I've jumped off there many times. You have to know the time of year to do it. Usually June-September is good. As the year hits November, the waves, current, and tides are very unpredictable and even good swimmers can have a rough go at it. Always have a Swim-buddy or don't go.
I recommended it, but think I’m going to un-recommend. I never saw it as difficult, just super fun. But I suppose I took for granted my ability to read the water and being a strong ocean 🌊 swimmer. 🏊♂️ I never realized there were so many accidents.
A big sign that reads "Tourists that swim here will drown" should be posted. I'm not making a joke, that spot is dangerous. For decades Ive seen more tourists almost drown at Portlock compared to any other place. I hope the young man has a 100% recovery.
They could well have been born and raised here. Maybe went Koko Head - Niu Valley - Kaiser. Could have been surfing there and playing there from little kid times. Or ... maybe not. You can't really tell from a few minutes on a video.
Yet you take Andy Bumatai - Filipino/German born in Germany - and Oh yeah, he's local, he's one of us! Those guys who were interviewed might be "local" as far as born and raised there, went to all their school there, and played and when they got older, surfed, along that coast all their lives. You just don't know. Or they could have come from California a year ago. I think the more important thing here is, China Walls is pretty dangerous and people who don't really know what they're doing should not go there.
People will always go to places they shouldn't for safety's sake. We have similar problems on the Great Lakes. People think "it's a lake" how dangerous can it be? Kayakers especially do not understand the currents and large waves on the lake. There are also undertows. More signage may get people to rethink about swimming at China Walls. 🏊♀🚫🏊♀
It doesn’t, that’s the freaking point. There are MULTIPLE state and locally drawn warning signs in the entrance of this area. Tourists should research and be aware of the location they are entering. No map warning what so ever- just a 15’ drop advertising to the masses. Most of which are not avid swimmers, esp not experienced enough for china walls. This is entirely gogo and likewise tourism directories, they should not be directing tourists to this area. Also, common journalism on this topic, happens are at least every other week.
Mahalo to the surfers out there for helping these folks live to hopefully make better life decisions tomorrow.
I hope the young man gets better soon and recovers well.
china walls should not be a destination for tourists
- I agree
I hope he recovers 😥

So you’re implying that no white people have been born and raised on Oahu? Give me a break 🙄

@@GreenWitch1 Local has a different meaning to native Hawaiians because of how we overthrew the government and displaced the natives.
