Robot was great, but the real treat was seeing Forry Ackerman. He was a wonderful friend. I miss him tremendously, but he made it to 92 and had a full and fascinating life.
I, and millions of fans around the world (I'm sure), are grateful to William Malone and Fred Barton for restoring and maintaining this fabulous classic prop from movie history. Robby will live forever!
I am 49 years of age and the first time I watched, "Forbidden Planet," girls quit being gross to me and suddenly all of them were cured of the dreaded cooties virus.
Wow! Thanks for sharing. I've seen lots of Robby videos but never the actual robot, only replicas. What a great video, seeing the control panel and the insides. Fantastic!
A MILLIONTH THANKS TO YOU GUYS FOR THIS! I speak for myself and perhaps millions of other viewers that have seen ROBBIE in this premiere movie role, and other appearances as well (TWILIGHT ZONE, LOST IN SPACE etc). The inner workings of a 50s CELEBRITY robot FINALLY REVEALED]! Get TOBOR ready.... we're on our way!
I saw Forbidden Planet as a kid in a neighborhood theater with hundreds of other delinquents. I remember looking around and I saw that everybody else had the same look of wonder on their faces that I did. Hard to gauge how many sci-fi fans this movie created that year. I made a point of seeing every show that Robbie was in.
This was nice to see two of my favorite creations in the universe; Forrest Ackerman and Robby. I was lucky enough to meet Forry at convention in Montreal Canada in the early 90's. The convention a real fan run one (not a corporation) Had him as a guest of honour and in turn Forry had sent up some of his private collection of props and memorabilia. The magic moment for myself and my good lady was on the Monday morning after the end of the convention we went down to the lobby to check out and there was Forry patiently waiting for his cab to the airport. We sat and talked to him for a full thirty minutes before his cab arrived ( this is Montreal) He was very gracious and gentleman, a wonderful memory. Which Fan conventions where all about. Thank you Sir.
This is very cool! Thank you for posting this. I don't think Bill Malone will let cameras see inside Robby these days so this is a rare treat. I didn't realize he has owned Robby for so long. He looks much younger in this documentary.
I remember the first time I saw this video I nearly fell out of my seat , I couldn't believe that Bill Malone was showing us secret stuff about Robby !!! I Love this video !!! I only wish it was of a higher resolution. This came from a Famous Monsters videotape , obscure because the box only said Robby the Robot !
Classic.. thanks! Now we need to see the story about the man who built Robby, mechanical designer Robert Kinoshita, who was given the job after others had come up with the concept.
My nick name has always been Robby. I was a young child when I 1st watched Forbidden Planet and the 3rd listed was only 'The Robot'. When it was revelled that The Robot's name was Robby I connected to Robby straight away like he was a Robot version of me and his voice is amazing and I can't imagine any other voice for Robby. Forbidden Planet with Robby will always be my favourite film, also with the Monsters from the Id that wiped out the Krell 2,000 centuries ago. Is the Krell's advancement to a technology with no instrumentation computer a warning to us? Maybe, a friend of mine who is in the Air Force told me stuff that we are already on the way to no instrumentation control system. Despite our advancement, We are still human with monsters from the Id very much still there. A true story of everyday life from 4.500 years ago Egypt that was recently discovered and translated says to me we have not advanced at all with our emotions. That is why we have Laws today.
Robbie also appeared on a K-Tel record album cover. I have the record. It's a mix of rock and pop from the early 1970's. A good record made doubly so by Robbie on the cover!
I have seen the robot in everything he was in. Funny thought is I always felt the head and sounds resembled a old time slot machine. This is cool. I like this robot and the B9 from Lost in Space
@@passqualecaiazza7728 As a friend of mine once said , The robot probably cost so much to make for Forbidden Planet, that movie producers had to put him in everything in order to pay off the bill. P. S. I have a small wind up Robbie robot I once bought at a comic book store.
On the episode of Lost in Space with Robbie and the B9 robot if you listen they have the soundtrack to The Day the Earth Stood Still playing but no Gort
Robby of the Forbidden Planet appeared on episodes of The Twilight Zone and War Of The Robots on Lost In Space. I seen documentary footage of how they fit Bob May into the much bigger B9 suit of armor on Lost In Space. I've always wondered how they got an actor into that small torso and thin legged Robby suit. I'm not claustrophobic nor am I a stout guy but trying to fit into that Robby suit would kill me. Cool Posting !
He passed away many years ago sadly. This was filmed a long time ago. Bill Malone sold Robby a couple years ago along with the entire control panel, the transport vehicle Robby drove and an extra head used in a Twilight Zone episode.
How did they animate him while he was walking around? If he had a cord attached to him how could he go very far and why did you not see the cord in the movie?
I wish the Maschinenmen (Fake Maria robot) had been kept like Robby for posterity, instead of burning it in the set. It has proven virtually impossible to replicate the face of the original Metropolis robot, the subtleties of the facial design had been lost forever, the metallic paint work caused the facial structure to vary according to lighting conditions and the lack of a three dimensional model makes it very difficult to pinpoint the exact facial structure to make a 100% accurate copy.
For a number of years I got them confused, too, but they're entirely different. The B9 robot from LiS no longer exists in original form. Great that Robby's still around. May he outlast the Krell civilization!
That was very interesting I liked seeing the inside of bobby. I am the type of person that must know how everything works LOL thank you for sharing c];-D
That robot looks very similar to the one in Lost in Space. But it is different. I love Forbidden Planet! Ann Francis was way, way, before my time. But she still managed to put me through puberty with that micro mini space dress and her bare feet and legs. I am 49 years of age and still lust over Forbidden Planet's Ann Francis.
This is funny because Forry Ackerman didn't like Forbidden Planet and wrote a bad review of it for Science Fiction Times. He didn't like the film's failed attempts at humor (all of the scenes with the cook are silly) and many of the love scenes were embarrassing even at the time.
Robbie is the King of all robots! Thanks for this way-cool inside look at how it all works. Robbie will always be my favorite robot...that includes Donald Trump!
@@vksasdgaming9472 Actually was commenting on the Krell- O- Vision joke by the Dr Morbius lookalike. To be honest we could end up like the Krell's with the rate our technology is advancing. One of my older brothers was born the year this movie was made, 1956.
Love the LOST IN SPACE episode which centered on the two robots!!!And I've been a fan of FORBIDDEN PLANET ever since I first saw it!!!!!
Robby was actually on LIS twice. Once was a non speaking role, he acted as a kind of guard on a prison ship.
For young movie goers in 1957, Robby was the star of the show. For their dads, it was definitely Ann Francis!
lmao

Robbie❣️Forbidden Planet is still one of my favorite movies ever. Thank you for sharing the story behind or inside the robot.
What a great machine, interesting behind the scenes look at this!
This was great! From Forry J. Ackerman's video "Hooray for Horrorwood". Still have it on VHS.

Fantastic video
The effort to build Robby certainly paid off.
great video, I love robbie. I'm born the same year as the movie. thanks, awesome insight
Robbie does not look a day older. Stay off oxygen it causes rust! Immortal
Saw Robbie in an episode of Columbo...and of course...FP...always worried he might encounter Gort from The Day The World Stood Still....!!!
Fantastic!
Wow, that was great to see after all those years. I am thinking of building a small model of Robby, if you don't mind.
I thought that robot was the best thing since sliced bread, grew up in the 70s and it was fantastic
Just amazing

There was a version of the robot with a motorzed track base in a Columbo episode.

No wonder Robbie put alcohol in himself and it got to Frankie.
That was the best!
He did appear in an episode of "Lost In Space" as well (maybe two if it was a double episode)

With all the electronics, how on earth did the actor fit inside the robot?
Also how did he not get electrocuted, from the electronics?
Robby also appeared on a Mork and Mindy episode.
So cool!

He was in Lost in Space ...

I wonder when this was recorded.
He shouldn't have sold him. Bill subtly advertising in his own movie Creature in the background.
Cool.
