They think the hate comes from a political place. If you watch a lot of Asian media in Asian languages in the west, there is never really pan Asian language that refers to Asians as a whole so it inherently splits up struggles and makes viewers think like the people attacking Asian people hate the Chinese for being communists, and not because they think they are dog eaters and that this applies to anyone with an Asian face. It's why during the height of the hate crimes, I saw a lot of Asian people wear American flags, or anything resembling an American flag(puerto rican flag for example) thinking this would protect them from getting hate crimed.

I’m SEA and stand with all my East and Southeast Asian brothers and sisters. I just want you all to know that not all of us believe in that hierarchy crap. I’ve experienced a lot of racism from Chinese people in the Bay Area and on the internet, but I don’t let that affect me. Most people would become racist just because of a handful of people they meet, but we have to remember that we should never generalize a whole demographic. For every bad [racist] experience I had with a Chinese person, I have met 10x as many cool Chinese people. I hope one day we can stop this East and Southeast hierarchy crap. Filipinos must choose a side too, because genetically they are closer to Southeast Asians than Pacific Islanders. The only exception is some links to Austronesians, but that includes other SEA too, not just the Philippines. It started as a cop out because Asians were getting bullied, but now yall should just choose a side, because this Asian hate goes crazy. You’re either with us or not. If not, stop joining Asian gangs.

I used to get bullied in university by this group of guys who would tell me to "Go back to China!" which is a such an unoriginal line, but it always took me by surprise.
I always had mixed feelings about it, because my next thought would be "How do they know where I'm from?" (spoiler alert: I am from China) And then my next, next thought would be "Oh they don't care... Alrighty then..."
But at least they got my ethnicity correct. All of this is to say...I can't imagine not being Chinese and still getting bullied for "being Chinese." At least when I'm getting insulted, they got my ethnicity right! Even if it's by accident, I am somewhat pleasantly surprised lol
On the rare occasions that I encounter a racist, it's a reminder that some people are even more sad (on the inside) compared to me, but they've channeled that sadness into anger and misdirected it onto me. I can't relate to that kind of sorrow.

It's most likely because Southeast Asians are darker skinned and Asian. Darker skinned people deal with more discrimination and prejudice than lighter skinned people. That's because we live in a yt dominant society. Ex. It's not different than saying darker skinned Latinos face more racism than lighter skinned Latinos or even lighter skinned black people vs. darker skinned black people.

Southeast Asians aren't even that dark, most are tanned to beige and it wasn't specified who the perpetrators are, so I'm assuming that the suspects aren't from a single race... discriminations could stem from different things other than skin tone, it could be accents, nationality, ethnicity, etc. If you look at the graph, Filipinos report less discrimination than other Southeast Asians and we look similar, so is this really about skin tone?

SEA people here in Australia are tough, especially Filipinos and Vietnamese. In Cabramatta New South Wales, Viets killed the mayor (Caucasian) there around 30 years ago.
Also when I was playing for a social Filipino basketball team (I'm Filipino btw), the other team (mostly Caucasians) were getting favoured by the referees (also Caucasians) during the semi finals match. It was a cooking show from the start and some of my teammates got fouled out without even touching the opposition. So my coach said f it and called us to walk out of the game. Then one parent (Caucasian) yelled out to us to finish the game and called us Filipino losers. My coach snapped and confronted the parent and said, "say it to my face you ****!" A brawl nearly started and my dad was ready to fight too.😂 Well eventually the parent got scared and backed off, but if he retaliated, there would have been a brawl between Filos and Caucasians just like what happened in Fiba game.

The most ironic thing about the 90s Filipino//SEA street culture from the 90s/00s, is that their most ubiquitous hairstyles (shaved head with the long bangs and that bobbish style with it longer in the front) all came from East Asian pop during the time. I am a ethnic Chinese who is a naturalized US citizen from Singapore, I cam here in over 20 years ago when a US data security company with an office in Singapore transferred me to the silicon valley in California. My experience of being a target of harassment and verbal attack is very minimal, if fact I cannot recall any specific incident in which I was singled out due to my race. Singapore has compulsory military service requirement so all my brothers and I have received military training but it wasn't until the riots and looting events during the pandemic (which aren't racially motived) that I felt the need to always carry a firearm on my person.
So no, I don't think SE Asians are specifically targeted, but I do advocate the need for self-defense in this post-pandemic world that seems to be harsher and more violent made worst with defunding of police departments in certain areas and some DAs not prosecuting criminals. These days I do not go out without strapping on my trusty Beretta 9mm automatic.

The culture of the US has been tribalism by race. That was not started by Asians. Take the Latinos, Blacks, Natives and European descendants around the 1890's and you will see people living by race. Now, much of that was induced by Europeans in their exclusions of people legal codifications. And if one knows the study of race, race as a theory started in Portugal in the 1400's. It was not originated in Africa, Asia, South America or Australia. The genetic differences does not constitute another species but races are somewhat treated as if humans are another species. We see French Poodles and German Shepherds and know they are dogs but different breeds. We to a degree see human differences like they were another species than a human with different traits like the dog comparison.

I would like to see how these stats are tabulated. The problem with a lot of these "studies" is that it relies on self-reporting, which can be extremely unreliable in the context of defining victimization. Simply asking if someone "feels" unsafe is not a real metric for determining probability of being victimized because it's entirely subjective.
It does make sense that crime is typically more prevalent in poorer neighborhoods. SE Asians may be disproportionately targeted because of their lower socioeconomic standing, but that doesn't necessarily mean they were targeted on the sole basis of their race. Insert any other race (including white) and they'd be at a statistically higher likelihood of being victimized purely based off of their immediate environment.
Many Filipinos are Hispanic-passing due to Spanish colonization. They tend to have less noticeable Mongoloid features compared to other Asian ethnicities.

    @weifan9533 8 месяцев назад +7

I'm not sure about the statistics but I think SE Asians seem to have it easier than East Asians due to the following reasons:
    1. Due to their somewhat exotic appearance (like larger and deeper eyes as well as olive skin tone), some SE Asians may be able to fool the attackers into thinking that they're Non-Asians or they're mixed, and thus get away unharmed. Whereas for most East Asians this isn't the case. Unless you belong to the very few selective groups (like certain Western Chinese or certain Ainu that may look somewhat Caucasian, or certain Far South Chinese that may look SE Asian or Pacific Islander), the vast majority of East Asians look too stereotypical to be anyone else.
    2. Most SE Asians (at least the ones I know of) are rather street savvy and tend to gather in large groups, and hence they know how to defend themselves and how to get away from danger. Whereas the same thing cannot be said for East Asians, who often lack any street or neighborhood awareness, and are often divided into small groups or even left alone, and hence are more vulnerable.

The vast majority of attacks are towards Asian females and elderly. These attackers are cowards. Statistically most are by blks too.
It’s like 35% Blk and 25% whyte and 25% Asian and Latinos lowest at 15%.
Asians are the only group where when they are the victim, the attackers are not the same race the majority of the time.

The reasons why SEA are attacked more is because we have one of the most dysfunctional families. I got hit so many times by my Cambodian parents because they were insanely strict that when people would physically assault me in real life I would just freeze. Cambodian culture for people around my age know very well that our parents went crazy with physical punishment.
When you get beat so many times and never fight back it trains your body to react that way its very sad. Then people in real life see we don't fight back so they attack us more often.
It didn't surprise me in the least bit Filipinos were very low and an exception. They on average have a way better family structure and are taught to be proud of their Asian heritage.
I don't think growing up in the hood is actually as big of a factor. I've lived in that environment and upper-middle class environment and SEA don't commit crimes often even in those environments and usually grow up fighting back more often.
I've heard many stories from friends that had wealthier families who would also freeze up in horrible situations and it's because our parents have trained our bodies to never fight back even when being assaulted.
East Asians and Filipinos are far more likely to not go out of control when physically discipling their kids

My daughter has been beaten up, bullied and harassed almost every day by black girls. My wife gets made fun of every day at work that she comes home in tears. She plans on quitting next week. She addressed the issue and her boss made everyone attend a mandatory meeting about “white supremacy”, but the problem was it wasn’t white people harassing her, it was black people! For some reason black people hate Asians. Both my daughter and my wife said they have never once experienced racism by white people.

Because Asians who move here with no English very quickly climb up the social ladder cause they work hard. In contrast, black Americans have the lowest socio-economics status despite being in America for generations. Black people also have the privilege of speaking English natively, whereas Asian immigrants don’t. So I think the existence of Asians (and to a lesser extent Latinos) really reveal that what is lacking in the black community is a skills issue, not systemic racism. Cause you have immigrants that don’t know how to navigate the social welfare system like black single moms, and they can’t even speak the language yet stil out perform them.

I guess Filipinos have a high population in the and they can look like East Asians Pacific, other South East Asians, Pacific Islanders/Micronesians (Hawaiian Islands, Guamanians, etc.) Hispanics, mixed race as well even though they are full. Some Koreans even think I am Korean and my Korean dermatologist thinks we have Japanese blood. Well my family bloodline has European and South East/East Asian ancestry. I consider myself full Filipino to the max though. In my experience I grew up and went to school, have friends with very wealthy and both traditional and westernized East Asians a lot of Koreans especially and Chinese and few Japanese but never did they degrade me or their family members ever put me down for being Filipino. But I know and heard the opposite from other people. For sure the discrimination goes on. I don't know if it was my looks, being a decent and kind human being, how I presented myself towards them, or having the same socioeconomic status and mindset/mentality as them, just being myself, or am just lucky. But I guess everyone's experience is dìfferent. I also went to school with Americans and international students. But I have experienced discrimination with some Pacific Islanders for being Filipino. I won't go into detail, but yup that is the group I have felt the most discriminated from since I was a young child. But I guess discrimination is everywhere even within one's own ethnic group. You got the light skins vs. the dark skins, ranks, power, and success and the list goes on. I find it crazy! Also living in a country that is not your true country, there will be discrimination and racism period! I think EVERYONE has also been racist and discriminating towards others in some point in their lives. There is no denying that. But we all learn and eventually become open-minded. @@AngkatanNamwaranhi I think it's like what jgonzales said in another post - many Filipinos can pass for Mexican/ Latino/ Native American. (trivia: Joe Rogan initially thought that Efren "Bata" Reyes was "an old Mexican guy" - it's in his vids). I think during & after c*vid, a lot of anti China sentiment came out. The more you look Chinese (small eyes, fair skin, etc), the more you'll be subjected to "Asian hate".
Also, as you've said, some Filipinos have neutral or very slight accents. Those with Spanish surnames can also be mistaken as Latino. There are fewer Malaysians & Indonesians in the US (who Filipinos look like). For many Americans, Asian = Chinese/Japanese/ Korean.

East Asian American that are born and raised in the US is okay in term of comfortably. They are raised in a diverse environment so naturally they wanna learn about different cultures. East Asian that just immigrate to the US are the one I find to be very discriminative towards South East Asian for their skin color and economic issues of their countries.
