    Great video, so fun to watch this, and the music is such a welcome change compared to the other videos you see on RUclips with those annoying EDM mixes blasting away in the background. I just bought an HP spectre x360 for working in Blender and other graphic apps, it's cool to see you did all this on a laptop. That got me excited to know that we have enough power in laptops to do these kinds of thing. I'm sure 10x the particles here though and you could be rendering for days. Great job and a sub.

    • @BlenderRookie
      @BlenderRookie  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks. Yeah, I try to somewhat match the music to the video and I almost always turn the volume down on the music so that it sounds like it's in the background. I have seen far too many good videos ruined by loud in your face music that doesn't fit.
      Yeah, all of this was rendered on my HP Envy laptop. Let me make a suggestion when it comes to doing this stuff on laptops. Be patient and install a freeware like "CoreTemp" so that you can monitor the temp of the CPU and then set the CPU clock frequency to a point where the temp will not go over 80c. "Intel Extreme Tuning Utility" can be used to change the clock frequency. I say all that because although 80c is still relatively safe, 100c can ruin the CPU and my laptop will run in the 90s if I don't turn down the clock speed. That's a little close for my comfort. I'd rather underclock a bit while rendering and be assured that my CPU survives.
      BTW, I looked up the benchmarks on that i7 6500u that's typically in the spectra and it has a 4427 Passmark score. That's not bad. Just be patient. You will run out of memory before you run out of CPU. BTW, my laptop has 8GB of memory just like the spectra. So theoretically, you should be able to do the same number of particles.
      I got luck when I found my laptop. I found it on sale 2 years ago for $550 and it has a i7 4720hq CPU.

    • @BlenderRookie
      @BlenderRookie  5 лет назад +1

      I was able to get the molecular script to work on the installed version 2.79b. But only if I don't have flip fluids installed. Apparently there is some sort of conflict with the molecular script and flip fluids. My only solution that I know of is for me to keep flip uninstalled unless I need it. The molecular script doesn't seem to interfere with flip though. It's weird.

      There is an addon called "molecular script" that you can download from here. pyroevil.com/molecular-script-download/
      Once you install it, its settings will be in the particle system panel. In the molecular script setting you can set the particles to be connected.
      But as far as creating the array, it's not like how it's done with rigid bodies. It's done with the particle system. Here's a tutorial made by the creator of that addon. ruclips.net/video/VPE5sxr2t58/видео.html

    • @lukepritchard7832
      @lukepritchard7832 6 лет назад

      Holy cow thank you for responding so quickly
      I have the molecular script. I should have clarified that.
      I can make a 50 x 50 square that will stick together. When I try and make the rectangle the particles are spread out length wise much further.
      The only way i could do it is making an array of those Molecular cubes. however they keep falling.
      I will check out his tutorials for sure.
      Thank you.

    • @BlenderRookie
      @BlenderRookie  6 лет назад +1

      You are welcome. I try to respond to everyone.
      That's why once you create the rectangle you need to "apply the scale" by pushing CTRL+A and choose scale. Do that everytime you change the size of a molecular script emitter object. Once you do that reenter the grid resolution in the particle system and they will be spaced evenly.

    • @lukepritchard7832
      @lukepritchard7832 6 лет назад

      What were the settings of your rectangle. how did you make it so the cube absorb the impact of the emitter.

    • @BlenderRookie
      @BlenderRookie  6 лет назад +1

      The particles being shot at the cube must also be molecular script and the two check boxes(activate self collision & collision with others) must be checked on both the cube and the gun.

    • @BlenderRookie

      That;s made with Blender and the molecular plus addon. The molecular plus allows you to create particles that are sort of glued together but can be broken apart. You have the make the knife a collision object. You also need to make the links between the particles kinda short and use more substeps so that the links are tight.

    Is there a way to do this for non-spherical objects? When I do it with non-spherical objects, they behave like spheres with an invisible sphere shaped collision margin around them.

    • @BlenderRookie
      @BlenderRookie  7 лет назад +5

      If you use the particle system I think they all act like spherical objects. However, if you do it with rigid body physics and set the physics to treat them like a mesh, it will react according to the shape of the objects. However, it will use far more computer power. In my case, if I were to do something like this with the rigid body system, I'd be limited to only about 20,000 objects before my computer ran out of resources. Whereas most of these simulations have 100,000 plus particles.

      I just eyeballed the alignment and cut the texture out of a single video frame and then applied it to the door. I just used the default flat texturing and the texture coordinate node. 15:18 you have 64000 particles in that tower, seems a lot. Is that volume with grid particles setting? If I try with a grid with resolution 20 or more it become so slow to move around in blender. Blender 2.81 on hi-end PC.

    • @BlenderRookie
      @BlenderRookie  4 года назад +1

      I have used 150 grid resolution with volume before and it gets a little laggy. But even with a very weak computer, 20 grid should be no problem. If you have a good system and 20 is slow, then you have some sort of issue causing problems. My first guess would be that your particles are too big and are being created while intersecting each other.

    What I dislike about sims is how slow they are. Looks like the moon landing...

    • @BlenderRookie
      @BlenderRookie  7 лет назад +1

      There is a reason for it. They actually aren't slow. They are actually so big that the large scale makes them look slow. For example, the clip where the ball is smashing through the cube, the ball is 25 meters in diameter. The reason most simulations are simulated on such a large scale is because physics based computer simulations are just past their infancy and into the toddler stage of development. Basically programs like Blender still need years more development before they can accurately simulate physics on a real life scale in an accurate way.

    • @olfmombach260

      Blender Rookie
      Good explanation. You can actually see this if you turn on the units in Blender.
      Another question: How did you make the stream of accelerated particles at 14:55?

    • @BlenderRookie
      @BlenderRookie  7 лет назад

      Olf Mombach, that gatling gun simulation is made entirely with the particle system with the molecular script addon. When I set the number of subframes(I think was 25) I then set the particle emitter that represented the gun to a number that would emit 1 particle per a sub frame.
      So basically the idea was this. If I wanted the gun to fire for 100 frames and each frame had 25 subframes, then I would tell that emitter to produce 2500 particles over 100 frames. That means there's nearly a constant stream of particles that resemble a super fast fire rate. I set the starting velocity of the particles to I think as high as it would go. I also added motion blur to it.

    But i dont get this point, what the practical use for 3D artists to use the spheres instead of real water, so as far as i understand the final long term goal of this addon will be to create realistic fluids and substances like sand,snow ... Hopefully not the spheres? Everywhere those spheres whenever i am watching Blender fluid simulations, why.? Or maybe you cannnot scale them down 100 times so it will look like a water because of the resources its needed and long render times?

    • @BlenderRookie
      @BlenderRookie  7 лет назад +1

      The particle system set to the "fluid" setting is used to simulate fluid and yes, in those simulations the particle size is really tiny. However, the molecular script isn't meant to simulate fluids. But instead to simulate physical particles like you said, sand or snow. However, most people, me included, generally don't have a powerful enough computer to simulate the crazy large number of particles needed for sand or snow. So, we do stuff like what you see in this video. Basically thousands of balls or BBs.

      Size deflect on, molecular script on, friction setting in molecular script about 0.05 and dampening to about 0.75, probably around 19 substeps. The rest are the default other than maybe particle size.

    how did you do the emission in the middle of the cube at 2:54

    • @BlenderRookie
      @BlenderRookie  6 лет назад

      I had multiple cube emitters and instead of filling the volume with particles, I filled the faces. Each emitter cube had a smaller cube inside. Each emitter cube produced a different color particle. The innermost cubes produced particles with an emission shader. Each emitter cube created its own layer of the final particle cube.
      I hope that makes sense.

    • @kendarr
      @kendarr 7 лет назад

      It indeed its an awesome CPU, but nothing beats a GPU for 3D rendering times, for instance, on my machine i have a FX 6300 its kinda like a medium I5, and something that takes 1 minute on my GTX 660, takes like 5-7 on my CPU. Also you said down there that it look about 2-8 minutes per frame, how many frames are there? ahaha

    • @BlenderRookie
      @BlenderRookie  7 лет назад +2

      I agree. GPUs rule. I wish I had one....
      My typical animation is 300 - 900 frames. But my longest one was like 7200 frames. But, when I'm not doing particle fluids or have really huge bake files, I will use Sheep It to help with the rendering. That's a free render farm.
