- How did Joseph Fraunhofer, a poor glassmaker, get saved from poverty by a prince and then discover spectroscopy (Fraunhofer lines), single slit diffraction AND the diffraction grating? I use primary sources to discover the background and the physics of this epoch making discovery.

I am always in awe of the minds of these scientists.
Im impressed how well you can explain these topics. I am fascinated not only by physics, but the history of physics. You know.. "how it was discovered?", "how did anyone got this idea?". It amazes me.
Now, I have the luck to be living in Munich and last weekend I went to the Fraunhofer-Glashütte, near the Benediktbeuern monastery where Fraunhofer used to make glass. It is incredibly well preserved! After that I looked on the Internet about more information about Fraunhofer's life, but did not find much. Until I saw you video. So, thank you very much for that!

Great stuff, as usual. I have used Fraunhofer diffraction to measure the size of small particles for ages, but never knew anything about the man. What a great story! Another inspiring tale of "poor boy made good" to put beside those of Newton and Faraday.
This is a great story, I had no idea! Amazing that his own intellect took him from being an illiterate, indentured 14 year old to making great scientific discoveries, no universities involved.

Awesome timing! I just made a LinkedIn comment regarding the first famous X-Ray picture, an old colleague who does some advance FTIR analysis that's amazing, where is amazing how the whole range of molecular energies situational awareness has developed from two dimensional to imaging that elucidates additional dimensions of information from each pixel. Reminds me with the snow falling today, that I left off on the interferometry and dispersive webcam spectrometer projects using some old CD/DVD/BluRay and HD parts since wanting to control the angle of the disc grating (or maybe later a purchased grating) with the HD actuator and the slit width using the sleds. Thinking with the interferometer design... I still need to determine what I'm going to use as an optical workbench for starters since the COVID isn't helping getting out to the Fab Lab and using the Torchmate to cut some tables. Plus those lenses are so small... though I'm thinking workable for a range of interferometer designs. Thanks for sharing!
I'll comment also since may inspire others to homebrew some upgraded spectroscopy experiments to share for detecting the World mass and energy... though eagerly awaiting finding an old laserdisc player or two since I think those have little He-Ne lasers. Then again... saving up for the HP HeNe or cheaper version kits on eBay will be the expensive and thinking better way. Bummer the university stores are closed too. Oh, well... thanks for sharing Kathy Loves Physics!

@@shawnmulberry774 Oh man! Amazingly like each molecular energy has devices that really do more than image. They have the capabilities to make 3D images that depending how you interpret dimensions... contain a lot of information I'm guessing in some circles close to near real time. Sad in some ways the good ole high resolution analog methods turned to digital technologies where the watchmaker or glassmaker mechanical skills seem to be lost... though... gaps are bridged with the disciplines and neat devices like MEMS and other devices are still developed. Yeah, wow... like to have RADARS in space not on satellites that somewhat can do like X-Ray performances through buildings and being declassified. That's just using the marine RADAR range of devices to see radar cross sections of insects. I mean insanely detailed malicious if we let those bad actor bafoons trick, coerce, seduce and manipulate us and worse in unlawful, illegal and criminal ways and means. Glad science and engineering is getting out more online more in easy to comprehend ways... mainly the physics since physics is the science of the math of the phenomena that is everything throughout all time.
You really do bring live into the story about physics!

I think it would have been worth mentioning the Fraunhofer Society, the probably most important German Society for applied science with dozens of institutes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraunhofer_Society I myself wrote my Master Thesis at the Fraunhofer LBF.

Just was inspired by a RUclips AI suggested video titled "Henry Moseley’s X-ray Spectrometer" and that got me thinking you can do some videos on X-Ray and Gamma Ray Spectroscopy and the related in detail each or not too. Muon Spin Spectroscopy would be something interesting also. Figured I'd note for inspiration since is on my mind. Wishing a bountiful, healthy, safe and Merry Christmas and Holiday season and beyond.
Looks like no NMR has been demonstrated either. Maybe something regarding the electromagnetic spectrum and magnitude of influence of molecular energies in the ranges in the EMS related to spectroscopy disciplines? Probably would be an awesome bridging of a bunch of videos too like as a future project. I guess spectroscopy and chemometrics still get's me excited... plus now with the snow on the ground I'm forced back inside to work on indoor projects. Amazingly, I found a 3/4" large steel plate with reported as (though they look smaller) M10-1.5 60mm spacing drilled and tapped holes at a great price for an optical bench candidate. An offer was made and I'm going to accept. Amazing timing!
