If only 14% of people play basketball in the UK once a week, there lies the problem. How many of those 14% who play basketball in the UK once a week are any good? Furthermore " soccer " football takes most of the talent pool when it comes to athletics. Basketball is a niche sport in the UK and organisations feel if they want basketball, leave it to the Americans. I can see both sides of the coin.

Im someone who played for GB in my youth and went over to play in America. The biggest issue is funding as well as lack of interest. People in Britain are so transfixed on football and their clubs they could care less about any other sport, even Rugby & Cricket they pay no mind to. I genuinely thing it British Basketball wants to succeed, they need to be a branch of a football club like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Olympiacos, Red Star, etc. Ive seen more people go to MEN Arena for a City v United/Liverpool/Everton indoor football match than a Manchester Giants game. I think if City got a BBall team at the new Coop arena and a United BBall team played at the MEN or National Basketball Centre there would be thousands of people showing up to watch it which could then get the traction the sport needs to truly take off. Once that happens, more funding can be given to basketball which would lead games being broadcasted on Sky in primetime, leading to more fans, more interest, more players, more development, more money.. and ultimately more international success. We love our country and we love basketball but the BBL pays less or equal to standard UK jobs and pays barely anything compares to clubs in the EuroLeague, Australia, and especially in the USA.. and all those teams have a direct way to make it big.. Australia & Europe have lower leagues where you can play for a Barcelona B or a Bayern Munich B.. and American you go from college to pro.. Britain just doesnt have that, if the BBL has barely any eyeballs than the NBL has absolute 0. I love GB Basketball and Ill live my country and sport until I die but there needs to be major changes in the structure before any serious progress can be made or seen

As a kid i loved basketball i was good at it as well but i didnt know anyone that liked it. all of my friends loved football i didnt the only time i could ever play basketball was in pe at school. id go to the court and just shoot hoops on my own when i got in my teens i just stopped playing. You also never hear about basketball anywhere unless your looking for it. Football and cricket dominates sport in the uk.
