I must say, this has got to be one of the most interesting development stories ever! I mean, how can so many terrible decisions be made by one group of executives and for one game?! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game have to be pretty much completely rebuilt post-launch. Truly something to be studied for ages to come…
It's a lesson on corporate gaming inevitably leading to shitty creatively bankrupt franchises. Nothing "new" to learn here. It has always been like this.
It's not the developer's (DICE) fault. I'm a developer (a software engineer, programmer, or a... developer... whatever). And we just build stuff. The actual brain of the company are the executives. They make the decisions, then they tell us to do this. And so we do it. I've had projects where I tell myself, holy fuck this is gonna be a disaster, why would the execs decide on this? Then I remember, those that control us developers, they have business degrees, not computer science/game design backgrounds... They always think of profit instead of making the actual games look and feel good. This is the truth behind big companies. It's always these dumb morons at the top who are so out of touch of the consumer's wants, because they are... So high in their heads, and in their position, that they can't see what's below. And so this is what happens when dumb corporates think of developers as 'just there to build' as if it was the modern equivalent of construction workers. And so they leave. We leave. Then the dumb corpos do a pikachu face, and gets surprised when they realize they're gonna spend time and money to hire new people, and spend even more time training them to use the tools that we previous devs have built. Fuck executives.
Final Fantasy 14 had to be basically rebuilt because it was so hated, but now it's one of the most popular MMORPGs on the market because they put in the time and effort to improve and listen to customer feedback. They literally had an in universe apocalypse and rebuilt the world. Now most the people into the game are borderline fanatical about it, and that's largely due to the fact the game actually tries to appeal to them. American devs could learn something from them, but they will not.
If a publisher ever says they’re adding extra development studios to a title, it’s not going well. As soon as I heard that more studio’s were helping I knew things were bad, and I was proven right.
I’m a contract worker. 100% is the issue here. See for small companies. Not at all. It’s easier to work around, they share files, share software and just want the job done! But these major corps. It becomes 90% paperwork and 10% work. So that 10% work you have to rush and push through stuff you don’t passionately love or even care about.
BF4 was terrible at launch as well, but at least the game's basic mechanics and foundations were solid so after a few patches and DLCs it went pretty well. But BF2042 however, was doomed from the start.
At the beginning? Fuck no, the game hardly functioned. Once the bugs got fixed? Yeah. It’s been a consistent thing for BF games to absolutely suck at launch, but that’s typically because of bugs and glitches, not gameplay flaws like 2042’s.
I was waiting for a video like this. Ever since Crowbcat died and Internet Historian stopped covering videogames I feel like fails such as these aren't being covered enough anymore.
I'm crying. I played BF1 and BFV as a teenager and loved them (even BFV with all its bugs and stupid design decisions). Now that I am a college dude, I wanted to see how my favorite videogame was doing. This is without any doubt a destiny worse than death.
Another example of how no matter how many resources you throw at it if you let your creative project be run by a corporate board motivated solely by profit they are going to manage to fuck it up.
If I had a nickel for every time a game with a future year in its title was massively hyped before release and then revealed to be one of the worst most undercooked games ever created, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice. Edit: make that 3 HOW could I forget the classic fallout 76
Lol it's a lot more than 2 or 3. In EA alone there are innumerous cases, BF2, the entire PvZ franchise after Garden Warfare, Andromeda, the Mass Effect remaster, couple of NFS', Crysis remaster, i think even dragon age inquisition had a bad reception when it was released and so on. Including other companies, there's a heck lot more. CP2077, F76, NMS, Space Hulk Deathwing, Spellbreak, Division 2, almost all Assassins Creed after Black Flag, GTA trilogy, Just Cause 4 and so on.
It's now June of 2023 and Battlefield 2042 just released their Season 5 update. Content includes a single map which is horribly balanced, has terrible visibility, and is a nightmare to play on. DICE butchered the way all of their weapons function, yet again, and promised to fix them in an upcoming update, yet again. They've destroyed their weapon functionality no less than 3 times in the lifespan of this game. After a year and a half of witnessing this game being developed live before our eyes, they continue to fail over and over again, and further burry the Battlefield franchise in its grave.
The devs doesn’t need to watch this, the one needed to watch this is the decision makers in EA and DICE, but would they care about anything else than money? Given enough resources, anything can be made, but if EA want to push it out right away, the devs can’t stop. I bet the date they released the beta was right after they fixed most of the bugs that could crash the server/game, and turned them into these de-sync and messed up graphics. Just barely enough time spent to make the thing runnable.
@Burstein von Knackerthrasher I don't think anyone's gonna be pre-ordering or even gonna care about another BF game. So yep, this may be the death of Battlefield
I came back to bf2042 after a year it launched, and while it’s not as buggy as it was when it first came out, it gets boring after a while since there’s only a small handful of maps the game has. Not to mention the game was trying to hop on the latest trends and making it more arcady instead of staying true to what made the series great in the first place. Rest easy battlefield, you were too good for this world.
The biggest thing that made me really hate 2042 wasn't even the bugs or whatever, but it was the way this game felt more like a CoD or Overwatch title. Tactical sprint, sliding, specialists, etc. It didn't feel like battlefield. It just felt like a hero shooter mixed with huge maps.
10:10 "If the world is so awful, why are the soldiers like this?" That pretty much is how things would be if this was Monster Hunter. The world is apocalyptic and filled to the brim with monsters... BUT IF WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE, BETTER HAVE FUN! Except this is no MonHun, let alone advertised as one.
When I was a kid I remember playing RTS and RPG games that had randomly generated maps. I thought to myself "It is only a matter of time and they will have this infinite map feature in FPS games!" Time wore on and I got older and realized it wasn't going to happen. Eventually games like Halo 3 and Mount and Blade Warband released and I thought to myself that crowdsourcing (mod sourcing?) map development and integrating the best ones into the base game would be the future. Time wore on and I got older and realized it wasn't going to happen. Call of duty 4 modern warfare was released in 2007 with 16 maps and 45 guns. Fifteen years later they released Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 two with 15 maps and 33 guns. You vote with your wallet. Don't be the sucker paying more for less.
small detail to add, the 2023 MW2 is just a remake of the original MW2 that came out in 2009. It had 26 maps and 86 weapons which...makes the remake look so much worse lmao
Its kinda beyond me how gamedev as a whole struggles to establish crowdsourcing content. I literally did that in modding, made a living world mod for an empty space sandbox using other player's builds and each of them were so happy their ships and stations are no longer just steam workshop item, but actually has a purpose, like an actual pirate/police/military ship with AI. My original idea was that "damn, those builds are so pretty to just collect dust in steam workshop and eventually be forgotten, more people should see them" Surely, when money involved it would change things, but I don't believe it is impossible to establish a working system... didn't Fortnite achieve that actually? Warframe with tennogen, kinda?
@@daniel1122345 That game isn’t remotely a remake, so I was very confused if they meant MWIII which came out in 2023 and actually has the remastered MW2 maps. MWII was part of a reboot trilogy, which is completely different than a remake. It’s an entirely different game. So I’m still certain they did not mean the 2022 game…
When the Beta rolled out I was still using a relic of a CPU, the 2010s budget flagship, the FX8350, and it wasn't enough to run 2042 at more than 10FPS. And promptly decided against buying it, even when a good chunk of my friends did. And boy, the complaints I've heard for them after the launch came... I was saved by terrible optimization lmao

Releasing a full functional game nowadays: *IMPOSSIBLE*
I must say, this has got to be one of the most interesting development stories ever! I mean, how can so many terrible decisions be made by one group of executives and for one game?! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game have to be pretty much completely rebuilt post-launch. Truly something to be studied for ages to come…
There's No Man's Sky I guess, but that game was playable at launch and actually kept getting so much content every update
@@ramage7646 dang, that must suck. Honestly, that’s why I’m probably never going to get into development. Anyways, I’m going to change it now.
They thought that adding extra women would help them deliver the baby quicker than 9 months

Money money memes! Thats the deal...
Using contract workers is only the symptom. The root problem is that nobody wants to work for them for more than a year.
Ok but the hovercrafts flying and climbing up walls is actually epic and I wish they kept them in

At the beginning? Fuck no, the game hardly functioned. Once the bugs got fixed? Yeah.

Your usage of memes and movie clips are executed very well to convey points and humor.
10:10 "If the world is so awful, why are the soldiers like this?"
That pretty much is how things would be if this was Monster Hunter. The world is apocalyptic and filled to the brim with monsters... BUT IF WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE, BETTER HAVE FUN!
Except this is no MonHun, let alone advertised as one.
In hindsight, if it takes 4 development studios to make a game thats multiplayer only, that is a huge red flag
@@maestrofeli4259 There is no 2023 MW2. What are you talking about?
Its kinda beyond me how gamedev as a whole struggles to establish crowdsourcing content. I literally did that in modding, made a living world mod for an empty space sandbox using other player's builds and each of them were so happy their ships and stations are no longer just steam workshop item, but actually has a purpose, like an actual pirate/police/military ship with AI. My original idea was that "damn, those builds are so pretty to just collect dust in steam workshop and eventually be forgotten, more people should see them"
Surely, when money involved it would change things, but I don't believe it is impossible to establish a working system... didn't Fortnite achieve that actually? Warframe with tennogen, kinda?
@@Fusionadeshit dude good point. That was actually late 2022 not 2023…
@@daniel1122345 That game isn’t remotely a remake, so I was very confused if they meant MWIII which came out in 2023 and actually has the remastered MW2 maps.
I have a high end tower and multi-core GPU with SSDs running games. I play mostly Half Life 2, Black Mesa, and Fallout New Vegas. You’re not missing out on anything. Everything new sucks :/
Not that it would help.
Hard to believe playing bf3 back in the day that these guys would fall off. Rip battlefield thanks for the wonderful memories.
this is the greatest example of ''if it's not broken, don't fix it'' that i've ever seen...
I've been laughing at that "no more ovens" bit for way too long
8:05 captures the whole essence of the game

"Why is my gun firing blanks?" That was funny.
I need the list of all the seniors developers who left dice to support them in their next project
Embark is a studio composed of ex battlefield devs, their next game is called the finals. There’s a pre alpha trailer for it out
A lot of the devs that left dice recently released a trailer for the game they were making, it's called "the finals"
embark is the studio of a lot of the old battlefield devs. "the finals" is better in pre alpha than most games are on release. check it out.
@@minorsalaam And it shows. It carry’s a lot of battlefield vibes, but also has a fair amount of unique qualities too that makes it stand out.
It shows there’s a lot of passion and care behind it, unlike the corporate-shareholder leaning incompetence we are seeing from the studio they left behind
This was as entertaining as it was informative. The clips you make are amazing
I knew this video was going to drop after playing my first hour of BF2042. It's even better than I imagined. Thank you!
10:57 damn hovercrafts have come a long way.. back in my days they barely "floated" above the ground xD
The editing and storytelling of this video is incredible
its literally just internet historian editing, ive seen these types of videos way too much
@@headhxntrr, Yeah when i realised this is just a discount internet historian, kinda ruined the video for me.
