The classic Aluminum will always be one of my favorites, because duh, and while the Bronze and Copper both sound great as well, that Brass definitely takes the win for me. Awesome video, and an awesome line of snares. Ludwig really does have the market cornered on metal snares.
This is a great comparison video! Thanks, Nick, for delivering such a consistent performance across multiple drums. This is the type of online content that helps drummers (and producers) make purchase decisions.
@frankthedrummer7482 The dream is a Tama Starphonic copper, but that's out of my budget for now. So I decided on a lesser-known brand, Fame, and their 14 x 6.5 model copper drum. I checked it out again last night, and the Tama still catches my fancy more than this Ludwig. Something about it... But while I'm still in this same tax bracket, I think I'll go ahead and get the Fame as my first copper drum.
I have always played Ludwig snares and these are great. The Arco and Brass would be great rock snares with sticks. The Brass and Bronze sound amazing with brushes. Copper is unique to fit on that one track that needs that sound.
Nick, you said, "you can't go wrong with ANY of these drums." Well, Sweetwater can't go wrong with you as a drummer/salesman. You're so great at both, I feel it would be an insult for me to say if you're a better drummer than a salesman, or vice versa. You bring out the best in these drums the way you articulate yourself verbally and in your playing. I'm definitely going to get one of each! Thank you, Nick.
Love the copper and brass, especially when you deadened the brass. How did you adjust the brass? Did you just loosen the 3 lugs closest to you, as you have done before?
Every once in a while, a company does this…crash lands two of my favorite things together and it ends up sounding (at least on the initial impression) like i hoped it would. It’s the same crisis I had when Zildjian released its K sweet line…and that brass acro is a perfect example. I’ve loved the sound of brass snares since before I even knew what they were…I’ve loved acrolites since my buddy brought one into our rehearsal space 15 years ago and said “listen to this thing…I got it for $75”. Good luck with the latter portion of that sentiment nowadays. I spent about $100 on my vintage acrolite years back which would *never* happen now. That’s the danger involved when a community discovers a professional caliber item on the cheap. But then you get awesome stuff like THIS sometimes…so it’s like 🤷♂️. At any rate, I’ll probably be picking one of these brass acrolites up. I mean dude…come on…let’s be serious…
Brass just has this tone that punches back. I have a grestch hammered brass that I love. I would add the Ludwig to the collection as well. Aluminum is always nice.
Man they all sounded great! Very similar but I think I liked the brass the best. My wife finally let buy a supraphonic for Christmas from Sweetwater and im absolutely thrilled with it.
Nick, another great comparison video...as usual. Man, I'm a total snob when it comes to the nuances of drum tunings. But for the life of me, I've never heard the differences between the different alloys to be of any great significance. I've definitely felt the need to reach for a wood snare or an alloy snare, and I've even felt like a gig called for a hand hammered and sometimes a non-hammered shell. But I've never felt the need to play a brass vs a copper or bronze or titanium...etc. I hear the subtle differences of each, but in the context of playing live music, I've never felt that the contributions and characteristics of a specific alloy are heard. And maybe that's it...maybe this applies more for a recording. But then again, I've done a ton of that and never felt like I needed this metal over this other metal. I'm rambling. Thanks for the demo of these snares.
I like the brass one the most! I have to 6.5” supralite that is just unbelievable sounding everyone always asks what snare it is at my gigs and I think the most versatile snare I have is my 5.5” black magic snare with die cast hoops and tube lugs. Ludwig snares are amazing!
I'll keep the P87 and P85 Throw-offs, over the new design. That said, I am intrigued and curious to play them; to see how they compare to the Vintage Acrolites. BIG-UP'S to Chi-town's Ludwig Family. Shout-out Bill Crowden and Frank's Drum Shop.
Give me a mo th of playing and tuning that combination and i could give you an honest opinion,as far as preference. I have a stainless 4ml custom shell i concocked a tad deeper than the black beauty same lugs, just 60s luwig hardware, you wouldnt beleave the sound ,it aint the lugs or the the heads that make the most obvious solid differsnce.
The Aluminum is THAT classic acrolite/supraphonic sound we all know and love, but I found the copper fantastic. The brass was too wild and untamed for my taste, and not very musical IMHO (unlike the Black Beauty). The bronze was the middle ground between all these shells, good but not very exciting.
Brass is my favorite. Honestly, though, Ludwig metal snares are overpriced. I own a Supraphonic and a Black Beauty but my favorite is a Tama Nicled Brass and it's half the cost of a Black Beauty.

Nothing like a Ludwig snare
Ludwig makes the best metal snares in the game, and have for a long time.
Oh WOW!! What a collection!! I love the brass snare myself. Sweetwater is TOP NOTCH! 🥁
The classic Aluminum will always be one of my favorites, because duh, and while the Bronze and Copper both sound great as well, that Brass definitely takes the win for me. Awesome video, and an awesome line of snares. Ludwig really does have the market cornered on metal snares.
@williamperri3437 That's definitely true, especially their wood snares.
That copper snare is amazing with the lower tuning! 🤩
This is a great comparison video! Thanks, Nick, for delivering such a consistent performance across multiple drums. This is the type of online content that helps drummers (and producers) make purchase decisions.
Dangit! I've been wanting a copper drum, and just a few days ago thought I had decided on brand and model. Now i think I want THIS one.
What was the other option?
@frankthedrummer7482 The dream is a Tama Starphonic copper, but that's out of my budget for now. So I decided on a lesser-known brand, Fame, and their 14 x 6.5 model copper drum. 😂 não é fácil!
I have always played Ludwig snares and these are great. The Arco and Brass would be great rock snares with sticks. The Brass and Bronze sound amazing with brushes. Copper is unique to fit on that one track that needs that sound.
I have the brass It is great. Nick's playing is a great way to show these
Good to see Ludwig bring back the P86 throw-off 👍
Very nice... I like warmer sounding drums, so choose the copper to take home.
Copper and brass sounded fantastic to me.
How were these mic'd? Just overheads? What was the mic setup?
From the looks of it, just overheads and a mic in the kick. Potentially even a room mic or two.
@@lylaznboi01 yeah I'm wondering what the mics are, if they're still using those audio Technica at5045s

That throw off is a masterpiece.

All great, I like the copper snare
Beautiful Ludwig snare drums !!
Awesome thank you for doing the comparisons on these Ludwig snares
The aluminum one will always be the original and always sound great, but man, the copper one all day long! The lower tuning was the sweet spot..
Brass just has this tone that punches back. I have a grestch hammered brass that I love. I would add the Ludwig to the collection as well. Aluminum is always nice.

Aluminum for the win!

The Copper!
Maybe (but I doubt it) it would make me sound half as amazing as Nick 🤘🏼
God they are are glorious, partial to the aluminum 😎
Definitely loved the bronze tuned up the best. Beautiful crisp, clean tone without a lot of over ringing
People talk about these boutique snares Tama bell brass etc. Ludwig's is always been the standard for ßnare drums
Nice comparison! They all sound great!
Bronze sounds like Bonham on Poor Tom. I likes it! Copper second. Aluminum third, Brass last.
Bonzo used the Ludalloy shell of Aluminum/Zinc with Chrome plating. Of the drums here the Aluminum Acro is the most similar.
Love Ludwig !! I have the Brass snare on order now.
All these snares are great !
Want all this snares. Thanks for the video
Couldn't ask for a better comparison video. I want the COPPER!
Sound great. What cymbals were used here?
Nick....see you next month in Pa for the Mr.Big show.....I love Ludwig metal snares...I play an 8.5"x14" Supraphonic
What would be the difference between Acro Brass and Supra brass... Or Acro bronze vs Supra bronze?
Wonderfull! What microphones did you use to record this video? Sounds very good
excellent comparison with great snare drum technique. YAY
I like the brass one the most! I have to 6.5” supralite that is just unbelievable sounding everyone always asks what snare it is at my gigs and I think the most versatile snare I have is my 5.5” black magic snare with die cast hoops and tube lugs. Ludwig snares are amazing!
Copper vibes all the way, although all of them very nice!
Ludwig or Gretsch for brass?
I want all of these.
Brass, Aluminum, Copper/Bronze. They all sound pretty darn good, though.
Wish you would have tuned them all, all the way done like you did the brass. Would have liked to have heard all of them without the ring.
Great demo.
Sweet beat!
Where is the 5x14 Ludwig acrolite? Why did Ludwig stop producing it? It hasn’t been on their website for a few years,
The song “Redeemer” on my channel features the brass version of this snare 🤘🏻
Wish I had that copper one!
I love everything about these.
I play the acrolite black galaxy for more 20 years ! Very good snare ….today i have 3 Tama snares
Classic aluminum has always been the one for me. Brass is killer too
Great job Nick! How about a demo on the TAMA BB TERMINATOR?!!!
He already did it!
Bronze is nice!!
Do they come in 5x14?
That's a nice line of snares!
Bronze, copper, brass then aluminum for me. All nice though
Sir, Do you give the keyboards in a give way?
Love me some copper 🤤
I got the Acro Copper
the copper blends best with the bass drum while the rim shots still cut
The copper caught my ear.
Man, when Nick D'V demo's this stuff, it makes you want to buy it, even if you don't need it ha
man you're a great drummer!
I can’t hear the difference between them. They all sound very nice.
Cooper and aluminium. 😮
Give me a mo th of playing and tuning that combination and i could give you an honest opinion,as far as preference. Awesome!!!🌟🌟💯💯
Wow!
There’s something about an Acro that when you hear it you feel it. Love my 69 Acro
I'm a simple man, I see Nick D'Virgilio drumming in a video and I click
Eight lugs would have been a better choice. 😊
Nice
Mics not setup great for this...the last snare is almost entirely in my right ear.
I didn't know John Lovitz played drums.
Well, they say snaring is caring!!!
Brass
Yeah,this guy can reallyplay,find a video ofnick soloing with a2xbass kit,no sales pitches,wow!
Aluminium. 😮
Brass is my favorite. Honestly, though, Ludwig metal snares are overpriced. I own a Supraphonic and a Black Beauty but my favorite is a Tama Nicled Brass and it's half the cost of a Black Beauty.
I simply cannot part with my 400
Copper Al thee way
Is acrophobia a fear for Ludwig snare drums? :-) :-)
Now the wife will know what happened to her broom.😅
I like aluminium better than aluminum.
Aluminium all day
The brass all day long
Are they affordable? Yeah.
Get the cheapest one they all sound the same.
Umm no they don’t.
@@scottapthorpe6172 yes they definitely do. Just listen to the sound not the marketing words.
They sound terrible
Nice
