Oh man. That is a cool track. At the one minute mark those drums came in full assault. Very nice. Loved it. Hey thanks for the video Grant. I really appreciate it man. And thanks for the shout out too. Got my name right first time too. Haha. Looking forward to more of your videos. Keep up the great work in helping us out . Appreciate it.
Glad you liked the track dude - Happy to help out! Hopefully this will help you get your percussion sounding the way you want it to! Thanks for watching!
lol I came to this video a long time ago for some tips and just realized why your name seemed familiar... Arkival and Engine. Feels like a small world we work in.
Thank you so much, those GDYN hits come from Phil Lober's Trailer Music Fluency Course. I'm not entirely sure if that course is still offered or not trailer-music.teachable.com/p/mindset I see that he has this course offered, and it mentions that you get free custom samples along with the course, but I'm not sure if they'd be the same set of sounds or not. Hoping you can still get them, because they're very good hits
Hey man, I keep coming back to this video because your percussion just SLAPS!!! I'm so curious about that top layer perc, you said it's from KF Devastator, the Synthetic Trailer Drums RR...I have that library and I've gone through every single key in the patch and none sound quite like yours. Im curious if you pitched or eq'ed that track in any way? Would love any insight on that sample cause it does so much of the work in the top end. Thanks man!
I think every mix situation is going to be different, but I will say that I think the KF synthetic Trailer Drums RR Layer sounds pretty close to this right out of the box. Sometimes some saturation can go along way with sounds like this too -I'm a huge fan of Soundtoy's decapitator for all things, but especially drums. I will say that I still love that KF patch, but I've been finding that Ferrum has a lot of really nice patches too. Some of the higher register areas on the "Epic Trailer Drums" patch in there really go along way with crafting the top end to my percussion sounds. It is a tricky balance to get it to sit in there just right. I'd definitely be open to hopping on a zoom call or something with you and I can show you some more in depth things if you're curious. Let me know!
It’s so good! I love both damage 1 and 2’s Armageddon patches! Also, the plastics in damage 1 are phenomenal too! So glad you’ve been digging these videos man - trying to stay consistent with it! :)
Hahahah! The pain is real, I feel that - lol I always just throw ideas at the wall (or DAW), and spend time getting organized later, mostly when I'm prepping stems haha!
I have a question, epic percussion is the very reason my track is losing headroom. Do you guys ever put down pregain abit? Only on stero out master? Or abit on group master?
It sort of depends on the situation. Lots of times I'd do a lot of that on the stereo out/master bus since a lot of the publishers want -6db headroom (or so). I'm not entirely sure if that's the way everyone else does it or not, but I haven't had any complaints, and my masters turn out pretty good from the engineers afterwards! It kind of all depends on who has their hands on your track though, and how you try to balance it all. with trailers the drums are such a critical part of the sound that I try to keep them loud, and adjust the other instruments accordingly! Take it all with a grain of salt though, using music/mix references really help as well!
Anyone else thought from the title, that there is some unknown percussion heavy trailer (as in trailerparks) underground hiphop style your not aware of?

@@Grantborland Definitely!
Great video, Grant, your drums are so clean and powerful. Great tips for me, as they are one of my weaker points.

Great fact with the bicycle bell.
Thanks so much man, I was really happy with the results of that sound!

Haha that actually is very usable for german cooking shows! 😃
It’s so funny sometimes how the stuff gets used! What’s even more surprising is how well it actually works most of the time! 😂
Keep it up!
Trying! Shooting for weekly uploads - 17 weeks in a row and going strong! 🔥 😉
