Appreciate your review, especially showing this operating in Raid 1 mode. With the tech we have out right now (aside from the new Thunderbolt 5), this might be as good as it gets for Raid 1, unless you get into allot more money. You could use two independent 40GPS drives in separate enclosures and enjoy full speed, but manually do a mirror back up. This model of enclosure gives you the convenience of Raid 1 but your backups will take longer. However, one enclosure, two drives and a little less work. In conclusion it’s not a bad set up overall. I have a UGreen model with a Samsung 980 Pro and get the speeds of read/write in the 3000 mbps range and am quite pleased with it. But I do wish there were more models available that did Raid 1, as having an application such as the model you have reviewed is significantly less expensive than units that are larger and preconfigured, which often cater to professional s. Thank you! Great review.
Brand new to the channel. Really good review, in-depth yet easy to understand. I would like to offer one piece of advice I think will help you get subscribers and that is to think of the camera as a buddy you're helping get up to speed on a piece of tech. The camera lens is your friend so look him in the eye once in awhile. It's ok to look away to check notes or whatever helps you get the data out. If you make a mistake just correct yourself right then and there and if it's something you catch later pop up text on the screen with the correction. Lots of YTbers do that. You can start, stop and start over and correct in post production but I don't mind seeing people make mistakes once in awhile. We're all human, at least until our Ai overlords take charge.
@@MikeFaucher I hope your channel gets one of those coveted silver YT plaques they give you when you pass certain milestones asap. So many of these channels lately are created by Ai and are little better than commercials using manufacturer's videos. I'm an old codger and have nothing better to do with my life nowadays than give my two cents on things. I got into a bit of an argument on Discord with someone posting that this expensive USB cable was somehow sonically better than less expensive ones. I call trying to pass off a cable that passes a digital stream in the same light as a cable sending an analog signal 'snake oil', although if someone has a solid enough argument I'm open to changing my mind.
Obviously there's something seriously wrong in your test set-up < No, it's the controller in the device limiting speed, see 05:50 > Write performance is abysmal You really should be getting better speeds from a (PCIe 4) Samsung 980 Pro I get 2200 MB/s write and 2700 read from an ancient single, slower 500GB Samsung 980 (which is PCIe 3) in a Satechi USB4 enclosure, even while it's being used as an external start-up disk on an M1 Mini...
I get over 3000 in all my units (see my other reviews) but this controller does not reach that speed. It is not the setup but the limitations of the device.
@@MikeFaucher I apparently missed your remark on the controller at 05:50 , so my above remark re: test set-up is indeed wrong 🤐 Unfortunately that makes the enclosure look even worse Anyone expecting the performance of their earlier 40Gbps SSD enclosure is going to be disappointed with this "Pro Max" Another reviewer thought is wasn't 40 Gbps to the drives, but more like 2x 20 Gbps - which would fit your single drive test results + additional overhead
@@Wannes_ Unfortunately, the device is not the fastest, and I am sure it is because of their choice of controllers and compromises in the design. Maybe the next version will be quicker. It is still a nice unit, but you are right; the performance is not up to par if you are used to the T3/USB4 performance. Thanks for the feedback.
I'm really surprised by the VERY LOW Speeds. If i compare it to my Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB placed in an older Anyono TB-casing i get MUCH higher speeds on my M1 MBA 16/256 In Blackmagic depending on the stress size 1-5 GB (5 GB seems to be the standard value) i get the following values Stress Level 5 GB Write 2445 MB/s Read 2768 MB/s Stress Level 1 GB Write 3666 MB/s Read 2798 MB/s Stress Level 2 GB Write 2804 MB/s Read 2755 MB/s Stress Level 3 GB Write 2586 MB/s Read 2759 MB/s Stress Level 4 GB Write 2502 MB/s Read 2757 MB/s So it seems that in the Acasis TBU405 ProMax every NVME Port just get half of the available bandwidth by default, does it have differnt values when only populated with one NVME drive, does the WD Blacks same values in diffrent TB-housings? The problem with striping is an extended danger of data loss, and only with striping the device delivers the performance much cheaper standard NVME housings deliver, of course there can't be a higher data transfer due to the limitations of TB/USB4, you have only 40 Gbps , for all (Video, Network, Data), and the amount of data bandwidth is limited by specification, you can use a NVME Gen 5 you won't get more, a high end Gen 3 almost deliver everything possible (app. 95%) but you get them dirt cheap now. like to see a review on the JEYI Dual M.2 NVMe Enclosure, Touch Control 20Gbps 2-Bay Hardware RAID SSD Case
