That's why people in Asia look at owning an elephant as a status symbol, as a symbol of wealth, as if the elephant were a Ferrari. Looking at animals as commodities, rather than the sentient beings that they are, makes life hell for the animal. Elephants have suffered a great deal, they've been torture-trained in captivity. It kills up to half of all captive Asian elephant calves. While I realize this is not people's preferred forum for educating about elephants, elephants will soon be extinct (both African elephants and Asian elephants) in both the wild and in captivity, because Man's violence kills elephants faster than they can reproduce. The elephant in this episode was named "Modoc", and was made/forced to perform in circuses in earlier life, and on TV in the 1960's and 1970's. At the time this episode was filmed, she was 68 years old.
