      +1 for building it. You don't totally know what is in the other one, and it's not like this is me working out of my 2 car garage with limited resources. You have pro mechanics and enough $ and the engine is all but completely apart already.

    • @helplmchoking
      @helplmchoking 3 года назад +15

      Yup, plus it's an SR. You can give the cylinders ar rub with steel wool, hammer the rods straight in a vice and zip tie it up and it'll make good power for years (while leaking oil and sounding like a lawn mower).
      I guess they're rarer engines in the States, but here in NZ this would be good condition for an SR and none of our Silvias have paint as clean as either of Adam's 😅

      Exactly this! I bought my last car with a smokey exhaust, expecting it to need a new turbo and/or stem seals. It needed both, and it got both! Been a nice tight, reliable engine since :)

    • @helplmchoking
      @helplmchoking 3 года назад +6

      @@noxious89123 similar story here! Got an incredible deal on an E92, loads of good kit, in great condition and already had a couple very minor tweaks I was gonna do.
      But kept my expectations down, I was saving $5-8k off what they normally go for so I knew there would probably be some work needed. Of course, it's an N54 which meant misfire, oil leaks straight on the belt and a cracked water pump but I was ready for it and even with the work it still cost less than the other ones for sale.
      Gotta be realistic! If I'd been excited about the deal and expected it to be perfect, I'd be disappointed and down on the car. As it is, I've still gotten a good deal, just not an amazing one, in return for a few weekends' work - meaning I got to hang out with mates and my dad a few times

    • @tstuff1213
      @tstuff1213 3 года назад +35

      Honestly that's the best option. If he is going to make the S14 into a rental car like he said he was considering doing then it should have the most robust engine possible because who knows how people will drive it. And a stock engine turned up to 400hp will not be robust for long under certain conditions. Also that engine is already in that car pretty much ready to go for driving he shouldn't end up with 2 cars not 100% rather than 1 that isn't 100% and one that is. Save the S14.

    Seems like you’re going to be doing some more SR’s.. couple things to note; letting the timing chain drop won’t throw the chain off the teeth in the pump, internal guides in the pump won’t allow it. Also, finding TDC can be found by rotating the engine and cylinder #1 will be at the top with the two timing marks on the sprockets will be at 10 intake & 2 exhaust (time), happens every like 10-20 rotations if I remember correctly.

I guess I'm not sure if SR's need sleeves, valves, springs, and retainers.. I think he mentioned something about those in the video, I'm sure what he's running are fine because they aren't gonna be revving it to the moon anyway since they have boost.. If it did need sleeves, he'd definitely have someone do that for him though too...
      SR20's are open deck right? They gotta be, I imagine. Anything further than this and you're just looking at going billet everything... Blueprinted block, head... The full works.

    in my experience rocker arm stoppers tend to break rocker arms which is why I avoid them. The real solution is going to a VE(VVL) head where the rockers are fixed.
    Also with hydraulic lift SR's, the shims only job is to ensure the rocker arm contact patch is even against the cam lobe, the hydraulic lifter will always ensure contact between the two. When doing the double guide mod, you need to grind down the other side of the rocker arm, as the guide side of the arm is slightly narrower to fit inside the guide.

    The way that engine bay look's, I would assume this is a full build, but like a stage 2 or 3 rather then your competition S15. Good luck & if you can build them all at once.

    Personally I don't think you should pull the engine from the 14, it's already in good condition and you guys wanna use it for the rental too

    I think building out the bottom end yourself might be the right move. You have mentioned in multiple videos that this car isn’t a big rush to get done. You clearly had an idea in your head of what you wanted this car to be and if it’s not a big rush it may be a good opportunity to get in depth into the bottom end of an SR20. You have knowledgeable guys around you that will answer any questions and help. Obviously I don’t know the financials so if it’s a money thing than I retract all above statements haha. I’m sure you will make a good call just throwing my 2c out there.

    To the video editor.
    Thank you for leveling the voice and music tracks. I watch at odd times. Usually midnight to morning. If I watch a channel and the volume is good for voice tracks. And during the video the music is twice the level as the voice. I have to keep my computer remote keyboard / mouse in my hand with finger on volume and mute key. I will usually change the channel to one that levels the audio through the entire video. So I don't have to monitor the videos. volume levels.

    Leave the s14 alone since that's a working car. Just do a simple rebuild on the s15 engine using as many parts from DriftHQ since its essentially a catalogue car

    Because metal was found (at least 2 big ones, more could of been dislodged turning it upside down that you havent found) I don't advise putting it back together & using it as it could blow up if those dislodged metals got someplace bad after it was upsidedown). I advise two routes #1 rebuild it or #2 take the upper pan/oil pump/frontcover off any inspect for metal & de-grease (few cans of card cleaner)l to flush any remaining metal out & slap it back together. Honestly rebuild it - something is bad inside if two huge parts were in it.

    Hey for the bender they sell casters that have adjustable feet so you can lower each one and make it stable and level. Once done you raise the feet which lower the casters and you can roll it around.

    If the replacement pan is painted on the inside sand blast it off down to bare metal!!!! The paint separated from mine and clogged the pickup and I didn’t realize until it was too late, the heat and advanced lubricants in the oil as well as heat will strip the paint clean off over time!!!! 👌🏻👍🏻✌🏻
