If an instructor set this scenario up in a training academy (scaffolding, narrow streets partially blocked by street restaurants, old multiple use building without standpipes), multiple exposure situations) they would call it out as being absurd. Great work by the members.

You can't underestimate how important experience is with these types of fires. Limited building access due to surrounding structures and and a clearly compromised roof in the fire building required them to think about how to attack the fire. Good video and job by FDNY.

I saw an earlier video of this fire: It was incomprhensible! Your video is fantastic; you did a great job John! I am a native New Yorker, and during my youth (late '50s early '60s), the "Village" (Bleeker& Thompson) was my "stomping" ground. Seemed to me that your early vantage point on the adjoining building offered the best view of the seriousness of this fire as heavy dark smoke was poring out of the roof. Too bad you are not linked to the command center! Thanks to you and all the FDNY members for their heroic work!

It's unbelievable to me how many civilians are just standing so close by the firefighters and the scenery - it seems that there are no barriers to keep all uninvolved people away??!! This would absolutely be impossible e. g. in Germany.

Just started watching your videos so I don't know your association with the fire dept but they do seem to be used to you wandering around. Your up close shots give a very visceral view of the situation.

Was there fire directly beneath the fire fighters on the roof of were they on an adjacent building?

Can you fly a drone in the city? You could hover it while on the ground filming.

Why are the businesses on either side still operating. In Australia all the businesses surrounding the area would be evacuated as soon as the fire was noticed and onlookers moved back to allow fire fighters to do their jobs without having people getting in their way.

Maji, I just thought about something. A few months ago I bought an infrared laser thermometer. I’ll put in some money for ya, the one I bought was for electricity, ac, and cars. But that may be a great tool for ya, in this fire. I’m sure a lot of others would chip in, because you could probably see it long before the dragon came through the roof! Let me know!
