I really love this episode because of the fact that rob was the forgotten one and Gumball could never get his name right. Now, Gumball shows he really cares for him, it's just really mindblowing to me because this character was once an obscure background character, but look at him now.

I agreed. He appeared as a background character with no sense of quality, but more of a bland feature that he was used as a device for the plot (like the episode called "The Pony" where Gumball didn't recognized him that much and spelled his name wrong). Now, he ended up becoming more and more worst.

If Nicole and Rob did meet, I don't think it will end well for Rob if she find out that he trying to destroy Gumball. I mean Rob is dangerous and all, but Nicole is a whole different beast when she's upset.

Rob just might be the best character in the series. Started as a background character, went through a well developed character arc, and now sits on top as one of the most well written characters on the show.

One thing that I always thought it was weird about Rob is that when he become a villain, he was the nemesis of both Gumball and Darwin, but after a few episode, his hatred was just on Gumball, am I really the only one who noticed this?
I guess it's just hard to hate Darwin he's pretty adorable

I see it similarly as Sideshow Bob's relationship to the Simpsons kids. He hates both Bart and Lisa, but he mostly hates Bart.

Michael Strong not really. He’s always hated Bart almost exclusively and it’s always portrayed that way. He hates the entire Simpson family, yet there’s something about Bart that makes him want to kill him to the point of obsession

That made me really want to see Carrie possess Penny, or even our other resident shapeshifter Clayton, so we can see what she would do with those powers, and the manifestation of her emotions through Penny.

I fucking love this episode.
There is something adorable about Penny wanting to help Gumball despite his self absorption.
There is something really cathartic about Gumball being so obsessed about having someone antagonize him that he literally annoys him to the point of frustration and hatred. I love a good catharsis.
Maybe because at the end when Rob beginning to say I really really really hate and begin to play I always love you or some s***
To me, what annoys me about the episode is not how self-centred gumball is but the fact that his self-centeredness was met with his demand being fulfilled (rob being back to his nemesis) rather than needing to face the consequences of it or at the very least fail to elicit discomfort to the subject of his obsession like he usually do

But Gumball wants to be hated. Banana Joe, although he hasn't been asked, probably doesn't - in fact, Joe probably doesn't even know who Rob is (the right term is "barely knows who Rob is", as Banana Joe and Rob have met, and even had the episode where Rob kidnapped his mother, but they didn't really have any proper communication there, like Gumball and Darwin had with Rob), and most likely doesn't even know that Rob hates him, and the bigger point: doesn't know Rob is trying to kill him.
Basically, even though Gumball was stubborn, he did a good thing: Gumball definitely does want to be hated by Rob, banana Joe knows little about Rob, and doesn't know Rob is trying to kill him. Gumball saved Banana Joe. Excluding Tobias, who appeared only for half a second, but his appearance satisfied the audience, it's a win:win for every character; Gumball got what he wanted, Rob still has somebody to hate, Penny was apologised to, Penny and Darwin got Gumball's attention back - Gumball getting what he want satisfies everyone involved

People HATED this episode? This is one of my favorites I loved it immediately
I feel like The Ex is worth watching simply for the break up and consoling scenes alone. The 'I just don't feel I'm ready to get back into the hating scene' leaves me in stitches every time
I agree. It's refreshing to see Rob being a lot more casual then his usual angry, angsty self. It's great to see him from a different perspective.
Did anyone else notice how the static on Rob's body intensified when he was escalating in anger? That's a neat subtle characteristic! 10:37 (pay attention to the static)

There aren't as many Rob episodes as I would like to see, but ones here, including this one, are amazing. They actually got a good story driven plot, from the beginning with Molly's disappearance to Rob escaping the void and getting revenge to them saving each other after Rob control's time and stuff with a romote to this episode where Rob decides to find a different enemy to target. I love it!
I personally find this episode hilarious, Rob is great and this is not to be debated.
It seems you never touched on, from what I can tell, the main reason why people I know dislike this episode. And that's because it wrecks everything accomplished in The Disaster/Rerun just to force Rob back into the status quo.
This makes sense. Rob has moved on, but Gumball acts with him like nothing happened...
But if that is a side effect of him rewinding things, that makes sense.

This is literally one of, if not THEE most favorite episode of mine IMO??? I just adore Rob as a character and to see him and Gumball interact like this is honestly hilarious and it's easily my top pick. Idk why anyone on earth could hate this. This is a golden episode. I love it.

3 years later and I still love this episode. And being a fan of Whiney Houston that song parody at the near end was so funny! XD
i actually really liked this episode, i think gumball’s dismissive, oblivious attitude towards penny and darwin is just satire. a joke about people’s tendency to self absorb themselves on their exes and maybe get back with them: people no one should absorb themselves in and sometimes people end up ruining good relationships they already have.
On a side question, anyone know if there’s a gumball movie? it’s so confusing i see people say there isn’t then some saying there’s a movie but there’s no confirmation or word about the show from the creator in so long.
There is no movie.... At least right now. The creator claimed that he wants to end the show with a tv movie (hence the final ep cliffhanger) and there has bern several hints to one being in production but no concrete confirmation

I don''t see why people hate this episode. Especially the ending where Rob strangles Gumball, while romantic music is played, its just a ridiculous and therefore hilarious combo.
This episode was so hilarious, it felt like they’re trying to force Darwin in the episode even though he doesn’t have to be there. Penny’s already doing his role for him. But the episode was still good.
So the episode where Gumball ignore Penny (his girlfriend) just to get back his nemesis, because having a nemesis is more important than a girlfriend.
It was a parody of relationships not meant to be taken seriously.
To be fair, he is a child. I’m pretty having a nemesis and playing hero is more important to a child than a girlfriend.

I never knew people hated this episode?? It’s one of my personal favourites from season 5, and it’s funny as hell.
I thought this was a funny episode, and I liked it at first. But it just totally undid Rob’s entire character arc.
Here’s the thing: I don’t think Gumball is valuing Rob over Penny, or even particularly values him over anyone. The reason he’s after Rob is because he can’t stand someone ignoring him, or not making him the star of the show. Rob isn’t giving him the attention he’s used to, and that’s why he’s obsessed with Rob here. He wants the attention, and can’t stand not having it from even one person. And it’s a cool contrast to how earlier in the series, Rob was the one who wanted to be friends and hang out with Gumball, but Gumball ignored him. But still, mixed feelings for this episode.

@@lilopugs7593 I highly doubt they undid his redemption. I mean he was going after Banana Jojo, so he was still a nemesis. He also got over his petty grudge of being forgotten and no longer wants to destroy the Watterson's. All he wanted to do after that was make sure everyone didn't get trapped in the void. His motives were no longer evil ,just misunderstood. Seems realistic to me. And if had had "undone character development", it didn't ruin it. People in real life don't really change like how people change on TV. Also, character regression is a thing. We as people are a creature of habit, so we can revert back to our old ways if push comes to shove. Personally, I think we as an audience really need to rethink character development as it's way too oversimplified now a days.
@@learn2draw716 bro I don't wanna start a fight, that's just my opinion. I know people are complex. I know how arcs work. Gumball isn't avatar, I don't expect them to pull a Zuko redemption. The show ended, meaning there's less opportunity to expand upon him. What I'm trying to say is that there was a lot of potential for Rob rather than turn him into a gag. I would've liked more episodes with him to show more growth rather than your typical antagonist again being right after a climatic fight
Rob is in short, a broken(broken in like the creator hasn't used him for a long time) character trying to live off his life in new Elmore, so Gumball rly needs to learn the lesson again

This is basically the "One Course Meal" of Gumball. Making the villain sympathetic and the hero a jerk, but more so.
The difference is that Mr. Krabs isn't even a main character. For Gumball, yes he's a jerk but with a golden heart.

I do not like this episode, but I do not think it is the worst. I would change a ton of things here.
1. Cut out penny. She is useless to the plot.
2. I would say have more of Rob and Gumball working together. During that part where they try to sabotage banana joe, kinda make that the plot. You could have a ton of jokes with that. Imagine Gumball gets into a fight with Bannana joe, and calls rob for help. While gumball wants to do something stupid to pay him back, rob wants to go all the way. At the end, they get into a fight and they realize they cant work together, because theyhave separate beliefs.
3. Have Darwin be more of a straitman instead of him just popping up now and then. have it like the Rerun, here he is the guy coming with.
With all that said, this not the worst.

I'm the only one who thought what at one moment Penny just says. "If you feel so bad without a nemesis, I help you find a new nemesis. And it will be me." And Gumball team up with Rob so in the end, he'd understand what he doesn't need a nemesis.

I was like: Out of all characters to hate and destroy, he picked *Banana Joe?* What did that banana ever do to someone who disappeared off the face of the Earth? This episode was pretty dumb in my opinion, also it felt like Looney Tunes with the whole trap ideal
I think he picked banana joe as forshadowing of banana barbaras psychic powers. He made joe his enemy so that he could go after his mom without interruption. Thats always how i saw it anyway
I have no opinions on this episode. I only remember this because they chose the wrong part of “I Will Always Love You” and I HAD to make a personal edit (now privated).
Personally TAWOG isn't really one of those shows where I rate episodes from best to worst, its just a show that I always love to watch no matter what. I haven't watched an episode I didn't enjoy, and I especially enjoyed this particular one.
This episode is the one that made me lol quite well. Only because the song plays after Rob says he hates Gumball. It got me dead

I personally love this episode, it’s one of my favorites.
The idea of a “backwards breakup” makes it entertaining.
Though, I can see how it annoys some people. Gumball was being his narcissistic self by wanting a villain to hate him (It’s kinda for attention, though I’m unsure how to describe it lol), which some people will understandably find it annoying.
Sometimes you need to have the right set of humor to enjoy an episode.

My two favourite episodes are “the disaster” and “the rerun” =)
I’ve always considered the first 5 seasons of Gumball really good. There are some bad episodes in those seasons, but they don’t take away the value of the seasons for me. Season 6 was pretty solid for the first half, but when it was nearing its end was when I felt that a lot of those final episodes weren’t that good.

Same. Felt like they just needed some forced way to say Richard isn't lazy despite showing that Nicole has on multiple occasion been able to handle everything on her own with little to no help from Richard (since he most of the time acts childish and tries to get out of chores). Some of the jokes were pretty good but, it made no sense to dumb down Nicole just to have Richard look like he's actually responsible--even though his methods in The Deal are reckless because of his immaturity.
Think the episode would've been better playing off the part of Nicole letting the employee of the month go to her head (from feeling unappreciated at her job for years), so much so that it forces Richard to take responsibility of everything and have to help her from being too absorbed in that mindset. In the end, both of them being able to realize how much they can appreciate each other since that's how it all started. Idk, just something better than what we got.

I FREAKING love this episode. The relationship between Rob and Gumball is so funny, especially when the Whitney Houston song plays in that one scene. Gumball trying to win Rob back from being Banana Joe's nemesis is a hilarious and well-done plot.

"The Ex" is my favorite Gumball episode of all time. I don't really understand why people don't like it. I mean, it's hilarious (I love how Gumball and Rob act the way two people breaking up would), it has Rob in it (I may or may not be simping for Rob), and I, like you said, basically, love that they portray Rob as more casually villainous instead of the way they normally show him setting up the craziest, most evil plans. I may be biased, but I think this is just a really good episode.

I seriously don't get why people would even so much as dislike The Ex. It is literally one of my top favorite episodes of the whole series. It always gives me a good laugh.
