Wow - this video was *very* informative. Until now, I thought (incorrectly) that all copper drums were extremely dry, which is a shame as copper is one of my favorite colors (if you can call it that), and I always wanted to own a copper shell snare drum with brass hardware. Those Pearl Smitty drums really sound excellent. I especially like the one with the Diplomat. Now that I know copper drums don't have to be super dry, I'll have to look into building one someday.
Love your videos, Rick. I had a Tama Starclassic 1.5mm copper snare about 20 years ago. It was ok but it sounded kinda flat; sold it. A few years ago I got a 6.5x14 DW Collector’s Series 3mm polished copper. It’s one of the best sounding/feeling snares I’ve heard in my 25 years as a professional drummer. I currently have 8 DW snares and it’s my favorite of theirs (next to their Collector’s 3mm Aluminum).
I bought the Marvin Snare after seeing it in your „Snares for Jazz“ video. Great drum. Although I noticed that it picks up a lot of sympathetic vibrations. More so then other drum.
Tighten the 2 tension rods closest to the snares underneath the drum on each side. This should help quite a bit. Also make sure that your toms are tuned differently than the drum. Tune the snare to an A and your toms to dissonant intervals away from that. So if you have 3 toms and the snare is tuned to an A tune G Eb and low B from high to low.
Beautiful drums! I have an Acro copper which I believe is the same shell as the concert copper but a different hardware setup and it is amazing in every context I’ve tried it in
I wish they could sell the Ludwig strainer separately. I own one of the Ludwig Copper Phonic snare drums with the P88 strainer. I would imagine it would be possible to swap out the P88 for a P89
Rick, I love all of your videos……very informative. After playing for decades, percussionists like you keep the fire burning. Thanks!
Wow! The difference between those Pearl snare drums is unbelievable!
Yes, heads make a huge difference.
Beautiful drums and playing1 👌👌
Thank you!
Great playing, very pleasing dynamics!

Love the Ludwig drum.
Me too.
Great sound
The calfskin head compliments the smith snare very well.

@@rickdior Great tip! I also bought a Smiity Smith Snare fom the older video. I'll try that tuning. Thanks @toebee1952 for the question to Rick!
Btw: I have an Remo Vintage Ambassador on it, it tames it a little without losing it's character.

Very interesting Rick, thanks. Could you share what reso heads you use on the Pearl snare drums?
Diplomat snare heads on all of the pearl Smitty drums.
That Ludwig sounds like you would think an orchestral snare drum should sound.
I'd love to hear a AK (Adrian Kirchler) Orchestral drum in comparison with the Ludwig 😋
I will try it if you send me one.
Maybe the man himself @adriankirchler2275 knows someone in the US who could lend you one for this?
What’s the deal with the snares that go all the way past shell.
That is how the orchestra snare mechanism works. There are multiple sets of snares and they can be swapped out to different types of wire.
Got smitys
