Hopefully he should continue to make independent films and stay away from the showy big budget flops that Hollywood is going to continue to make.

I loved this movie, it’s a love story, I laugh and cried. In my opinion Maiwenn did an exelent choice to asked Johnny and to wait for him during the trial and was worth it, Johnny did an outstanding performance as the King Louis XV. The music is awesome and beautiful locations were the film was made. I went to the cinema twice on May 3rd and 4th to watch the movie, one time was not enough for me. ❤

I saw this like a year ago in theaters in France. Depp is fantastic, but the director/lead actress, Maewean, is self indulgent without the talent to carry the film.
Depp's French is pretty good too.

I saw this film . I liked it. It was different as Johnny depp films are. The film appeared to me like reading a beautiful love story novel. Lovely drawn out and the scenes I would picture in my mi d reading it. However you’re not quite accurate about her role. Yes she was used by her mother to get in with the royalty and paid her dues by du Barry to meet the king but it was up to her to keep him interested in her so her kept her and eventually falling in love with her. She ignored the royal family because she inew he loved her. She made him happy and always guessing. He loved her for that! Johnny is and always will be a character actor . He spittle and quite in this role. And he even saw a little Captain Jack. In a few looks and smirks. I like the film as a beautiful screen novel with the beauty and opulence of 28 the century France.

Should have been easy to get Johnny Depp, just tell him the part requires full face makeup and he's in. The man loves wearing makeup.

I doubt it. The movie's overall critical consensus was not great, and that impacts whether an actor is recognized.

Maiwenn is Luc Besson's ex wife. She's been a very prolific filmaker for the last 15 years. She's also known to be very agressive towards modern day Feminism, especialy the MeToo Movement.
Last year she threw hands on a left leaning editor in chief of a journal who used an interview of her to smeer Luc Besson as a "grapist".
