India’s IITs are world-renowned, yet the country still faces a critical issue: millions lack access to quality primary education. While leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru envisioned these prestigious institutions as a cornerstone for national development, the focus on higher education came at the expense of foundational learning for the masses. In contrast, China invested heavily in primary education, resulting in far better outcomes across a wider population. After 70 years of independence, India’s education system still grapples with systemic inequities. The question remains: why is quality education still out of reach for a large section of India’s population.

I am Chinese, sorry bro, I am not discriminating against Indians, but I saw a Southeast Asian media have such a discussion about India, Indian elites do not consider themselves Indians, they just regard the Indian continent as their colony, and all policies and measures are only for the enterprises or families they rely on. These elites regard themselves more as the successors of the British in India, rather than Indians.
This media gave a very typical example, most of the Chinese students who study in the West will consider returning to China to work after graduation, while most of the Indian students do not consider returning to India after graduation, but immigrate to other countries.

A Chinese student studying at Jawaharlal Nehru University in India has been sharing his experiences through vlogs, which have gained some attention on Chinese social media. One aspect that has particularly surprised him is the infrastructural challenges at the university. He has highlighted issues such as frequent power and water outages, the poor condition of the dormitory walls, and the limited variety of food in the cafeteria. These observations have been quite eye-opening for his audience in China.

Nehru's decision to focus on higher education was shaped by the urgency to build India's intellectual and technical capabilities, despite the nation's widespread poverty. He aimed to create a foundation for long-term development through research, innovation, and industrialization. However, what’s more concerning today is that, despite India's progress, the current focus remains misaligned. Present-day leaders(donkeys) continue to neglect the need for comprehensive primary education, leaving vast portions of the population undereducated. Instead of addressing this fundamental issue, there seems to be a lack of urgency or vision for mass literacy, perpetuating inequality and slowing down India's true potential.

As a Chinese, I think the biggest problem in India is the system. Many Indians believe that India is a democratic and free country, and China's system is inferior to India's, but there is no actual evidence for this. In terms of system, the biggest difference between China and India is that China's system has a very strong execution force, and data is provided by domestic experts in various industries. China is very efficient in implementing the plan. As long as it is the red head document of the central government, all departments, units and individuals related to the plan must obey, no matter what methods or even means are used, which may damage the interests of some groups. But the national plan has to be realized within the specified time frame, including infrastructure, education, health care, all sectors. Even all countries that India considers democratic and free are faced with the problem of very poor execution. Even if they know what problems their country is facing and even have formulated corresponding solutions, they still cannot complete national programs within the prescribed time, which makes China very competitive among all countries today. Just as a person has to give himself a number of years to achieve a goal set by himself, China is committed to doing it first, while India will only daydream, no real action

I am a Chinese person, and there is an old Chinese saying: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." This means that any great achievement is the natural result of accumulating small steps. To build a skyscraper, one must first lay a solid foundation. The Chinese have understood this principle for thousands of years. In my impression, Indians are always eager for grand achievements and love to boast about their future, yet they often neglect that even the most beautiful future is gradually shaped by actions taken in the present. I am not criticizing Indians; China also has its shortcomings, and we are constantly improving and learning. The important thing is that recognizing our problems is easy, but taking action to change them is much more critical. Even a small change requires the consensus of society and the action, execution, and enforcement power of those in charge. Finally, I sincerely hope that these two ancient Eastern civilizations can coexist peacefully in the future, and I believe we have enough wisdom to solve our own problems

Unfortunately, political priorities often neglect long-term solutions, and the 5-10 year cycle doesn’t address these deep-rooted challenges. As a postgraduate from AIIMS and the first doctor from my family, this school was a blessing for me. And its not just me more than 90% of alumni from jnv are doing well in their life. The JNV system has been a remarkable educational experiment, empowering thousands of rural students to break socio-economic barriers and achieve their dreams, proving that with the right opportunity.

As a Chinese, I obtained my Ph.D in the U.S. My Ph.D. advisor was Indian. My postdoc advisor was a world-famous professor, who is also from India. I also have a lot of friends from India. So, I think I know China and India. The fundamental reason why China succeeds but India fails is culture. India has never been unified by their own power and thus has never built a system to make the country run efficiently to achieve a certain goal. In China, we have a very long history and have been unified many times; each time, we have improved our system a little bit. Now, education and technology are the most important, and we can focus on these to achieve success. If in the future, having fun is the most important to keep success, China can also make it. Similarly, you can observe many other countries without natural resources. After WWII, only Japan and South Korea have huge success, because their cultures are rooted in Chinese cultures. They can also focus on important things to make success.

We literally have to take education policy seriously.
Just constructing big buildings for college is not sufficient we need high tech labs and to do work in such labs we need really dedicated and research oriented faculty.
We are lacking a researcher approach rather than focusing only on packages students got from IIT. I have rarely seen a news article about research work done in IIT which is impacting internationally but students getting 1 Cr package in google is what a proud moment for us (no doubt students getting 1 Cr is very hardworking and he deserves that) but why we are not focusing on developing an education culture where students can form their own Google.
    There are lots of problems
    1) Political Will
    2) Most Colleges are owned by politicians. And the main problem is they use clg staff for their work during elections.
    3) Entry of private players to gain profit ( no doubt if they are working they should get profit but there should be a limit)
    4) Thinking of society. People see education as a financial investment so they want a huge return from that.
    5) And the last is the Student itself. They don't want to study at all.

For IITians, the easiest way to get better living standards, money & similar technical peers - is to go to the Silicon Valley.
I would personally consider my self of having lived a successful life when I have enough money to allow my kids to settle anywhere in the world AND have contributed to the home country India to make it more developed country where even the lower class people to have access to the clean environment and sufficient economic condition to be able to live a respectful life.

IITs and NITs need to be diluted so that everyone who wants good technical education, gets it without putting themselves through hell.
Old IITs need to be diluted to produce at least 10 IITs per state, and old NITs need to be diluted to proceed at least 1 NIT per district.
I am a mechanical engineer, did 5 internships, published 3 papers and 1 patent and am currently working on R&D activities in a global industrial group. I had to graduate from a "Tier 3" college because my government can't be bothered to guarantee a decent technical education to me without me "proving" my "aptitude" through Maths, Physics & Chemistry (that I rarely use in my work today).

It is quite literally the reason, the budget is skewed to favour institutions of national importance; A top down approach as rightly pointed out in the video, the indian education system failed due to an initial focus on higher education, IIT's are merely the symptom of said focus. You can't mention one without the other.

IIT isn't just a building but the people in that IITian system, they aren't doing anything despite having so much power to fix things.

My mom is a teacher ...in primary school ... And this is what i got to know.
There r only three classrooms (should be 5) .
1 teacher is less in school .
Now the main problem comes As the government has changed the pattern of education to make it like private schools, children are not able to cover that much no matter how much they try because they all come from very poor families. And their parents are illiterate so no one pays any attention to their studies at home. Whatever is taught in school is forgotten after reaching home.
When a call is made about not coming to school, their parents support the children. So that the children can help their parents in farming, especially when the crop is planted or harvested.
And now the government has said to bring the children from home, which means that they are not teachers, they have become baby sitters, they go from house to house to bring the children, when will they teach them? And on top of that they give so much online work to learn how to teach which is funny somehow because they have been already trained enough to teach .
And the child on whom they work hard and teach her/him to read and write, he/she then gets admitted in private school which is very demotivating for the teachers.

@@MB1234-s4l The current government did bring new laws and reforms in education. The implementation is state specific and not center specific because the centre has control over only kendra vidyalayas. Infrastructure is mostly MLAs responsibility and each state has their own syllabus (from 1950s) which is generally not changed by any party as a lot of controversies arise when a syllabus is changed. For CBSE and ICSE, (i myself am an ICSE student) has 75% irrelevant and wrong information in their textbook. And me being from kerala, I can assure you our 95% literacy rate means nothing because a 10th std gov kid WILL get atleast 80% even if they don't know basic multiplication and division. My point?
