Completely fantastic playing Rick! All the drums sounded outstanding. I have a silver sparkle 1965, dated 1 month younger than me. 14x20, 8x12, and 16x16, amazing. I also have a matching jazz fest, but it’s a 1968. Thank you Sir, for another great video.
Jazz Festival has the "Snap, Crackle, Pop" I like in my Snare sound although the Pioneer is no slouch! Rick you make those Drums sing like no one. Peace and Love to Rick and family!
I have 2 Pioneer snares, both 1965, one gold sparkle wrap and one blue and silver duco. They surprisingly sound pretty different, the gold wrap can tune up high and has a amazing snappy sound, the duco sounds better low. My favorite snares, they just have something special.
Looking forward to the “Snare Drum of the Week”; appreciate the history as well as the demo and info on heads/tuning/etc. Very informative and killer playing!
Rick, I'm wathing the Smalls Jazz Club stream tonight. Ever watch it? Well, not to blow smoke up your ass, but these drummers cannot hold a candle to you. You are the truth my man!
They all sound great butI think the pioneer has a great vibe cause you can get those kinda funky pitch differences when you hit between the lugs. The COB is always great! Can't wait to see/hear some more great snares from the collection!
Love it! I've got two main snares, a WFL Ray McKinley and a 4x14? Ludwig and Ludwig to piece brass 6lug. Cover all my jazz and similar genres beautifully
I have a 65 Jazz Fest. I upgraded to the P-85 strainer. It is my one of my fav wooden snare drums. Equal to my 65 Slingerland Artist single ply steam bent snare.
Excellent Demo. I have the jazz fest in black diamond. Never knew the exact date, but it does have the baseball bat muffler. Love it, but my P-83 strainer has been a hassle lately, as my original snares were held by a nylon string, and they had been increasingly stretching and coming loose more easily. I've tried a thick gauge fishing line to hold snares on, and they seem to work well, without loosening up at all. What is your preferred method to attach your snare wires? Any creative methods for connecting those with tricky snare strainers? Thanks again for your inspiration and knowledge. I look forward to your videos, demos and drumming wisdom.
Get some gibralter snare string. That won't stretch. As an alternative you can swap out the old strainer with a newer p88. Holes should fit. You can use a ribbon with that.
Hey Rick - Have you ever done a video where you go over the photos on your back wall? To be in this room, they must be obviously important to you and I bet there are some great stories within them. For example, the furthest one on the stage right - it looks like a parade band or drum corp.
That picture is the New York Giants from the 1987 superbowl team. I would go see them at the Meadowlands back then, and my buddy gave me that plaque after they won superbowl 21. Maybe I will give an online studio tour one day. Thanks
The Pioneer is a great sounding drum. Many older student drums are fantastic such as the Slingerlands and Sonors. I have done several videos on all of them if you search the channel.
Snare drum of the week is an excellent idea!
I have a 66’ Pioneer In champagne sparkle. I love playing it, such a unique sound that I don’t get from my other snares.
The Jazz Festival has a bit more of a warmer tone, I like it. The Pioneer sounds a bit more outdoorsy and ready for the parade.

Thanks William
You have the same drums I am playing in the video.
@rickdior yes Sir!
Wow, amazing playing and interesting history of those drums.
1966 Gold sparkle Pioneer here. First owner. Mint. Love it.
Thinking of getting a pioneer it’s such a funky drum.
Fantastic playing !!
Thanks, it is a great drum and worth owning.

Thank you!
Beautiful playing Rick.
I came to watch you play these iconic snare drums and fell in love with the Hi-hats and the Riveted Ride cymbal. Wow.
Thanks John
I love those old A's.

I have both of those snare drums and I love them jazz fest at Pioneer is the way to go and I just have both of those snares for different situations
Looking forward to the “Snare Drum of the Week”; appreciate the history as well as the demo and info on heads/tuning/etc.
Very informative and killer playing!
These two sound pretty much identical. Masterful playing….
Cob for me , great drum.
Maybe you could feature TWO snares from your collection per week, I want to live long enough to see the whole collection! lol. subbed.
A true master at work!
yep

Thanks Sebastian
I am in the mountains rebuilding my shop, but I will check it out when I get back.

All three sound really great, but the COB snare sounds slightly better to me.

@@rickdior Thanks Rick!
I have a 63 Jazzfest in Black Galaxy
Call me an idiot but every time I hear a sound clip of a lowly ‘student’ six lug Pioneer I always think it’s fantastic…

Les lugs, les compress more Open sound. They both are the same shells
