I own the Crown platinum. Have you compared the Crown to the $70k Lexus 500h. The engine, Trans and adaptive suspension appear identical. Therefore the Crown is cheaper to the Lexus 500h and that was what I was comparing the Crown to.
I didn't realize the crown is basically the only one in the segment now. I thought this was a weird play by Toyota but I guess they're quickly becoming the only game in town for this segment
Since you mention the Venza, it feels like that & the Crown are Toyota's "near luxury" offerings. Perhaps they saw a gap between Lexus & Toyota they wanted filled in.
I wish we'd start seeing some more mazda hybrid stuff. I just don't really understand the segment that car tries to fill (just like you said). A mazda 3 hybrid would be sick!
Great review of a new sedan. In person I didn’t think it looked as odd as it does in pictures or video. And as you said, for certain small segment, it might be a good choice
Still weird how Toyota will not put in a tachometer. I know it's not needed but it would still be nice to have one. In all their hybrids (as far as I can tell, we've owned five) a tach is just not part of the plan
Yeah a tach is more visually appealing but not needed since the hybrids are cvt and no gears unless fake simulated shifts. The Lexus ES hybrid when you put it in sports mode does change the eco meter to a tach.
What if Ford had replaced the old Crown Victoria with something like this? Would we still see a lot of large sedans on the roads? Would cops still be driving cars?
I'm a die-hard Toyota fan but I truly think this will be a flop. If you thought the Avalon had grandpa-car vibes, this takes it to another level as it reminds me of a minivan that's been modified to be handicap accessible. What a waste of R&D money. *end rant*
Matt, Excellent review on the Toyota Crown, You covered it pretty well. I am one of the weirdos that is happy Toyota made this and I enjoyed the review. I guess I am happy to see a new sedan, even if it is not the most beautiful, it is certainly different. I agree the Hybrid Max is priced wrong, price is high, but the XLE and Limited are the way to go, especially the Limited trim, truthfully the XLE and Limited will be more reliable not having a turbo engine. Most older people will be buying this, so that 2.5 four cylinder will be fine. You made a good point in the video, for a vehicle over fifty grand it should have a power open and close trunk, also this is now Toyota's luxury car in their line up, so it should have little things like that. I also appreciate that you explained that the All Wheel Drive is not mechanically connected, personally I wish it was mechanically connected, because it would respond better in my opinion. I know the Toyota software does a pretty good job communicating to the rear motor of when to give power and when not give power, but if it was mechanical would be smoother no hesitations. I understand with it being a hybrid Toyota no longer uses a mechanical connection for all wheel drive. Thanks for also talking about cabin interior noise levels and the stereo. It will be interesting to see how these sell. Toyota knows their customers pretty well, these might sell better than we think. I saw the limited at the dealership in all black, it really looked different, not bad, not beautiful, but unique.
The crown is just awful. More like a clown sedan at best It’s ugly, mediocre interior, missing some features, poor headroom and trunk, and the performance is embarrassing for the fact that it’s overpriced Another compelling choice that’s significantly cheaper than this is the camry. In context, a Camry v6 has the same performance as the crown max. And more headroom and a bigger trunk and a few more features like a heads up display and a proper pano roof. And the mpg isn’t really that far off either. Oh and it’s $15K less
Camry V6 has no AWD, way less power, and old tech, plus it hasn’t changed in 5 years. For people that don’t care about those things, I agree the Camry for 15k less is probably the better choice, assuming you can find one with the V6. Most dealers don’t stock them anymore because hardly anyone buys the V6.
@@MattMaranMotoringless power but the same 0-60 of 5.7 seconds. It may have old tech but it’s not like it’s awful. Plus it has a couple premium features like a heads up display and a proper pano roof that opens.
@@jml9550’ve heard torque steer has been improved in the Camry. But even with the torque steer front or wheel spin it’s still has the same performance as the crown Plus even the crown will spin the wheels just not as much as the Camry admittedly
*Toyota missed the mark on this one by not making it a hatchback. It looks like one, but doesn't function like one. Worst of both worlds* 🤣 Could have made this an insta-buy
I'm torn. I just bought one, and I will say that was the one disappointment in the showroom. What's worse is that the trunk lid doesn't feel or function like a premium vehicle -- it only pops open slightly, then you have to lift it, and it feels light, thin, and springy on the opening action. I would have liked to see a motorized lift back, but if not that, at least motorized boot lid....and if not THAT, at least a gas strut and hefty feeling lid! Nonetheless, it's slick AF, and I'm excited to take delivery
The problem by saying that its alone in the segment is that its not really alone. Kia EV6 is out, Hyundai Ioniq 6 is out. VW id7 is next year. Maxima EV is coming. And midsized cars are still being made. This thing is overpriced for just ride height.
I am not a big fan of cars with two colors. So no interior review with Beth? I am not a big fan of the part of the fascia on the bottom. Looks like they ran out of ideas and just put a piece of black metal or black plastic on the bottom. Crown needs to do more to make it worth it.

It’s a dead segment with the Maxima, 300, Charger, Stinger killed this year while Arteon will be killed next year
Great review, I watched this video 4 times hahah. Also you HAVE to put the car into M, cause if youre in D it wont respond to any paddle shifts
We love our new Crown Platinum.
Toyota pulled off the rare feat of combining blandness with quirkiness in same package. Almost reminiscent of late 80s French cars.

Thanks Ted, glad you liked the video!
Interesting design i wouldn't own one but glad it has a spare tire 6:37 why doesn't the passenger get the soft stuff on their side is odd
The only thing that this vehicle needs is the rear view mirror camera for better rear vision.
If this was a hatchback would be a huge seller. Why the h it’s not I don’t get it.
Looks so good

tachometer is very old tech. I would not even consider this car if it had a tachometer. very old and outdated tech
agreed, no need but I have a manual Vette as well as RAV 4 Hybrid, old and contemporary, love both
You can have a tachometer. It’s shown actually in this video. @4:30

A lot of states still use Chargers, and here in Pennsylvania lots of state troopers still run the Taurus.

I bet this thing would look dope with a lowering kit and maybe a subtle spacer.
2023 Toyota Crown Hybrid MAX Platinum Fastback Crossover Sedan!
It’s definitely interesting. Just unsure of styling for me

Bs that the top doesn’t open at all at the price point

They actually nailed it for the retired aged person looking for luxury

The Asian market trims got the power trunk. Perhaps the bean counters axed it for the US-bound cars.
Zero interest whatsoever in this car, but like to stay up on what's out there. And I can appreciate the work that goes into making these reviews 👍🏼
Thank you, I really appreciate the support!

I can't believe these new motors take 0w-8 oil.
Really? Goddamn. I would trust a Toyota and Lexus running a 0W-8 oil, but not sure about any other brand. Also, blame the CAFE standard for that
You dont need to run it. You can use 5w30.
Mine says ow-20.
The crown is an incomplete station wagon
