The first time that I saw Refused was on the '96 tour with Snapcase. It was in a terrible space outside of Reno, NV called Heritage Hall. The place had 7 foot ceiling and they built a stage that was maybe 2 inches high. Refused and Snapcase both played amazing sets regardless of the space. Everyone in Refused was kind and approachable. Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent is one of my all-time favorite hardcore albums due to the memories of that show. The next time that I saw Refused was at the Warfield in San Francisco on the reunion tour in 2012. Two amazing shows that will always be a part of my fondest memories.

I grew up living with my uncle and grandma. My uncle was maybe 24 or something at the time and was a hardcore guy. I used to dig through his tapes, records, and cds. I found scratch the surface in his room. Changed my tastes. I must have been like 10. My uncle also gave me the shape of punk to come as a Christmas gift. I didn’t understand what I was hearing but I liked it. Fast forward to me at 36 years old and I still love those records so much.

Personally I'm overwhelmed by doing such lists since it's such a rabbit hole. Like you said, in the 90s there was so much different stuff going on simultaneously (yep, back then it was a lot "everyone hating each other" haha).
Just a few personal faves of mine that fit here: Yuppicide, His hero is gone, Rorschach, Boysetsfire, Shai Hulud...
And, altough they go much further than that small Hardcore-scene bubble, I'd definitely mention Fugazi, no matter what:- )

Great list, all familiar and dear albums to me except Statue and ManLiftingBanner, which are the deep cuts I need to check out. Loved hearing your thoughts Dennis. Also loved seeing you with Refused in Helsinki a few years ago.
    Here is my current list:
    1. Refused - Everlasting (1995)
    2. Bloodlet - Entheogen (1996)
    3. Breach - It's Me God (1997)
    4. Integrity - Systems Overload (1995)
    5. 108 - Threefold Misery (1996)
    6. Inner Dam - The Day Everything Meant Nothing (1997)
    7. All Out War - Truth in the Age of Lies (1997)
    8. Catharsis - Samsara (1997)
    9. Damnation A.D. - No More Dreams of Happy Endings (1995)
    10. Turmoil - From Bleeding Hands (1996)
Shape of Punk and Songs to Fan the Flames should be on the list, but I wanted to have one album per band. Feels weird leaving Snapcase and Earth Crisis out, but I could not squeeze them in.

I was at the show in the P-Werk Blieskastel (which was a great place for HC shows in the 90s) with you and Ink and Dagger, and I remember how I first saw those guys with all that make-up and stuff. I really could not relate to it, so I never paid further attention to them. Think I‘m gonna check out that record now 25 years later.

I’m not a fan of tough guy hardcore. I disagree with every album except for Ink and Dagger and Born Against (perhaps the best hardcore band ever, imo). Missing is Feel the Darkness (egregiously so), Frodus Conglomerate International, Refused - Shape ( for obvious reasons not included), The Word as Law, at least one Botch Record, at least on Converge record, the Propagandhi/I Spy split (not hardcore? You’re wrong), Dystopia, Damnation AD. What is hardcore anyway? The bands he passed on (Heroin, Moss Icon, etc were way batter than Integrity or Sick of it All ever were). Thank god The Shape of Punk was so amazing that he gets a pass! 😂

That’s the beauty of music. We don’t have to agree.
And I wouldn’t say that my list was tough guy hardcore.
I also wanted to make a list of the “scene” that we were a part of.
And I agree; that while scremo, noisy, scene was pretty amazing.
And yes, shape is a pretty good album. 😀

It’s interesting how people have had very different experiences and influences from this period. I didn’t like any of these bands haha. I definitely appreciate the musicianship of snapcase and how different they sounded but just could never get on with the vocals. A few I think still sound great today would be: Earth Crisis-Gomorrah’s season ends, CIV-set your goals, Turmoil-the process of, 411- this isn’t me, Battery-until the end. Obviously a lot of my influences come from Vegan Straight edge bands and musicians. Proudly still XVX and about to turn 50.

Waw man, that’s some obscure stuff ! For me, it’s the obvious bands, Battery, Crivits, The Spudmonsters (No Guarantees), 59 times the pain (sweden!), Ringworm, and of course i cannot leave Pro-pain “The truth hurts” and all the Biohazard stuff unmentioned. Also check out Hard Resistance from Belgium and Violation Of Trust from the Netherlands! Looking through my collection, i’m surprised how few 90s hardcore i have. I got that “Hold your ground” compilation and almost all the bands i liked are 80s bands. I’m more the punk hardcore kinda guy. Ink and Dagger’s Fine Art of Original Sin is the American Shape of Punk to Come (in many more ways than one).
I literally laughed out loud when he picked Scratch the Surface as one of the top 10 hardcore records of the 90s!
Lookingglassself is better than Progression through Unlearning.
    That Breach record is great.
Humanity is the Devil is much better than Systems Overload.
I don’t understand why the Statue record qualifies, but No Spiritual Surrender doesn’t? (I also don’t understand how the Statue record is even a top 50 90s hardcore record…)
