What did YOU think about this movie?
I really love this movie but I'm not a fan of the ending it really ruined the movie for me cause I loved Tom and summer togather now look I don't have a problem with summer getting married to another guy but tom is the main character so to see his relation with summer and spend time with them only for Tom to end up with a woman that appeared for like 5 seconds of the movie just didn't do it for me and it really made me feel like I wasted my time watching the movie I would've ratherd the movie end with tom still being in love with summer even though she is married but yeh I think the movie should've had a sad ending for Tom with him not being able to move on and still having feelings for summer and thinking about her but at the same time accepting the fact that she is with another guy and that she is happy without him, that's how it should've ended if you ask me
Didn't like it at first felt it was a hair childish whimsical and corny and summer felt like a teenage girl with how many manipulative games she played until the final scene which tied the film together for me and fixed the film's biggest flaw aka the idea of 1 true love and that feeling with 1 person being unique as if most people don't date usually 7 people in their life and have sex with 5 on average... now I love it on rewatches and I only watch it to get to the final scene which shows me this wasn't written by an idiot or a studio executive with more savy added that final scene...one or the other....cause it showed that there's always another fish in the sea which is the most basic rule about love media should teach men and as long as we don't fall for the base idea of love being rare and look for it and don't feel defeated we can find a real woman....we should never think of ourselves as a unique Disney princess....little miss sunshine taught me to have sex with a lot of women not just 1....its true...let's leave it at that
The narrator intermittently chiming in actually annoyed me. Other than that, so many gems that made it super clever/creative. Also open to interpretation between the two archetypes. Ending could have been better IMHO.
Now, it is nostalgic.
I love this movie. That scene when all the guys are talking about their dream girl and Tom's friend says "Robin is better than the girl of my dreams. She's real." I think that highlights Tom's problem and naïveté. One movie that I think is amazing at deconstructing a romantic relationship is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's one of my favorite movies ever.
Rule of thumb Never date someone named after a flower car or time of season...their probably messed up...who names their child summer lol
@@razkable ? But summer wasn’t messed up she just didn’t like him wtf 😂
There's also a movie called "Ruby Sparks" that goes all in on that theme.
@@eliana8834Who has shower sex with someone they dont like?
You touched on something that I was thinking by the end: even though it didn't work out between the two of them, each one taught the other something that helped them in later relationships. It's kind of a beautiful thing that everyone we meet leaves a mark on us, whether or not it's for the better.
Also, the expectations vs reality scene is one of the best-executed scenes in modern cinema. We've all been there, and they managed it to commit it to the screen perfectly.
I remember watching this when it came out and being so depressed afterwards. After seeing it again now, it feels like a different movie and I appreciate it in a different way. Having those life experiences made a huge impact.
I saw this movie when I was 19 and I was coming off a casual relationship that ended somewhat badly and I remember the empathy I felt for both characters. It also helps to watch when youre feeling gloomy about single life and knowing that your past relationships don't define you. This movie has just the right amount of whimsy and moroseness and really generates an emotional reaction, at least IMO.
You could cook a meal for them and eat it yourself if you're still hung up

Very neat thing they did with color theory:
Throughout the movie, Summer is the only one wearing the color blue. That's why everyone in the You Make My Dreams Come True is wearing it.
You should absolutely do a commentary on Crazy Stupid Love. Although I think I like the commentaries for things you've never seen more. But that movie is too great to pass up.
My favorite!
I can see why some people are labelling her as a manic pixie dream girl but I think this movie is for those that have that fantasy of a mpdg. She has her own issues and him relying on her for his own happiness only led to his own heartbreak.
Edited to add:
What I mean by relying on her - He doesn't tell her that he likes her, he doesn't tell her that he wants to be a couple. He kinda hopes that Summer tells him that she loves him and that she wants to be a couple and he kinda gets pissed about it. It might have caused Summer to double down on her own insecurities of being in a commited relationship.
And you see this reflected in his life in a way. He doesn't pursue the things that he wants but lashes out and gers depressed when he doesn't get it. Which is kinda toxic IMHO
Replying to this so I have it saved somewhere
This is perfect
The Expectations and Reality scene is the most relatable scene I’ve ever seen in a movie. It was like a spotlight pointed at me, I had never felt so seen.
I just said seen/scene way too many times.
Even just seeing Tom stand by himself drinking a beer, man I been in too many situations like that 😂
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Just the simple idea of everyone thinking they are the hero of the story but that’s not always the case.
She's was on her purpose and started to believe in love and found her man. Tom believed in love but wasn't chasing his purpose then found his purpose and love. Amazing love story that's not a Love story.
Even though I finished this part of my life having this kind of relationship "being Tom of course", this film still makes me cry. Like, always being just from Tom's perspective and never truly understanding what the other person truly felt.
I once read a book where a character was warned that if he was willing to throw a punch at someone else that easily, it wouldn't take much for him to turn it back around on you.
The first time I saw this was when I was 24, I was on Tom's side. When I was 32, I understood Summer's actions. Now I'm 39 and I understand both sides. And I finally understand the meaning of 'This is not a love story, this is a story about love'
I went to see this with who I thought was just a friend when I was 16. It turned out to be our first date cuz apparently she went and begged all our friends to not be available that day. I still remember her gushing about what a sad love story this was and me thinking 'this isn't gonna end well' since like Summer I never really believed in love for myself at least. Like most high school relationships, it didn't last, but I hope she thinks of me as fond memories like i do with her.
I love this movie so much! It is so painful and so well written and so clever.
i've been in both sides, i've been both summer and tom and acted as bad as both of them
except that i actually broke up with my ex when i saw that she was falling and i wasn't
and i'm pretty sure this movie was one of the reasons i took the responsible route in that case
emotional maturity comes in two sides, your emotions and other people's
i think it's easier for me when it's about what other people feel
what do you think guys?
surprisingly, I've been with women (it's just 2) who are not into commitment and would rather be in a FWB than a romantic one. It still breaks my heart as i wanna be in a romantic relationship but i understand that they just got out in a relationship so it's a tricky situation.
Right now, I'm not in a relationship but I'm hoping to be in a Romantic long term one
I remember being so impressed with this movie the way you do, watching this as a teenager, thinking 'man, what da hek is this movie's about?' Then rewatch while being on a serious relationship, actually seeing and able to relate to 1 side... Then years later, watching again after fallen out of said relationship, (with almost the same story as the movie itself,) finally seeing and understanding each MC's point of view. It's been a journey and a half...
Fortunately, many others around me has worse drama in their life, that I had to be the one strong enough to support them, rather than crushing myself with my problems... So it's not as bad as it seemed to be
Heyy fun fact about dreams! flying dreams: dreams in which you are flying are very rare! only people who are happy and joyful can experience these dreams.
i’ve never experienced these dreams LoL
I definitely had casual relationships that worked out and were just finished on common terms.
The music and smiths part is sooo real.
Fun fact this was the movie that make Sony studios choose Mark webb for the amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Fun fact 2 before directing Spiderman this was His director debut
I've been in this type of relationship a few times with girls who send out mixed singles, don't communicate clearly and make me feel like I've done something wrong and then go out with another guy while thinking they can stay friends with me.
Of course it dosent help that I'm an introvert and the only girls i meet are the ones I also work with so I've only ever had work colleague relationships.
im 30, watching this film when i was 18. Still my favourite film.
"Honestly, a guy who's in love really will overthink and over-analyze", YES!
Me: I hate winter! Brrrrrrrr 🥶
*Nice to meet you, I'm Spring!*
Me: 😶😐😵🤯😍
She's better than the girl of my dreams she's real. I met that girl it was heavenly.
Yes! You should watch Crazy, Stupid, Love! One of my favorite movies! The chaos is just right! haha
We clearly don't have the same flying dreams, mines are terrifying because I move progressively faster until my skin starts ripping apart from my body and my bones start cracking and I'm just a puddle of blood moving at the speed of light.
Reminder: She's dating 1 of the Property Brothers now.
Please react to "Extraordinary Attorney Woo" It's so amazing, and I you might like it.
@@potterstrangerfan880 this isn’t a spoiler hahaha
I remember when I first saw this movie. It was actually I guess my first date with someone who would end up being my girlfriend but I thought she was totally not into me. She had joined my high school rock band as the drummer and she had a VERY Zoe Deschanel sorta vibe..you know hipster, maxi dresses, 60s mod hair and all that artsy aesthetics in general. In any case, we go to a friend of her's place and end up watching this movie. I legit thought it was her way of telling me that she WASN'T into me haha because there I was, a carbon copy of the male character, being all melancholy and listening to the Smiths all the time and there she was just like the other character. Needless to say, no, she was CRAZAAAAAY about me but sometimes when you're young like that you just don't know any better. Obviously in the end we broke up after a year, but in any case, to any other melancholy high schoolers or maybe you're in college or wherever you are in life, please try not to read into what people do, if you're into someone, just FREAKIN ASK THEM OUT, don't wait for a message to fall from the sky. Sometimes it works out really well even if just for a little while.
This movie is SO GOOD! Especially coming from a guy's perspective! Well written, produced, and acted!
She tells him up front that she doesn’t want to be in a relationship and she’s not looking for love and HE DECIDES TO NOT BELIEVE HER.
Also, I’m 42, been in a lot of relationships, and never been in love. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Are you married
weird question? how can you be in Relationships but not be in love with that person?
@@dyltack5349 I’d like to know how to be in a relationship and be in love with that person. Seems weird.
It was so great to hear a bit of your new single at the beginning of the video 👍🏻
Honestly the small story about you getting your haircut on a mission trip, was my favorite part lol
this is heaven i stay here now
Underrated documentary, way too real
Never seen this movie but I recognised the narrator’s voice instantly, its Richard Mcgonagle who voices Sully in the Uncharted games.
He is schmitten. . .just because she loves The Schmiths
I had to console my friend, after this movie. We made it to the parking lot, and she just started crying. We were both in states of heartache, at the time (perfect for watching this, in my opinion)--but, while I was wistful at how the movie reflected my then-current melancholy, it had pushed her past the point of feeling okay about hers.
Also, I just checked, and the narrator is Sully from the Uncharted games. I knew I recognized it!
People would be surprised to see the actual hill they were sitting on. A small park space that is locked up to all to keep transients from sleeping there.
After years now I realize this movie was made to make her look like the "villain" on porpouse, you only know she wasn't being mean in the breakup after watching half the movie
Fun fact: the woman with glasses who makes cards with her cats on them is the voice actress for the English dub of Naruto!
Yesss someone who is good at reactions watched this 😂
I still love this movie even though certain things regarding Tom's character and Summer's character haven't aged as well but the one thing that has never diminished from me is how it portrays Los Angeles. I love the way it never show the stereotypical LA scenes which is usually the beach and palm trees. Instead, we get to see downtown and a lot of the beautiful architecture that is still there but overshadowed by the ugliness of the street level in some of those areas. I got to do a walking tour of downtown that follows a lot of the spots featured in this movie and even found Tom's bench, which is no longer accessible as the park it was in is closed to the public.
I love The Smiths!!
How can I relate with Joseph and Zooey at the same time! Thanks for sharing
My all time favorite movie!
Oh my god. I had the same reactions while watching this movie. I think Angelina would be such a great movie partner 😂😂
Hey Angelina, if I could make a suggestion for a reaction video, you should watch Inside Man from 2006. It's a Spike Lee film about a New York City bank robbery staring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster, Christopher Plummer, Willem Dafoe, & Chiwetel Ejiofor.
My dad absolutely loves this movie. Especially the soundtrack.
JGL still gets Tom sympathizers coming up to him to this day.
And good guy that he is, makes it a point to tell them that Tom's actions are supposed to be taken as creepy and that the whole point of the movie is to show that Tom really didn't care about Summer at all.
Summer still lead him on knowing his views on love. She initiated all of the “romantic” moments such as kissing in the copy room, telling him things she hadn’t told anyone else, etc. Tom wasn’t exactly a good guy but lets not pretend Summer was completely innocent.
This is late… but definitely do crazy stupid love. One of my favorite rom coms
Hi Angelina! Loving your videos! If you're looking for any recommendations, you should definitely check out 50/50. It's another Joseph Gordon-Levitt movie that is definitely worth the watch!
I watched this for the first time with a girl I ended up breaking up with... which tells you how old I am haha, but watching it again after so long you get a better understanding of it, like you said. The film making and feel of the movie really influenced me though in my formative early 20's, and it honestly holds up! A really beautifully made film.
i lost my converse at pizza hut
When I started seeing a girl some years ago I told her I prefer free relationships (relationships without exclusivities) and she said she wouldn't feel good with that, but since things were going well and sweet between us I accepted a common closed relationship. But ever since I met her she was always talking about a guy who was super nice and she thought he was cute, so a few weeks after we get "serious" she asked me if we could make the way I proposed in the beginning because she found herself in love with both of us at the same time. I obviously accepted and it was super cool.
I get so much more with every pass with this movie.
1. Notice how bland Summer's character was? The story is the unreliable narrator trope. It tells it from Tom's skewed perspective.
2. Tom was not in love with Summer. He loved the way she made him feel when she made him feel good and he hated the way she made him feel when she made him feel bad. He didn't love her essence.
3. Tom was self centered. He didn't get cues when Summer was in tears or even seem to care what she was feeling or saying. Not to diss on his character. I love Tom. He's flawed and had to learn a hard lesson.
4. A vital development in the middle of the movie was after the bar fight and Tom lays it all out how he feels. Summer could have let him go but she came to him and wanted to give it another try and open up. She seemed to consider being in a relationship with Tom.
5. There was a character arc with Summer, she became a romantic.
6. Last of all, notice the colors. Summer wore blue and Tom wore neutral fall colors. Autumn also wore Tom's brown color palette. That gave me hope in their future relationship.
I'm sure there is more that I missed but it is such a beautiful film on so many levels.
Random recommendation but you should watch fear street. They are really good movies. Pretty scary but they are pretty underrated in my opinion
I love this movie so much, i watched first time whem i was in love with a girl in high school but she didn't liked me and we're friends. And whem i watched that movie, somehow it helped me to process, i put myself on Tom's shoes and understood how the felt and how he choosed to ignore the signs that his relationship and hopes would end badly. So i reawatched this movie a lot through the years. It was a trend on internet years ago about Summer is a "bitch" but i think this is misunderstood. 500 Days of Summer is truly a story about love. About Tom learned to be confident and honest about himself instead of flood on self-pitty and about Summer learned that love is actually possibe and life can have a meaning. I'd like to think that Tom and Summer became good friends and forever greatfull for their relationship to have happened. And i always rewatch 500 Days of Summer whem i need to think about my relationship with love and my choices.
What are the odds this review comes out when I'm going through heart break. I knew I was gonna get hurt still watched. I saw this movie as a teen and thought I'd forever believe in the idea of "the one" and that they would eventually show up, now the end of those 500 can't come soon enough. Yeah I'm hurt, but oh whale it is what it is now all I can do is yell POTATO
I love the movie but the biggest thing I caught was the voice of Naruto was in this movie without searching on google 😅 the old lady who was doing the presentation
Lovely intro

I can't watch this movie and not cry
And after I reached the end many years ago, I just don't watch this otherwise I'm crying the whole movie just like I did this reaction.
i often pair this anti-romance romance movie with eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
The writers of the movie said 75% of it was real on the DVD commentary
If you haven’t seen Definitely, Maybe I can’t recommend that enough!
My second favorite movie
one of my favorites
I haven't seen this movie in a long time. This made me fall in love of Zoey Deschannel
Victor "God Damn" Sullivan is narrating at the start.
This movie made me want to find love so bad (I'm also alone) that I had to immediately watch Melanie Hamlett, a die hard, man critic to get me back to my old cynicism again.
me too, she will always be Jess!
I’ve had dreams of flying quite frequently. Is that not normal?
Really good breakup movie that focuses on the guy
summer is chad only exclusive girl. no normies , no high tier normies , no chadlite
Girl I kid you not! Did you know it's a thing around the universe comment section of any romantic movie or tv series that when someone bashes the female love interest in any movie or tv series where the girlfriend is in the wrong, someone out of no where in the comment section would write f that character for example Bella from Twilight you'd see "f Bella and foc Summer too" lol girl I laugh every time I see someone say , foc Summer too, in any movie or tv series. That's so funny that no one forgets to bash Summer lol
Please watch STAR TREK. Give it a chance! 🖖
I’m an architect and math is a part of it but isn’t too hard. Design is a more valuable skill. Until I was 19 I would get infatuated from time to time, but after that I would only pursue women that I could tell had interest in me.

Are u ever going to post lucifer again????
I loved this movie back in high school, but rewatching it, this relationship was toxic. To an extent due to the lack of communication or at least not respecting what they both wanted from the relationship.

YOU HAVE TO WATCH FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM, CUZ U WATCHED HARRY POTTER
Great movie. Have you seen 50/50 with Joseph and Seth Rogan?
what does a potato have to do with sexual organs?
So Tom's next girlfriend will be named Winter?
This was a great movie. It was very original and funny. We can laugh as Joseph Gordon-Leavitt's character gets what he deserves. He fantasized about becoming an architect. He only had a shallow idea of that career. He projected all his career expectations on that profession. Architect was his idea of a profession, but he did not research the job market or the engineering mentality that is really needed to be an architect. Tom only wanted to be an architect because a lot of romantic movie men are architects. Tom quit a really good job because it was not his dream job.

you dont lead people on and break there heart she was bad at communicating that, what is this game they play then not call it love. that is messed up s you support her
could you watch Enola Holmes?
your intro was cringe
Afraid this one hasn't aged well as it kind of crystalized the definition of Manic Pixie Dream Girl in the character of Summer who never really gets any character development and it's all about the white liberal male gaze.
@M A Be less of a troll. Nothing pretentious about caring about good writing.
Afraid you missed the point of the movie (at least in my opinion). 500 Days of Summer is not a romance movie. It is about Gordon-Levitt's character and his perspective of the world. He sees her as a perfect girl. But the film shows that it is not the right thing to do, cause eventually this type of relationship is doomed.
You definitely can say it is about the gaze. But why is it specifically a white liberal male one?)
@@anvaryusupov8245 Because that's who his character is and we only get his point of view in the movie to such a degree that Summer is reduced to an object rather than a real person.
@@toshomni9478 Yes. But It is done on purpose. Cause it is not story about two people. And it is definetely not story about Summer. It is about one person's transformation.
Although Summer gets her own character arc as well. But her character arc is there to effect the protagonist.
She is there to expand on life view of main protagonist.
In fact all characters in movie are there to give new perspective to main protagonist. And eventually to influence him.
