I don't feel like Automata have a protagonist, it need to be 3 to be complete. Usually, a story can be called the protagonist's journey, but Automata is like all three of their journeys

Unpopular opinion: I honestly like this version more than the in-game version. However, the in-game version is much more fitting since it's literally devola and popola singing it.
@@TheMUNDONOVO yeah but it probably won't have the same impact since the story of the game was designed so it can only be told through a video game. Especially when it comes to nier automata. Also, (spoiler warning) it will be hard to do the ending in animation because you as the player has to decide if you want Kaine to live or not and in the game, it will delete your safe file which is something that can not be recreated in animation.

Humanity made one last ditch effort to prevent extinction from White Choloronation (the disease that turns people into salt) by seperating their souls from their bodies but the project failed and the souls (Gestalts) took on sentience of their own and couldn't rejoin with thier bodies (Replicants). The androids, Devola and Popola, were designed to oversee the project operated smoothly but also failed when the Protagonist killed the Shadowlord, the first Gestalt. (Not quite 30 words, but I hope this proves some insight).

The project got more delayed than it was initially promised to the extremely stable Gestalt Human that is the Shadowlord. Shadowlord agreed to participate to project gestalt because his yonah immediately relapsing after touching Grimoire noir. but he waited for too long and decided to kidnap replicant yonah on his own and locked himself in the Shadowlord Castle.
Ok, so I don't remember everything, but here's basically the GIST. Drakengard happens - a world full of magic and dragons and all that, and for some reason, giant eldrich baby demons, and one giant eldrich mama demon, and they want to...manifest and take over reality? I can't remember exactly, but it's an apocalyptic situation for the world in Drakengard. The protagonist - Kaim - and his female red dragon - Angelus accidentally get transported to our world (in ENDING E of Drakengard 1), over TOKYO of all places, and fight the big mama demon thing in a final battle. They kill it, but the Japanese military shoots down Angelus with rockets. Kaim is nowhere to be seen. The mama demon's body disintegrates all over Tokyo and eventually spreads all over the world, but nothing seems to happen for a while...until people randomly start turning into SALT - which gets dubbed the "White Chloronation Syndrome". Basically, people come in contact with the particles of that demon mama, get asked by a mysterious voice if they choose power or death (I think?), and those who choose death get turned into salt. Those that choose power basically turn superhumman, get "red eyes", and become more or less a hive mind hell bent on...killing humanity? It's not clear what they actually wanted, but they were attacking humanity to achieve it. Some people theorize that Kaim ended up being one of the leaders of the "red eye" army (who is, in turn, dubbed "Red-eye" by humanity's forces). Eventually, they get destroyed, but not before humanity suffers tremendous losses. Some time during all of that, the Japanese military take Angelus' corpse and experiment on it, which eventually leads to the creation of Project Gestalt - a potential solution to the "White Chloronation Syndrome". Project Gestalt essentially separates people's souls from their bodies, and their bodies are now called "Replicants", while the souls are called "Gestalts" - those are the SHADES you fight against in the game. The floating books - Grimoires Weiss, Noir, Rubrum, etc. are former humans/child soldiers who fought the "red eye" army, and were proven to be compatible for Project Gestalt. There were many copies of them made - to eventually be used on the entirety of Humanity - and their role was to act as a trigger to combine ALL of the Gestalts and Replicants around the world into Humans once again after the White Chloronation Syndrome gets completely removed from planet Earth - after a certain amount of time has passed. The problem is - a Gestalt is unstable once it gets removed from its body, and after a certain amount of time loses their mind - which the scientists of Project Gestalt found out the hard way. So the Grimoires were supposed to also act as a stabilizer for the Gestalts, but weren't enough. After the intro to NieR happens, the protagonist of the game and his sister Yonah get rescued by the military, and he agrees to become the "Shadowlord" - basically, the ONLY Gestalt who won't lose his mind, and to act as a global stabilizer for every Gestalt on the planet - but only if the scientists find a cure for Yonah...eventually - since she got the White Chloronation Syndrome in the intro of the game, but has been resisting it ever since. Eventually, androids are created to recreate Replicants (since they can't reproduce anymore) so the Gestalts can have a body to come back to after Project Gestalt finishes. 1000+ years later, White Chloronation Syndrome is COMPLETELY gone, but Replicants have now gained SENTIENCE. This is a problem, since that means NEW souls have been created...somehow...within the Replicant bodies, but the old souls still exist out there somewhere - and are starting to wake up from their 1000+ year slumber BECAUSE of this random quirk the Replicants now seem to have. So the question is, what now? What are the androids, who were designed to oversee Project Gestalt, the Shadowlord, the Replicants and their Gestalts, and make sure the project finishes smoothly, supposed to do now? Well, the android models Devola and Popola, which were assigned to watch over the Replicants of the Shadowlord and his sister, as well as the Shadowlord himself, and some other Replicants and Gestalts in the area, and to initiate the end of Project Gestalt once the time is right, decide that it is a good idea to let the Replicants have their free will, not do anything about the Gestalts that have lost their minds and become mindless Shades, and just...wait and see what happens. Essentially. Meanwhile, Shadowlord has lost his patience after 1000+ years of waiting, and decides to just...kidnap Replicant Yonah, and try to force the merger of Gestalt Yonah and Replicant Yonah, so Gestalt Yonah doesn't lose her mind and die, and Replicant Yonah gets cured of the "disease" that she is shown to have in the game, which is actually her REPLICANT starting to die because her GESTALT is also starting to die. ONLY WHEN Nier, Kaine, and Emil are close to getting to the Shadowlord to save Yonah do Devola and Popola try to stop them. They fail. Nier kills the Shadowlord, his Gestalt. Following that, every Gestalt ON THE PLANET starts to rappidly lose their minds, and eventually die. Humanity has finally gone extinct. Project Gestalt has failed. Emil is TECHNICALLY the last true human left on the planet, after all of the Replicants die out as well. Since he can't die. The androids are now all that is left on the planet. Besides Emil, I guess. A lot of things happen after Nier and Nier: Automata. Like...ACTUAL ALIENS invading Earth, and the androids fighting them off. And failing. Aliens create machines to take over Earth, but EMIL to be the strongest being left to stand in their way, as he clones himself a ridiculous number of times to fight the entire machine army BY HIMSELF (since he was created to be the Ultimate Weapon of humanity). A robot that you fight in Nier as a boss, who only ever wanted to go into the outside world to explore it, manages to finally do that just as the war between the Alien Machine Army and the Emil clones is heating up. Saddened by this, he decides to SOMEHOW GIVE THE ALIEN-MADE MACHINES SENTIENCE. The machines, with their newfound free-will, immediately turn on their Alien creators and exterminate them. War over. For a couple hundred years, nothing happens. Androids lose their purpose, since they were created to PROTECT humanity (but failed), so eventually, some of them get a bright idea to create a lie that there are still humans hiding out on the moon due to the war against the machines, and that the androids need to keep fighting the machines to take back Planet Earth. For the Glory of Mankind. The moon actually has a giant server that houses an android made "council of humanity" AI that is tasked to perpetuate the lie...forever. So basically, the androids are fighting machines, who don't want to fight the androids anymore - but just to survive on Earth, in a never-ending war, for a Humanity that the androids don't even know doesn't even exist anymore. And once those that shouldn't know the truth start to find out, they get exterminated, and eventually the process begins anew with a new batch of newly created androids.
