Roy Tarpley was the top player on the '88 Mavericks team that took the eventual champion Lakers team to game 7 of the Western Conference Finals. He was part Chris Bosh, part Andre Drummond part Tony Montana. It was the later part that would do him in.
A cocaine vaccum cleaner he was well on his way to being a hall of fame level dominant big. His being busted the year after where Dallas had the league's best record 20 something games in was the catalyst that sparked their downfall which spiraled down to becoming the worst 1990's North American sports franchise.
No team lost worse then the Mavs. And it started with Tarpley. For instance, it was to replace his presence that the Mavs almost immediately traded their then dissapointing back up SF Detlef Schrempf for Herb Williams. A future star player dealt for a very mediocre PF/C.
What did we all learn from this video?

I hadn't heard of Tarpley, but am saddened by his story (particularly how he was such a good player and his career being cut short by cocaine). It's amazing how he outrebounded Barkley and Rodman. I read that he died in 2015 (your video inspired me to look up more information about him) and he died young too. :(
I heard of Shawn Kemp. I remember Kemp and Payton and they were amazing.
Haha fun way to ask people to subscribe. I heard about Kemp's downfall also. I was a kid when his career downfall began, so I don't remember much, but I do remember how things worsened for him (sad how cocaine destroyed his career also). I didn't hear about the drive-by though.
I was too young to see Bias play, but had learned about his story and am saddened by his story also. He had incredible potential and was so talented. I agree. Bird and Bias would've won titles together. It would've been great to see them take on the Bulls. Heartbreaking how he died so young.
I agree - cocaine ruins lives and the examples you gave make that clear.
I'm interested in reading up and learning more NBA history. Which resources did you use to learn about Tarpley, Bias, and Kemp? Take care, Roti.

Hi Alex, thank you for your comments and interactions.
I got a lot of my history and knowledge from youtube reccomendations honestly, hahaha.
I would look at Mike Korzemba (early stuff), Jxmy highroller, Basketball news, Secretbase, jimmerRange and Andy hoops. They are all great channels to go on a binge. If you want something analytical and play breakdowns Thinking basketball is top tier, I like alex hoops and although there isn't much footage linked to the videos jj reddicks podcast is really good.
For news sources, the ringer, the athletic, ESPN and bleacher report is what I use.
Also NBA reddit is really good.
      Anyone else want to add?
