  • This is hands down the MOST POWERFUL speech that talks about the struggles, identity and aspirations of the Jewish People. Herbert Pagani's poem written in 1976 couldn't be more relevant today.
This is a MUST watch for all.

Lets take a glimpse at how misguided the content of this speech is: The laws that guarantee humane treatment of laborers including paid benefits and holidays are clearly out-lined in Jewish law where as on Shabbos, we are not even allowed make our animals work, let alone our non-Jewish slaves (whom we are not allowed to free so what was he saying about Judaism being against slavery?) and on the 7th year we are not allowed to make our land work (yes, you heard that right, our rocks and trees have to keep Shabbos). Judaism is not against slavery, Please explain to me what does 'ama ha'ivria' means? Its a little Jewish girl that is legally sold to slavery by her father for no crime of her own, only because her father is poor. It would be more accurate to say that Judaism has such a deep respect for human life that if the world would follow Judaism then slavery would NOT have to be abolished because the laws of slavery, in Judaism, guarantee certain basic rights to all slaves, that most American citizens do not enjoy. Where would America be today if slave masters had treated their slaves differently? Why can't slaves have schools? Why can't slaves have comfortable lives? Most legal, paid jobs satisfy the Jewish definition of slavery. That is why I wrote and delivered a lecture on the legality of 'working' a salaried position as an observant Jew in one of the oldest and most respected Yeshivos in the world (its fine btw, we are allowed to work - maybe). I could likewise prove to you that Judaism is ideologically sexist and racist followed by proving you that Judaism requires utmost respect for the same people that it discriminates against. I could just as easily prove to you that Nazi Fascism is the only way to describe what the Jews did to conquer the land of Israel - we literally exterminated 7 nations, and by the same token, that in that same ideology lies the greatest care and concern for peace and mutual prosperity. I consider my self to be a non Zionist Jew bordering on anti-Zionist (though some would opine that I am extremely Zionist) and my respect for Judaism is absolute, but to conflate things that some misguided secular Jews have done with totally misunderstood artifacts of Judaism, i.e. Freund vs. resting on the 7th day, is absolute ignorance beyond proportion in my mind.

The rules of eved canani is only referred to the people of canan which we had a particular relationship with.
Our rules on jew slaves should be the ones regarding all other people.
Herbert when he spoke about Freud and all other personalities was referring to the fact that because they where jews and so non linked to any land they where living in, they were not in the society like others were for this reason they have dove their revolutionary works. There is no link to shabbat in any way.

@@Hhgguhhjhvg "The rules of eved canani is only referred to the people of canan which we had a particular relationship with. " - source? "Our rules on jew slaves should be the ones regarding all other people." so its ok for parents to sell their underage girls to slavery for their own monetary benefit? have you ever heard a an 'ama ha'ivria'? how about forcing a 12 year old girl into marriage? does the word 'naarah hameorasah' mean anything to you? "when he spoke about Freud and all other personalities was referring to the fact that because they where Jews and so non linked to any land they where living in, they were not in the society like others were" Perhaps, but a German Jew not linked to Germany? You have to brush up on German Jewish history. Jews were so comfortable in Germany that an entire movement was formed (in part) to remove the return to the Land of Israel from the Jewish religion. It called reform. Jews in Germany were so completely German that any part of Judaism that set them aside from Germans was perceived as an obstacle and needed to be changed. Anyway, I used the word conflate which means to combine. He combined his false concept of Shabbos, which he credits with being an intellectual precursor to modern day labor laws and ethics (totally untrue) to Freud, who's thoughts, writings, and practices were a precursor to modern day psychology.

I think we can agree, that if someone like Hitler ym"sh would capture the land of Israel it would be better if he would call it Germany than if he would call it Israel, wouldn't you say? So its a question of narrative. Who is the state of Israel. An imposter using Jewish symbols, history, and culture to defraud the Jewish people of their heritage or something more like what I think you credit it with. I honestly came to Israel on a one way ticket with every intention to join the army only I checked into a Yeshiva to learn some Hebrew first(Aish Hatorah). That was my first exposure to Talmud Bavli. I was too intrigued to continue. I stayed there for 4 years and then moved on to a more advanced place, Yeshivas Mir, for another 11 years. I cannot see, from what I know now, how anyone who knows anything can liken the state of Israel to anything but fraud. I credit Rudy with his fact checking the anti Israel/Jewish bias. But to go so far as to say supporting Israel equates to reviving our old civilization. Respectfully, it upsets me just to heard such words. Just imagine Nazi's being credited with reviving the old Jewish civilization, how that could make someone feel. You may not look at it the same way but again, its a question of narrative.

Herbert Pagani (1976) - "Pleading for my Land"
The other day I was in the subway and heard two ladies say: "Did you read the news again? These Jews with their stories? What jerks!" It's true. We are jerks. For centuries we've been annoying the world. It's in our nature. What can you do? Abraham with his "One god", Moses with his 10 commandments, Jesus with his other cheek always ready for a second slap, then Freud, Marx, Einstein, all were intruders, revolutionaries, enemies of the order. Why? Because no order, whatever the century, would not satisfy them since they were orders Jews were always excluded from. To call everything in question, to see further, changing the world to change its destiny. Such was the destiny of my ancestors. This is why they were hated by all defenders of established orders. The Right's anti-Semitism blames the Jews for having executed the Bolshevik revolution. It's true, there were many of them in 1917. The left's anti-Semitism blames the Jews for being the giants of Capitalism. It's true, there are many Jewish capitalists. The reason is simple: Religion, culture, and revolutionary ideas on one side, and stocks & banks on the other are the only portable goods, the only property available for those who don't have a country. And now that they have a country, anti-Semitism re-emerges from its ashes. Sorry! From OUR ashes. It's called anti-Zionism. It used to be applied only to individuals, now it's applied to a Nation. Israel has become a ghetto - Jerusalem is Warsaw. Many of today's Nazis besiege us in Arabic and if their crescent is sometimes disguised in a sickle, it's only for better trapping the liberal leftists of the world. I, who am a Jew of the Left, I reject a Left that only cares about the liberation of some at the expense of others because I am precise of those others. I support class struggles, but I also support the right to be different. If the Left wants to count me with its members, it cannot exclude my problems. And my problem is simple. My problem exists since the Roman deportations of the 1st century after Jesus Christ. Everywhere we went we were expelled, dishonored, banished, tracked, denounced, crushed, burned and converted by force. Why? Because our religion, our culture, was dangerous. It was an example for democracy. Some examples? Judaism was the first to create the Sabbath, the day of the weekly mandatory rest. You imagine the joy of the Pharaohs, always late in building the next pyramid. Judaism prohibits slavery. You can imagine the sympathy of the Romans, antiquity's most significant wholesalers of free labor. It is said in the Bible: "Earth does not belong to man, but to God". From this a law was created, the automatic return of real-estate every 49 years. Every 49 years... You can imagine the effect of such a law on the Popes of the Middle Ages and the builders of empires during the Renaissance. It was imperative that the people not learn the truth. They started by banishing the Bible. Then there were libels. Walls of defamation that became the walls of defamation that became the walls of ghettos. Then the Inquisition, the flames, and later the yellow stars. Auschwitz is only an industrial example of genocide, but there were thousands of genocides. It would take me three days only to name all the pogroms of Spain, Russia, Poland & North Africa. Due to continuously having to flee and move, the Jew went everywhere. One extrapolates: Jews are from nowhere. I am effectively from nowhere. We are among the people like a child on welfare. I don't want to be adopted anymore. I no longer want my life to depend on the mood of my landlords. I no longer want to be a "citizen-rentner" I've had enough of knocking at History's doors and waiting until I'm told to "enter". I'm entering and I shout! I am at home on Earth and on Earth I have my Land. It has been promised to me, and this promise will be kept. What is Zionism? It can be reduced to a simple sentence: "Next year in Jerusalem." No, it's not the slogan from Club Med. It's written in the Bible. The best-selling and the most wrongly read book in the world. And this prayer became a roar, a roar that is over 2,000-years-old. And the fathers of Columbus, Kafka, Proust, Chagall, Marx, Einstein, and even Mr. Kissinger, repeated this roar, at least once a year, on Passover. Then, is Zionism equal to racism? Don't make me laugh! Is "Sweet France, dear country of my childhood" a racist anthem? Zionism is the name of a struggle for freedom! In the world, everybody had their Jews. The French have theirs: They are the Breton, Occitans, and the immigrant workers. The Italians have Sicilians; Americans have their Blacks; the Spanish their Basques. We? We are EVERYONE'S Jews. To those that tell me: "And the Palestinians?", I answer: "I am a 2.000-year-old Palestinian. I am the oldest oppressed man in the world." Oppressed and often suppressed. I will negotiate with them, but I will not yield my place. And the political options of a government never called into question the existence of a Nation. Then why Israel? When Israeli will be out of danger I will choose among Jews and my Arab neighbors, those who are my brothers of ideas. Today, I must be united with my People, even those whom I hate. In the name of this insurmountable enemy: Racism. Descartes was wrong: "I think, therefore I am" doesn't mean anything. We have been thinking for 5000 years, and we still don't exist. I defend myself, therefore I am!

@@chaimoberman752 There is only one world, and only one race of humans left upon it.
There used to be more, Neanderthal, Denison, etc. They are all gone now. It's just us. And even our species came very close to extinction several times. Some by our own hand.
You'd think that would mean something to us.
That is would make us all realize how small and precious this world and all of us are.
Yet we have fought over imaginary divisions from the beginning of our species.
You talk about which people have a nation and which do not.. but the nations are based on imaginary lines in the sand that sperate "us" from "them".
Until we learn to look beyond the constructs of our own imaginings, I worry that long term peace will forever be elusive to us all, and that the most vulnerable among us will always face the kinds of oppression so eloquently stated in this video.
We are all citizens of this world. And that includes both Jewish and Palestinian people.
Your mother's GPS coordinates at the time of your birth should not determine your value as a human being. We all know that right now it does. But isn't it past time that it didn't?
It doesn't matter if you are Christian or not, but treating your neighbor like your brother has *always* been good advice.. and we are *all* neighbors.
We are all brothers (and sisters).
We are just too wrapped up in the mindset we are taught from the moment we are born to see beyond it.
When you realize we are all family, then the core of the social rules we have been inventing and reinventing on how to treat people begin to make more sense.
Think of what a family is *supposed* to be like, whether you are from such a family or not.
Would such a family display greed towards one another? No.
      Charity makes sense.
Treating one another with kindness makes sense.
Firm but fair and considerate rules make sense in any household.
None of us would deny a hungry son or daughter food, or clothing, or medicine, or a safe place to sleep..
I'm a parent. I can tell you that squabbles will happen whenever you are truly close to one another, but the bond that binds you together goes much deeper than petty arguments so you learn to speak things out and listen..
We hurt when our loved ones hurt, especially if we can't easily fix the problems they face. At least we want to help. At least we try to see people through their hardships, even if they have made dumb choices.
Love has never been blind. The blind mistake it's endurance and gentleness for blindness and frailty. For vulnerability. It isn't. It never has been.
Love *is* our greatest and strongest gift.
      We are one family.
So hello there. I hope this day is treating you kindly from your side of the screen.. thank you for reading my rant..
I hope you have the kind of evening of peace and quiet I am intending to have with my husband and kids,.. whether either of our evenings will pan out that way or not xD

This is from 1976 when I was only 3 yo yet it resonates as though no time has passed. Why do I say this? Because my sons do not feel comfortable wearing their kippot publicly after they both experienced incidents involving kids at their school trying to pull it off and/or making anti-semitic remarks. And no this is not happening in my birth country of Iran, a place my family escaped during the Iranian Revolution. This is happening in the heart of Los Angeles. Imagine in the 2020's, in the 'most democratic nation' in the world, and in one of the most diverse cities with a rich Jewish history, having to give a talk to elementary school classes on what a jew is (and isn't) and what a kippa is. (My kids were in Jewish Day School previously but we moved them to public school to give them greater exposure to what is out there, and they sure got it. As a result of what they experienced, we started giving talks at their public school every year during Hannukah (historical discussion--the kids learn the dreidel game and they all get a dreidel).
