  • Fresh from his victory over the jigging ninja, Mick slides back into the tackle shop to pull apart a few reels and explain the difference between "overhead" and "spinning". He also offers a few choice maintenance tips for keeping your reel as smooth as a slimy mackerel in a spa bath.

One downside I’ve found with overheads that use a line level wind is that if you wind the line back thru the guide onto the spool and then wind the spool (as the guy does at the end of the video), you end up with a mismatch of where the line ison the spool compared to where the level wind guide is (lol, makes more sense in my head 😂). Ie the next time you use it you end up with the line on the spool being all the way to one side and the level wind guide all the way at the other side. It’s a bastard to try line them up too 😂😂😂

Does turning into the line guide is roughly where you left the line and then free unspooling to you get the loose end work?

@@anthmania Hehehe. Yeah, in theory it does. But it’s not as easy. The winder goes in a different direction to what you expect once you click it into gear. I guess you could set it to do reverse of what you expect and you should have success. But I’ve found it UBER frustrating on more than one occasion 😂

Don't grease your drag? It's been found that greasing your drag washers gives you more range and a stronger drag at the top end. Also it's true that you don't need to over grease everything but when I do my own maintenance I like to paint a thin layer over literally every surface on the inside of the reel because that's what water proofs it. If you end up dunking your reel, you will most definitely get some water down the main shaft but it's going to do absolutely nothing (given you strip the reel down as soon as possible)

Alvey reels are much better in harsh conditions and require next to no maintenance.
