Alright guys I need some help. I’m planning on making a mini rotary engine for a rc car but I’m stuck on one thing. How can you make a spark without a flywheel? I feel like it’s easy but I still can’t figure it out
Encoder on the rotor, a controller to fast read the rotation of rotor and spark the plug accordingly to match timing ? Basically a fully electronic controlled injection system for your rotary
That was wild. When I saw the fuel being pushed up the fuel line at about 8:12 I was beginning to think something along the lines of "hmmmm that looks like it could be bad" but before I could finish that thought the damn tank blew up. Could have ended worse than it, clothes covered in R/C fuel, open flames present...
It's indeed a thoughy !!!! The return of compression into the tank what a mighty little bastard !!! Didn't seem to take any damage though !!! Great episode thanks a lot and the company make excellent engines !!!
@@tonydetwiler2624 Wait, who made them parts, inside the device you're commenting with? Do you realise where: smart phone, tablet, laptop, PC & gaming systems come from? Where's your tough lil engine at?? Let's see _your_ video. Thanks.
What we just witnessed was DETONATION. That's wild! not only can you see the difference in the burn rate between a normal combustion event and a detonation, you can also see that the engine wasn't rotated to the proper point for ignition. You can see the point where it missed a beat, causing a miss. Then, on the EXHAUST stroke, just before the piston hits TDC to start the intake stroke, the mixture detonates, sending that super fast flame straight out the intake valve and up the fuel line. I think you got a little lucky. I'm not sure if that glass would have survived a detonation on the compression stroke. When it detonated it was still on the exhaust stroke, so it had a relatively clear path for the expanding gasses to escape. And since the intake stroke comes next, it never had a situation where it was a confined detonation like you get on the compression stroke.
How is a really good observation and a really good explanation, you're completely right I just watched the footage again after reading your explanation and that's exactly what happened. now if that would have occurred in a different point in the stroke and the glass would have exploded, well that would have been really cool too.
@@WarpedYT High speed footage is awesome. It would've been impossible to know exactly how that detonation occurred without the great footage you took. If it detonated and shattered the glass that would've been an epic bit of footage too haha
Was the cam timing properly set after you spun the cam by hand? With it not wanting to rev and then the detonation it seems like the cam timing was off.
Are you kidding me?!! That little thing puts out about 0.5 horsepower!!! Amazing little engine. Stirlingkit has some cool stuff. I'll bet you were getting close to 1 hp out of that puppy. Cool stuff Matt!
@@WarpedYT Per stirlingkits website its Output Power is 0.5ps (pferdestarke) which converts to .493 hp. So I guess so. It sure seems high for a little 3.5 cc engine.
Wow that flame traveling through the fuel line was interesting. I survey boats for a living and one of the requirements is a "flame screen" in the fuel tank vent fitting which is normally mounted through the side of the hull. This screen prevents a flame from igniting the fumes in the vent line and traveling to the tank. It also prevents dirt dobbers from plugging the vent.
Since it survived this one. What about playing a bit with engine timing? I'm not a engine expert but maybe it's possible to achieve effect similar to two step or something. It would look nice with fire pulled to exhaust port and thru exhaust itself. Also it might sound nice.
@Sic Semper Tyrannis By changing timing, or fuel supply. You can't hold specific RPM and have max throttle without limiting combustion/power output. Learn basics... Engineering Explained has good video about two step. Go and watch it.
More pressure in the chamber than the tank xD But impressive, that it backblew enough oxygen back to the tank, while burning and beeing able to ignite it^^
Hey matt! Longtime since i made my rounds commenting and watching stuff! This was amazing! Loved it! I can just imagine that tiny engine quietly running away in someones house just stinking it up with carbon monoxide as he's running around trying to findout what the hell is making that smell n buzzy rumble 😂! Or the power goes out and that tiny thing starts up on someones window ledge! Power goes back on! Hell ya! No worry's here! I hope all is going amazing! I'm glad your still living the dream on here! 😎
As always, it is fascinating to see your video. See how combustion engine work is very interesting. It is good to know, everytime I ride my bike, I make little explosion under my seat.
Can you put some more light shining inside the cylinder, if possible, so we can see the piston and valves moving. You were speaking about rpm lagging, are you sure you got the cam timed right? You didn't show that part in reassembly..
The colours of that electrode with the oxy acetylene in was insane! What a cool little engine.... wonder how much more power it was putting out with the gas? Hmmmm
Awesome video, you should do an episode or 4 on gaseous additives like the obvious nitros oxide but also pure O2 and flammable ones like propane and butane
Nice video 👍. Can you do experiments of mini engine to see how much weight it can pull or if it can run accessories such as AC inverters, oil/water pumps!
that spark plug was glowing! I wonder if u can get it to run on propane! I knew someone that ran propane injection years ago on a 70's ford 351w engine and he told me it ran really well. might be worth a try
Awsome videos, you should look into maytag 92 engines, youd love messin with one, built like a tank and you can watch it run for hours, and its a tank of a two stroke. Maybe you can make a video of trying to blow it with nos or somethin but youd probably need c4
Can you try to make a video of either brake pads or the inside of a brake drum? But like a really really close up view or microscopic view? So we can see how the brake pads keep from touching the disk?
Maybe simulate a supercharger with compressed air plumbed and sealed to the carb. Use a regulator to keep it at measured boost levels. You would also have to pressurize the fuel tank too. See how much boost it can handle. That oxy/acetylene combo is great. The spark plug was glowing pretty bright. I thought it would melt and sputter out for sure. That's when the fuel tank blew.
Are you sure the cam is synced properly with the driveshaft? If it's off a tooth or two, that might possibly contribute to the low rpm you were seeing.
100% sure, I don't think this engine is made to run like a normal engine, it's more of a souvenir that runs which is also cool. I triple checked the valve timing and a marks on the crankshaft and camshaft... They're good I just think maybe the compression is super low in this engine
