awkward question, but are you going to covering your relation to sweet baby inc anytime soon? After that Kenzera Zau recommendation and with your good relationships with big companies, it feels like you are more and more leaning towards pleasing corpos and less about speaking openly to the community.
I've owned Elden Ring since it was released, I have only just now started playing it for the first time and I'm loving it. Can't wait to get the DLC too.
Never been a better time to start. Like Ralph said it's going to take awhile for you to get access to the dlc since Mohg has a recommended level of between 80-100. Just enjoy the ride though, I wish I could wipe my memory of my first playthrough so I could experience it for the first time again.
I bought it way after everyone else had already been playing it for quite some time. I out 150 hours in and never beat the game. That was over a year ago I last played and I recently started it again to catch up for the DLC. It has been a ton of fun.
Same, been waiting for them to drop a patch that finally supports ultrawide while still playing online. It’s time to just accept it for what it is, I guess. I just wanted to see the stunningly glorious beauty of Lordran in 32:9, but Miyazaki cares more about PvP balance…I guess.
Man, after 50 hours and 100% completion of the dlc, I am so satisfied. Like the base game, the dlc exceeded my expectations. That’s only something From Soft can do at this point. Now that the work on the Elden Ring content is completely over, I am so excited to see what Miyazaki and the company are working on next
The difficulty system is there because FromSoft have learned from previous expansions that some players want to enter with their end-game builds and just an equal amount of players will do it with relatively fresh characters. This is just a way for them to make sure you won't stomp on everything immediately and loose out on the experience.
Considering the approach to levelling in the DLC, I really wish it opened up much sooner, or was just a standalone experience. I am playing Elden Ring again on Steam Deck (having beaten it once on Xbox) and I'm about 40 hours in and I just don't think I can be bothered getting to Mohg again.
@@chrisp2588 no thanks, it's balanced around end game characters. also a playthrough with all remembrances can just be 20 hours. You can even get to mohg as soon as or before you kill radahn.
@@Sephirothkingdom782apparently yes, there's footage of player holding the boss weapon in the exact pose. I still would judge once I play the dlc myself though.
Wanting increased complexity for the Shadow Realm Blessing strikes me as missing the greater context of what they are, namely they're not only supposed to improve your stats, but also encourage exploration for power in the same way the base game does even for fully-built endgame characters. The kicker however is that the Shadow Realm Blessing only works within the Land of Shadow, and thus it can't be too complicated due to the fact that you do have to step back into the Lands Between. Imagine if the Land of Shadow introduced this whole new amazing ability to increase your carry weight or cast more spells like you said... and then imagine playing without those new amazing abilities when you go back to fight Maliketh or Radagon or Malenia, because those abilities don't carry over into the Lands Between. You'll basically be locking players into wanting to play ONLY the expansion areas because all of the interesting new abilities are in there. Imagine if you're playing Phantom Liberty, and you get all these snazzy Relic Abilities that allow you to shoot rockets at full auto or do amazing finishers, but then you can only use those abilities within Dogtown; it would SUCK massively to be locked out of such a unique set of abilities because you can only use them in one small area of the larger game, and I bet it'll fester resentment among the playerbase if they did that. In summary, the Shadow Realm Blessings being "boring" is exactly what it should be within the greater context of Shadow of the Erdtree being an *expansion* to Elden Ring, because at the end of the day it is still an area connected to the Lands Between, and players should maintain parity in terms of new abilities between realms, hence why you're able to carry all the new weapons, spells, and items you find in the Shadow Realm to the Lands Between.
Well put I thought he was off the mark as well with how the new system is meant to only fix balancing issues not change the combat up. I enjoy Skill Up’s nuanced reviews but I dislike any ideas for innovation he proposes in this.
Sorry Chillup... I very very RARELY skip these reviews with minor spoilers, but the magic of finding a new area playing these game are always indescribable. The exploration on FromSoft games is 50% de fun for me, so I will let a like already. Because you're a cool dude. I'm taking a 10 days vacation just for this DLC.Just pure bliss over here. Good gaming everyone! :)
I bought Elden Ring back in March as my first FromSoftware game. I accidently bought it at full price as I thought there was still a discount (pay attention to your purchases!) but I'm happy for that mistake. This has easily become one of my if not my favorite games that I have played. The sheer size and scale of the world pairing it with the deep the mythos has given me a feeling no other game may ever even encapsulate. I see this DLC as a friendly gesture of the middle finger to those that charge the same price for only a quarter of the content this has to offer, even if that quarter is great. Edit: I am departing off the pickle of Elden Ring and now I must try finger but hole.
Listening to this one - always appreciate how Shill writes his review for the curious but not wanting to have things be visually spoiled people like myself.
I remember when Miyazaki said you could mainline the main game in 40 hours lol. That seems impossible. I put in at least 150 hours into it before I beat it.
Even a "spoiler-free" review will have things I personally consider to be spoilers, but I look forward to watching this after I've played it. For now, I'm commenting and liking for the algo
You don’t often see development companies with so much consistency. I don’t think I can even name one besides From Soft that never misses. Capcom has been doing well lately though.

well get ready, because there are literally only 3 of each, martial arts only 2. Cause why add more of the new weapon types you marketed everywhere if you can just give every boss an old weapon type. Also one of the new weapon types has literally only 1 weapon.

Only FromSoft would hide the release of Elden Ring 2 in an expansion. The size of this "expansion" is mind-blowing. At least 50 hours, but looking like it's verging on 100 for a full playthorugh. I love FromSoft. Can't wait to see what the future holds.

The lands between in and of itself is a land of light which is why the erdtree glows and the scadutree is shadowy, plus they already confirmed this is the last dlc
This video is the eighth straight content creator review in a row for me. And by far the best. You said what you wanted and or needed to say without major spoilers. Which I very much appreciate since a lot of these people are proudly slapping “No spoilers” on their videos, when what they really mean is “We assume you are up-to-date on every reveal from every source *before* this review, where we will not be adding any new images or facts except for everything already revealed up to this point and part of the zeitgeist.” I decided to watch the main trailer and avoid everything else. It was hard but with my RUclips preferences and specific word exclusions, I made it months without anything besides the one thing I chose to watch (which was admittedly sparse and withholding as far as anything juicy besides the reveal of the Lion Dance boss) the main story trailer. So I was beyond miffed clicking on all of the reviews before your’s (or, more specifically, the first one which ruined months of diehard dedication and self-denying as far as intentionally remaining as in the dark as I could) in which “No Spoilers” was the lead-in only to have tons of weapons displayed, one major boss I had heard nothing about (although she’s way bada$$ in a Pontiff sort of style, so now more excited to fight her than mad I know she exists) shown in-battle and a more-or-less complete rundown of every one of the biomes, the part I was the most excited to discover on my own, to a of weapons and boss remembrance equipment on-display. Like trying to truly enter these From games as “blind” as possible becomes harder and harder with each new game (which, to be real, it feels like we’re all more-or-less treating this as). There are more and more rising lore analyzers and build-builders and really smart, clinical minds looking to connect every dot as they have come to appreciate this bond between themselves and the creators wherein small nuggets are mined for dozens of forms of speculative explanation and motivation breakdowns. This previously very small community of From/Miyazaki enthusiasts were always the same recognizable faces and names I would engage in gank gang wars with in the city and steps and towers of the old Anor Londo in DS3 legit five years after the game came out and they/we were helping to keep pvp alive, our one respite set against the impossibly far off wait for Elden Ring. And in most places I frequent I do still see these same people I have met online but don’t actually know, beyond our infectious love for keeping the game alive, however improbably long past its shelf-life. But crucially I also see so so so many more people. That small (well, relative to what) group of us that kept these games alive and active have been joined up by so many new From fans (even if the “purity” of our sanctity to our bond cannot be replicated or given to these newcomers). Stands to reason that out of this new crop of obsessive fans some of them would start and create content for their own channels and start producing lore and speculations. So yeah. Such a bummer getting exposed less than two days out from a truly naked gameplay so much information and set pieces and known locations where events will go down. So thanks again for being the only one so far to actually not have spoilers. Might want to pin my comment so people who have been screwed like I have out of the blind play they wanted or those who haven’t can know you are not guilty of these same egregious over-shares. Great job and thanks. Cheers ya’ll. Happy hunting in the lands of shadow.
1:38 " How do you make elden ring better". Let me say, I adore this game. I love so much about it and ive been looking forward to the dlc for months now. That said, when I was playing, especially because this is the first souls open world game from "from", I had a few things I would have liked to be improved; - Story; Dont get me wrong, I really like the mysterie and the ambigiouity of souls games in general. Trying to piece the puzzle together. Yet, in Elden Ring, because it is so expansive and non linear, I felt many side quests got kinda lost on me because npcs were so far apart and direction non intuitive. I would love to see a little more hints or clues where to go next (for particular storylines) if you would like to follow up on that sidequest. I think it would add to immersion even more so than I already was. As much as I like Vaativydia, I think it would be an improvement if I didnt need to rely so much on a youtube channel to understand so much of this worlds rich lore. - Button control; I think many people might not agree with me because they like a certain staleness I assume, but for example I would have really liked to see where you press " up " on the d-pad and then you can press a button to select specifically which skill you want to use instead of scrolling through skills until you find the right one. Ofcourse, you can equip less skills for particular builds, but I do think being able to select a skill more directly would widen build variety and smoothness overall. - Lastly; Being able to properly coop with a friend. I honestly never understood why fromsoft actively obscure people to do so. Not being able to mount, limited potions, no progession sharing, no fast travel etc. Ive played from DS3, Demon Souls, Bloodbourne, Sekiro and I did understand it for those. Elden Ring seemed like the perfect chance to add 2 player coop. What are your thoughts?
I think the spell scrolling is a balancing issue. It's not supposed to be easy to quickly switch between spells in intense combat encounters to stop you from getting too powerful. It's the same reason why you can't freely switch between weapons during combat without taking a weight penalty, it's supposed to be a bit of a pain.
11:40 Bro says "don't worry I won't spoil any L2 attacks". Literally less than a minute later he spoils the new katana L2 attack lmao. I don't even care about this kind of stuff and I still noticed.
I never really got the criticisms about the base game being too long. I mean, it was pretty much left down to the player to decide how long they wanted it to be & you could finish it fairly quickly if that was all you wanted. I on the other hand, did everything on my first playthrough, coz I wanted to experience everything From intended & you only get one first impression. I'm gonna do exactly the same with the expansion & I can't wait. Let's effing go!
I actually want to acknowledge that I only had $40 in my PS account from bday money and such, and I just don’t have the funds to be buying games rn, so FromSoft fairly priced a HUGE expansion and didn’t add micro transactions and I can actually afford to play it because I saved up. In contrast, I’ve been a Destiny player for 10 years, and the final expansion in that saga released too. It was $50, it’s stuffed with micro transactions, none of my friends play it anymore, and most of the content that is truly unique is locked behind struggling to find between one and 11 other players that you don’t know to complete the content. So I made the decision to forego a game I invested 10 years into for a game that was brand new to me 2 years ago, because Elden Ring really is that special, and importantly, it was and is more accessible to me personally. Which is ironic considering its infamous difficulty lol. All I’m saying is there aren’t a lot of games or developers like FromSoft out there right now and I appreciate them.
Aftermomths after months of rumination, my belief is that with this DLC, their main goal was weapon innovation. Even beyond the new classes, the weapons are more unique, like unique guard counters with special effects, a chargable skill that does more than increase damage and size of particle effect, the smithscript series, Homing Bow and Ballista, Unique Heavy Thrusting Sword Moveset, a staff that can cast both Sorceries and Incantations. Not to mention the beauty of the Light Greatsword Movesets. They also made Armour choice more than ooh, big poise. Most armour sets have some cool effect.
I wish they would have added a way to jump straight to the DLC from the start menu with a new character boosted to the appropriate level instead of needing to grind the whole game until endgame before entering. Much like The Witcher 3 did
If you know what you're doing, you can beat Mohg and Radahn and be at a reasonable level in 3 or 4 hours, you don't need to grind the whole game. They even give you a teleport right to Mohg's doorstep. And if you have an old file, you should have already done it. If you're new to the game you're not ready for the DLC anyway.
Sounds like this will be worth the money. Loving the new weapon options and looking forward to trying out the ones i can get my hands on but little disappointed that the expansion will follow the main game in recycling enemies.. hopefully it won't be as glaring as later areas of the base game but we shall see. Few more days, then we can all go see for ourselves what awaits us at the Shadow of the Erdtree! 😁
Elden Ring at launch was and is an incredible game. By the time I was done with it I felt ready to hang up my Soulslike hat, for what else could meaningfully be done after delivering possibly the all-around magnum opus of soulslike. Then, I played Lies of P, and realized that the genre could still offer so much even with only a little reimagining of mostly pre-existing ideas. Both of those experiences led me to have high expectations for SotE. Expectations which the DLC fell short of. The DLC did not meaningfully expand on what base Elden Ring offered, and often it stepped backwards on aspects that were previously great. Shallow exploration, poor execution of verticality, confusing map design in general (seriously I was happy to at least find a catacombs, compare that to base game), poor difficulty scaling, and in general a lack of finesse regarding what makes a From Soft bosses both good and challenging. It failed to iterate on the soulslike genre, other than setting a new bar for "hardest soulslike game," and while that may fit the reputation of the genre, that is not the point. Bosses are no longer elegant dances inviting you to learn the steps; they are demanding DDR runs, with a changing rhythm and insane tempo. They do not allow for meaningful self-expression through diverse builds, and in general just aren't fun. For some, this is what they wanted. Something soul crushing, a way to chase the memories of previous From Software games. For me, I wanted something that asked what more can be done that is novel and interesting? Not just "How do we one up Sister Freide, and Orphan of Kos, and Malenia, and Radahn, and maybe do it all in the same fight?" TL:DR; I wanted novelty a new challenge, not just: Combos that make Dancer of Boreal Valley combos seem short. An attack tempo that sometimes seems like it's from Sekiro. Delayed hits that make Morgott seem predictable. Damage that make pre-nerf Radahn look as weak. And layered magic/AOE spam that makes Gael seem boring.
Just a bit of a feedback. For me, saying the number of Major bosses/ number of new areas in the game are things I consider as spoilers. I love your videos btw, my go to RUclipsr for everything gaming and reviews.
Truth is, we don’t know. It’s definitely not going to play like that according to reviewers, so ithe real question is: is it Real but an extremely early version? Or is it not real at all? Either way, it will have an almost completely different move set and level of difficulty than that video. Some ppl are saying the final boss is either as hard or harder than melenia
I thought the base game map was amazing, but the Realm of Shadow is the perfect condensing of a souls open world where the flow from zone to zone is even better and more interesting with locations layered on top of each other reminiscent of DS1. And I would say the Shadow Keep is the best legacy dungeon in the game. Its more puzzle-y than any of the others else like a mix of the Research Hall from Bloodborne and the Grand Archives from DS3 with even a New Londo-style flooded lower level you can uncover.
20:30 - I already have a dagger build, a Ravenmount assassin cosplay, and a samurai build. The new weapons alone are making my altitis flare up! More alts with 100+ hours played each! 🤤
8:08 It took me with 1 character, doing everything more than 200 hrs. Highly agree with that criticism. Most dungeons or sidestuff rewards are re-use bosses, small rune rewards for defeating said bosses, and/or weapons/spells/etc. that you dont use for your builds. This is what made me not do multiple runs with different builds like I do with their other games and just not buy this dlc. Im sure the DLC is going to be great, I just feel that I had my fill.

This looks amazing and I'm sure it is I just can't get into souls games but I'm super happy for you all that do like them obviously this is another fantastic win for from and for you all enjoy🤘🤘🤘
One thing I need to give a big compliment to From Software is the performance of Elden Ring in general. I play it on a Mini-PC without a dedicated GPU (AMD Ryzen 7, Radeon 780M) and it runs at 1440p and maximum settings at 40-60 fps...
Glad to hear the areas are tighter. I wasn’t keen on the open areas in the base game. Yep I was one of those people you mentioned 🤭 I’ll be buying it day 1 in this case then. Thanks for the review!
Spent so much time playing this multiple times on both the PS5 and PC, but this review makes me feel like I forgot everything besides knowing I enjoyed it all. Hopefully it's not too hard to get back into.
It's a bit cringe how many times in this review you repeat "It's not a criticism" after what you just spelled out clearly IS a criticism. It's fine to have some criticism for a game that is otherwise clearly going to be highly praised. RUclipsrs just feel too scared of fanbases.
yea it was really annoying, and he greatly undersells how bad some of these "thought experiments" ugh...are... like holy fuck that blessing system is trash, the bosses are all just recycled/retreads, and the map is massive...and empty now! as apposed to uh...massive and filled with shitty dungeons, what a improvement. I feel like the reviewers are grossly overselling the dlc.
@@zomgpie2 For real, every time i see people criticizing any fromsoft's games, they always feel the need to say atleast 1 obligatory positive comment about the game despite it not being relevant to the discussion, i know they do that because they know how biased fromsoft fans can be.
In the recent weekly news video he mentioned he played the DLC on the plane to LA and I assume either wrote the review while on the plane or while juggling SGF commitments during the busy week. I don’t really think he was in a working environment conducive to creating a review for a massive open world DLC and it really shows in the video. I wonder why he didn’t just give the review to Austin? I get the feeling Skillup keeps the hype games to himself and leaves the rest to Austin. It was telling when he wished he reviewed Helldivers but gave it to Austin because it was surprise how much hype the game was post launch.
With the scadutree fragments, they only effect your stats in the DLC. I feel like that works because then people who don't have the DLC won't be missing out on an a new game changer for weapons and build if they changed your weapon attributes. Whrn it comes to pvp, those who have the dlc would probably be at an advantage
@@davidm2031 I can see why you’d say that, but I’ve watched dozens of similarly timed, spoiler free reviews that don’t tell you how many bosses are in the game.
While this DLC isn’t gamechanging or anything, if you want more Elden Ring then it has some of the most unique and beautiful areas along with some of the most thrilling boss fights in the game. Sure, the difficulty might feel a bit bonkers, but as long as you collect the necessary upgrades and…well, git gud, then it’s nothing you can’t handle if you managed to beat the base game. It’s surprising to me how many players didn’t beat Mohg though, AKA one of the required bosses for the DLC. Then again, I did make sure to fight every optional boss in the base game, and did the same in the DLC through all my wonderful 40 hours of playtime.👌🏽

The difficulty system is there because FromSoft have learned from previous expansions that some players want to enter with their end-game builds and just an equal amount of players will do it with relatively fresh characters. This is just a way for them to make sure you won't stomp on everything immediately and loose out on the experience.

This without talking about how broken it would be for PvP and could make twinks much worse than what they are.
I wish leveling up in the base game worked like this, or like Sekiro
Sorry Chillup... I very very RARELY skip these reviews with minor spoilers, but the magic of finding a new area playing these game are always indescribable.

Good gaming everyone! :)
Just flip your phone over and listen
I just love to hear them suck off fromsoft😂
I just came back to this review now after beating the DLC.

Yea from DLCS are notoriously usually really expensive but still super goof.

Being a AC vet (all the way from Armored Core on PS) FromSoft NEVER misses!

Holy Cheesus the new weapons are siiiiiick! The light greatsword, heavy katana, and martial art class makes my buildcrafting juices all fizzy.
well get ready, because there are literally only 3 of each, martial arts only 2. Cause why add more of the new weapon types you marketed everywhere if you can just give every boss an old weapon type. Also one of the new weapon types has literally only 1 weapon.
Can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeve!

The reason I love this game so, so much is how utterly unique and different everybody's playthrough can be...when you said you didn't find any backhand swords it literally made me double take because the very first weapon I found, like literally within 15 mins of starting the dlc, was in fact backhand swords...incredible
Only FromSoft would hide the release of Elden Ring 2 in an expansion. The size of this "expansion" is mind-blowing. At least 50 hours, but looking like it's verging on 100 for a full playthorugh. I love FromSoft. Can't wait to see what the future holds.

Lower, middle, higher. This is Zelda Tears of the Kingdom but better and we are getting the different sections of the world in content drops. Next time we go up!

Which I very much appreciate since a lot of these people are proudly slapping “No spoilers” on their videos, when what they really mean is “We assume you are up-to-date on every reveal from every source *before* this review, where we will not be adding any new images or facts except for everything already revealed up to this point and part of the zeitgeist.”
I decided to watch the main trailer and avoid everything else.
1:38 " How do you make elden ring better". Let me say, I adore this game. I love so much about it and ive been looking forward to the dlc for months now. That said, when I was playing, especially because this is the first souls open world game from "from", I had a few things I would have liked to be improved;
- Story; Dont get me wrong, I really like the mysterie and the ambigiouity of souls games in general.
I would have never seen this coming, neeeeever.
12:20 love that Sekiro Ichimonji 😂😂😂
Lion! It's a dancing lion!
For real idk why he keeps referring it to a dragon. He did it in his preview as well.
Thanks for your work and greeting from germany :) i am now in Australia (Adelaide) for the time. Nice experience so far.❤
11:40 Bro says "don't worry I won't spoil any L2 attacks". Literally less than a minute later he spoils the new katana L2 attack lmao. I don't even care about this kind of stuff and I still noticed.
I have been around souls since DS1 when i was like 11 and its so so cool to see how big this community has became 😁
Listening to this like a podcast I want to be fully surprised
I never really got the criticisms about the base game being too long. I mean, it was pretty much left down to the player to decide how long they wanted it to be & you could finish it fairly quickly if that was all you wanted. I on the other hand, did everything on my first playthrough, coz I wanted to experience everything From intended & you only get one first impression. I'm gonna do exactly the same with the expansion & I can't wait. Let's effing go!
THE HYPE HAS NEVER BEEN SO INTENSE FOR THIS FRIDAY!!!!

@@vezolf4313 sucks to be you
I actually want to acknowledge that I only had $40 in my PS account from bday money and such, and I just don’t have the funds to be buying games rn, so FromSoft fairly priced a HUGE expansion and didn’t add micro transactions and I can actually afford to play it because I saved up. All I’m saying is there aren’t a lot of games or developers like FromSoft out there right now and I appreciate them.
mimic tear our savior
Bro one handing the two handers 😆😆😆
I can’t keep waiting. This needs to release PLEASE
We in here, almost time!!
Not just "How do we one up Sister Freide, and Orphan of Kos, and Malenia, and Radahn, and maybe do it all in the same fight?"
TL:DR; I wanted novelty a new challenge, not just: Combos that make Dancer of Boreal Valley combos seem short. An attack tempo that sometimes seems like it's from Sekiro. Delayed hits that make Morgott seem predictable. Damage that make pre-nerf Radahn look as weak. And layered magic/AOE spam that makes Gael seem boring.
Spot on
Just a bit of a feedback. For me, saying the number of Major bosses/ number of new areas in the game are things I consider as spoilers.
I love your videos btw, my go to RUclipsr for everything gaming and reviews.
I just wanna know: is the leaked video yesterday about the final boss real or not after all?
Thx a lot for answering 🙏🙏🙏🙏👍
Truth is, we don’t know. It’s definitely not going to play like that according to reviewers, so ithe real question is: is it Real but an extremely early version? Or is it not real at all? Either way, it will have an almost completely different move set and level of difficulty than that video. Some ppl are saying the final boss is either as hard or harder than melenia
Exactly what I expected.
An absolute Masterpiece of a DLC.
From has been cooking in the Messmer Kitchen 🔥
My body is ready
I thought the base game map was amazing, but the Realm of Shadow is the perfect condensing of a souls open world where the flow from zone to zone is even better and more interesting with locations layered on top of each other reminiscent of DS1.
And I would say the Shadow Keep is the best legacy dungeon in the game. Its more puzzle-y than any of the others else like a mix of the Research Hall from Bloodborne and the Grand Archives from DS3 with even a New Londo-style flooded lower level you can uncover.
Brother, any Final Shape review? Curious to know your final thoughts. Much love from Qatar

Most dungeons or sidestuff rewards are re-use bosses, small rune rewards for defeating said bosses, and/or weapons/spells/etc. that you dont use for your builds.

It’s not spoiler free when you tell how many bosses there are in a first few seconds
If you think the number of bosses is a spoiler (it's not) then why are you watching a 30min review of the game? Maybe don't?
@@davidm2031 I can see why you’d say that, but I’ve watched dozens of similarly timed, spoiler free reviews that don’t tell you how many bosses are in the game.
The review I've been waiting for 🙏🏽
I'd really love if Ralph criticized a game for what it was and not what he wants it to be. He always seems to do this. It's an annoying review model
I've watched a few different videos about this dlc. Had to turn yours off after a couple mins cuz you were saying too much. Your definition of spoiler free should be reevaluated.
Maybe you should grow up.
