Hair Metal's Last Year On Top... And What A Year It Was!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 июн 2024
- In this episode, Bryan from the Hair Band Basement and I discuss Hair Metal in 1990. Yes, it was Hair Metal's last year of dominating rock scene... but what a year it was! Come along for the ride!
Finally! Someone mentions Baton Rouge. What a great debut. Follow up was solid. They worked with Jack Ponti who as co-wrote with Babylon AD and Alice Cooper on “Hey Stoopid”. One of the best songwriters of the era.
Man, I've really gotten into Baton Rouge in the last year and a half--I missed out for a long time. Great band!
they were pretty DESPERATE because both bands recorded DESPERATE lol
So cool you mentioned Trouble Tribe. I really just got into them years after the hair metal scene. Such good hair guitar rock. HERE COMES TROUBLE. WITH A CAPITAL “T”!!!
Just started listening to them over the last couple of months--I think because people suggested it in the comments of one of my videos--good shit!
TBH I like hearing about the more obscure/forgotten bands of the era. We all know the real big bands like you said. Even with the big bands, the lists were great. Entertaining show as always. 🍻
I'm with you man, I love talking about the obscure as well... so I try to get a mixture. Hey, thanks a lot for the support, man, I really appreciate it.
1990 was my first year of following music I found myself and not my Dads 70s hard rock. On cassette and vinyl I got pyromania, cherry pie, under tooth and nail, metallica and justice for all, slayer he'll awaits. I could go on for hours. I was 9 years old in 1990. I was jamming the tunes on my stereo and playing my Nintendo. Good times before I had the worries the would beset me 5 short years later. Great video as usual. I actually haven't heard of some of these bands. That's one reason I appreciate this channel, I get at least one new band to check out. I picked up the Tuff debut on vinyl at a little shop in Brooklyn.
1990 was my year too. First album I bought was Whitesnake 87. Then I just went down the line of current bands with new albums.
Hey, man, thank you for sharing that. And for always supporting this stuff. Believe me, I appreciate you.
New here! Been on a hairmetal fix for 5 years now. I'm 41 so I lived through it but I was too young to understand. Anyway, I've been going through the years starting with Crüe, Ratt, Dokken, early Great White and developed an ear and a taste for it through these acts. Sadly I'm approaching the end of the discovery part of my journey... or so I thought! Late 80s early 90s had some really great bands! A lot of them only having one album but absolutely killing it! Just grabbed Trouble Tribe, Dirty Rhythm, McQueen Street, Hericane Alice and I'm totally digging it. I'm gonna go through your years videos backwards and see if I can find anything I've missed. Just settling down to 1990 right now!
So good to hear your take on Firehouse, Guru. My band got to open for Firehouse at a small (but iconic) club in Poughkeepsie, NY in the mid 90’s. Not only were they incredible live but at the end of the show they set up a table to meet and sign for everyone who wanted it. Even more mind blowing, they set up a second table right next to them and insisted my band join them. I was a new father and had left as soon as their set was done but I get to hear stories from my drummer and bass player to this day.
Wow, that's an awesome story, Craig, thanks for sharing. Yeah, I always appreciate the bands who go that extra step for their fans, and Firehouse definitely did that.
(*It's not hair metal*) But "Rust In Peace" from Megadeth was a very powerful album from 1990.
That’s a thrash masterpiece!
My favorite album from1990 was thrash metal as well. Testament's Souls of black came out in 1990. Killer record.
Still have the same copy I bought the week it released! A lifetime classic!
@@ciaranmeeks9431 Yup "Rust In Peace" checks all boxes...Height of the Big 4 thrash bands Golden Years...The album has the Most talented and successful Megadeth band line-up...It's Produced By Mike Clink, still hot from producing GnR's "Appetite For Destruction"...And the Album had great writing and concept 🛸... And ofcourse it's a headbanger straight thru!!!
@@countmackular4108 Yeah, it's essentially a perfect album. Dave's masterpiece. Imo shits all over anything Metallica did post-Justice/Black. The tour at the time (remember Clash Of the Titans?) Was awesome too. I quite enjoyed the next three albums after that (Youthanasia especially has really grown on me), as well as large portions of what has followed since, but Rust was their high watermark for sure!
Great show … 1990 I was 16.
My Top 10 Glam N’ Sleaze from 1990:
01. Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room
02. Hericane Alice - Tear The House Down
03. Tigertailz - Bezerk
04. Damn Yankees - Damn Yankees
05. Winger - In The Heart Of The Young
06. Warrant - Cherry Pie
07. Slaughter - Stick It To Ya
08. Poison - Flesh & Blood
09. Dogs D‘Amour - Straight??!!
10. Little Caesar - Little Caesar
HM:
Lynch Mob - Wicked Sensation
Extreme - Pornograffitti
Steelheart - Steelheart
Firehouse - Firehouse
Ratt - Detonator
GREAT list! There's a few in here I need to revisit as well. Hey, thanks for watching, man.
My favorite album from 1990 is 'Electric Angels' - Ryan Roxie is one of my favorite guitar players and Jonathan Daniel is one of my favorite songwriters. IDK if it's underrated or should have been huge, but I absolutely love it. That and Love/Hate's 'Blackout in the Red Room' take my 1990 all the way.
My honorable mentions:
1.Firehouse
2.Duran Duran Liberty
3.Scorpions Crazy World
I worship that Electric Angels album, man... absolutely should've blown up, along with Love/Hate. Thanks for watching!
Wingers second album but also Yngwie malmsteens eclipse from 1990 and so many others definitely need another video from 1990 thanks as always
Lynch Mob "Wicked Sensation" is one my desert island records. The 2nd one was half decent but you should check out "Smoke this" just for a laugh ! They came back strong with Oni on vox with :Rebel" & "The Brotherhood" LPs and the one EPs with him. I don't care much about the latest one with the new vocalist.
Really liked the first 2 lynch mob albums, always thought I'd like everything lynch did until smoke this, totally checked out until the end machine came out. Even liked his solo sacred groove.
For some reason I never gravitated to Lynch Mob. But I will revisit Wicked Sensation because a ton of people I know love that album. Thanks for the comment, man.
through these eyes is a killer ballad that never gets any love. its such a great song. lynch mob's performance on in-concert 91 on abc was killer as well.
I saw Little Caesar/Slaughter/Kiss in Philly, PA. Killer show. Little Caesar blew me away. Slaughter was killer as expected. I am a HUGE KISS nerd and they ripped.
I did see Faster Pussycat and Trixter open for Kiss on the Revenge tour. That show was great. The good old days.
Never saw Little Caesar... which sucks. And yo're right, KISS on the Hot in the Shade tour was unreal... my 2nd major concert after... REO Speedwagon haha.
the tv show unsolved mysteries had a segment about a radio dj in la who was killed in a random act of violence. then out of nowhere, they start playing a little ceaser music video clip that was for a song that was dedicated to that guy. i about fell out of my chair seeing little ceaser's song on unsolved mysteries with robert stack!
My top 10 Hard Rock / Heavy Metal Albums from 1990
1. Poison - Flesh And Blood
2. Warrant - Cherry Pie
3. Scorpions - Crazy World
4. Ratt - Detonator
5. Slaughter - Stick It To Ya
6. Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze Of Glory
7. Stryper - Against The Law
8. Firehouse - Firehouse
9. Damn Yankees - Damn Yankees
10. Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Honorable Mentions
Deliverance - Weapons Of Our Warfare

Winger - In The Heart Of The Young
Nelson - After The Rain
Extreme - Extreme II - Pornograffitti
Steelheart - Steelheart

Don Dokken - Up From The Ashes
My favorites from 1990 that you didn't mention are
Hericane Alice - Tear The House Down
Julliet - s/t
Heavens Edge - s/t
Jagged Edge - Fuel For Your Soul
Also I want to say that the Rhino Bucket debut is incredible, and I also agree on the Cherry Pie take. It's much more than just the "Cherry Pie" song. I remember showing my guitar teacher Uncle Tom's Cabin and he was so surprised to learn that it's a Warrant song, because it's so heavy and has a badass solo.
Great video!
Uggh, I should've included Julliet... can't believe I forgot about that one--I LOVE that album. Need to revisit Jagged Edge, it's been a while. Hey, thanks a lot for the support, man, I really appreciate it.
Matti has one of the best voices ever !
@@christianpoint0888 Yes! He's great! When I showed Jagged Edge to my guitar teacher he was shocked when he heard the vocals, he just asked me 'How are these guys not huge?"
@@gosholin5391 I get it ! Just a pure voice ! Checkout Skintrade ! More of Matti ! Fuel for your soul really was one of the hidden gems from 5he hair era ! Myke Grey did some really good stuff called Skin ! Seems he always surrounded himself with great singers ! In other news , it’s Too Late from Hericane always made my mix tapes ! Great guitar & moody vocals !
@@christianpoint0888 I'll check it out!
Queensryche Empire
RATT detonator
Bad Company Holy water
Are really great albums from 90 . Great year for rock 🤘🏻
I really struggled to not include Detonator... Part 2 eventually!
Perfect timing I can enjoy some talk about my favorite genre of rock n roll before heading out to my daily appointments. Thanks again Brother. These videos help keep my spirits up. I'm unfortunately disabled and been unable to work since 2021 so anything positive to keep my mind out the gutter is welcome.
Hey, Brother, I'm so glad these videos can play a small part in making your day better. Sincerely. I will always be pulling for things to go your way, Man.
I learned the hard way to nab these late 80’s/early 90’s hair metal band CDs as soon as I find them. Some of them are out of print and very expensive or hard to find so if/when these older legacy bands’ albums get re-released, grab them! Don’t sit on your hands and wait because next thing you know, it may no longer be available for sale or if it is, it’s become prohibitively expensive! I’ve found this to be true with new releases on Frontiers Records-they’ll release something by say, Stryper or some other 80’s band and within 6-12 months, it’ll become out of print.
I saw Slaughter open up for KISS with Winger on the last night of the Hot in the Shade Tour at MSG (I think it was Eric Carr's final show before he died).
Such a great video! 1990 is a year that has so many great albums, its impossible to list them all. Definitely deserves a Part 2. Honorable mentions for me that weren't mentioned: Heaven's Edge - S/T, Trixter - S/T, Tigertailz- Bezerk(one of my favorites of 90), Pretty Maids - Jump the Gun, Ratt - Detonator, Valentine - S/T, Killer Dwarfs - Dirty Weapons, Hericane Alice- Tear the House Down, Sweet FA - Stick to Your Guns, Julliet- S/T, Child's Play - Rat Race, Every Mother's Nightmare - S/T, Winger - In the Heart of the Young, Spread Eagle - S/T, London/D'Priest- Playa Del Rock, and Cry Wolf - Crunch (I will die on a hill for this album lol)
Some great albums there and some would be on my part 2 list. Crunch by Cry Wolf is awesome and I would be right next to you on that hill.
I agree with Heavens Edge. Great band. I'll check out the other bands you have listed here. I'm always looking for little known bands from the 89-93 era.
I'm on that hill too. Cry Wolf was a great debut. Too bad the timing wasn't right. They deserved so much more than they got.
Matt, great list, and I definitely missed a bunch--there will need to be a part 2 for sure. ESPECIALLY Julliet, I can't believe that wasn't in this video. So many other great releases. Thanks for support, Brother!
No particular order.
1. AC/DC-razors edge
2. Poison- flesh & blood
3. Blue Tears-S/T
4. Trixter-S/T
5. Julliet-S/T
6. Warrant- cherry pie
7. Jon Bon Jovi- young guns ll soundtrack
8. Cinderella- heart break station ( I know guru and Brian hate it lol but I think Tom Keifer does no wrong)
9. Damn Yankees- S/T
10. Electric Angels- S/T (I agree with guru on this album. So damn good. I still have a bunch of magazines from back in the day and in one of them Jon Bon Jovi said electric angels was his favorite band at the time and Jovi had already finished up their New Jersey tour. I always wonder if they could’ve had that chance to open for Jovi it could be a whole different ballgame for them)
Alternates:
1.Ratt- detonator
2.Child’s play-S/T
3.Lynch mob- wicked sensation
4.Every Mother’s Nightmare-S/T
5. Bad Company- holy water (I don’t really look at bad company as hair metal and that’s why it’s an alternate but love that album
6.Baton Rouge-shake your soul
Shit, I completely forgot Julliet--I LOVE that album. They will definitely be in part 2. Great list, Brother.
Yea love that album a lot
Babylon AD was a killer band. The kid goes wild off the Robocop 2 soundtrack was a killer song. The whole record was killer. I have recently been listening to Damn Yankees again. It was so over played on the WPB Z Rock station that I couldn't stand high enough for 30years. Its a great tune to jam from time to time just not once an hour. They drove that song till the wheels fell off.
I definitely am a Babylon AD fan--need to include them at some point.
Thanks guys
Hey, thank YOU for watching. Seriously.
Two of my favorite albums are UP FROM THE ASHES,DON DOKKEN, WICKED SESATION ,LYNCH MOB
For some reason Lynch Mob never really grabbed me, but I love Up From The Ashes.
My favorite warrant song thin disguise awesome tune
AMAZING song. Can't believe it didn't make the American release of Cherry Pie.
@@HairMetalGuru419 i would have taken thin disguise over love in stereo any day!
Hidden gem !
That should be an episode. Albums you hated on first listen but now love.
Also, speaking of Slaughter, Blas Elias drums for Trans Siberian Orchestra as well.
Last but not least, for my 1990 Top Ten: Electric Boys - Funk o Metal Carpet Ride
Great idea, Todd, I"m putting that in the list. And I did NOT know that about Blas Elias--I do think I heard he was drumming for the Blue Man Group at some point?
bon jovi's these days was an album i hated on the first listen, but by a year later was my favorite bon jovi album.
You got me with ryno bucket had to get the whole discography’s
I absolutely love hearing stuff like this, my man, seriously, that's half the reason I started this channel.
So happy to see you guys give the quireboys some love!
I love that album!
Definitely a band that deserved better.
Great episode...Great year! Loved seeing Baton Rouge, Trouble Tribe,Sleeze Beez and Electric Angels make ur lists! Love Firehouse,Warrant,Poison,Slaughter and all that stuff too but i agree 100% when Brian said that he almost enjoys the lesser known albums better now cos we havent heard them a million times...🤘...some other good ones in 90 were Child's Play,Spread Eagle and 9.0...keep the episodes coming Guru! Take care and Rock On🤘🤘🤘
The Child’s Play and Spread Eagle debuts are awesome!
Always enjoy when ur on with Guru Brian!

Shit, Jay, I am right with you on the lesser known albums--that's my favorite shit. Hey, Brother, thanks for your support and for being a member, man, I absolutely appreciate it!
So Gutu, you introduced me to lilian axe. Im 57 and had never heard of them till i found your page, BUT, in I think it was 82 a band called Axe released a album called Offering that had a song called Rock n Roll party in the street that went hard. You should check it out.
I have that CD and I fuckin' LOVE Rock 'n' Roll Party In the Streets! Damn, what a great anthem. Thanks for your support, man, I really appreciate it.
01. Don Dokken - Up From The Ashes
02. Killer Dwarfs - Dirty Weapons
03. Shy England - Mispent Youth
04. Deep Purple - Slaves And Masters
05. Black Sabbath - Tyr
06. Pretty Maids - Jump The Gun aka Lethal Heroes
07. Fastway - Bad Bad Girls (I know people don't have much love for Fastway without Dave King. I didn't have such reservations.)
08. Lea Hart - Trapped
(Lea Hart was Dave King's replacement starting on Fastway's On Target, then 1990's Bad Bad Girls. What some may not know is from what I've gathered from interviews is that Fast Eddie wasn't on either of those Fastway albums much, if at all.
They were more Lea Hart albums really. Trapped is a Lea Hart solo album that really sounds like his two Fastway albums. Anyone who likes either On Target or Bad Bad Girls should check out Trapped)
Yep, Mikkey Dee, Peter Baltes, John Norum, awesome
Great list, Brother, and now I need to check out that Lea Hart stuff. Thanks for fill me in, man.
Up from the ashes is arguably the best Dokken album & im a Lynch fan ! What Norum & Billy white did on the album is some of the best guitar work ever !
Awesome job! I love the deep picks. Two of the best from 1990 that not enough people know about -> Salty Dog "Every Dog Has Its Day" and Johnny Crash "Neighbourhood Threat"
Damn, you are so right... especially Johnny Crash. I like Salty Dog, but it didn't grab as much as others. Neighborhood Threat fuckin' rules. Thanks for watching, my man.
Cool to see Trouble Tribe get mentioned and love that Blue Tears gets some love on this channel, one of my all time favorite bands. Im surprised Tigertailz - Bezerk didnt make the list!!! A couple more obscure gems from 1990 and also happen to all be Canadian are
Gypsy Rose - Prey
Harlots Webb - Wild Times
Syre - It Ain't Pretty Being Easy
Damn, I don't know if I know about Harlots Webb or Syre--gonna need to find those on the net. I LOVE Blue Tears... damn.
The "God save the Queen" vocal-less outtake from Flesh & Blood pretty much explains the creative rift between Brett and CC. CC wanted the simplistic raw punk rebellion and Brett wanted southern rock meets Bon Jovi. Turns out CC was instinctively in the right(who knew Green Day was coming?) but in the short term, Brett's style pushed millions more sales for Poison.
So wrong
CC was definitely part of that punky, 3 chord pop metal that they had on Look What the Cat Dragged In,,, and I think you're right, because look how the sound changed so drastically on Native Tongue.
Went to a ton of show's in 1990
Saw KISS on the Hot in the Shade tour that year--amazing.
You could actually do an episode like this for pretty much every year up to the present if you wanted to, Guru. It's amazing how many of these bands never really died out, but rather took a hiatus, or kept going under the mainstream radar, or broke up and either reformed or returned under different names with new projects. I mean, just a shortlist of classic bands who've kept the fire alive would include Enuff Z Nuff, Hardline, Dokken, Lynch Mob, Bret Michaels, Def Leppard, Winger, Stryper, and Whitesnake to name but a few. And that's not to mention newer acts like Lynch's The End Machine, The Defiants, Tokyo Motor Fist, Nestor, Cruzh, and many, many more. I bet theres a lot of fans out there who may or may not be out of the loop, who would love to discuss these great new releases still keeping Hair Metal alive and kicking.
You are absolutely right, and we probably will do something similar. Hey, shit, we were talking about doing something... I sometimes get lost trying to keep up on my messages... anyway, I have a Hair Metal Guru Facebook page--you should message me there.
@@HairMetalGuru419 I'll try to message you there in the next few days. I don't do Facebook but the wife has an account so I'll do it through hers. Maybe we can arrange a video chat or a phone call or something if you like. Until then, take it easy, man!
Trouble Tribe is on youtube music
Thanks, man.
Thunderstruck was also in the movie Varsity Blues; when the team lost due to the main characters being hungover.
As for Poison, I think Flesh & Blood was their best album. Their first album felt so cheesy, second one was somewhere in between, and this one a more refined and mature (but still upbeat) sound. Native Tongue definitely took a left turn; even though I like Ritchie Kotzen's other stuff.
Firehouse I didn't care for; mainly because of their ballads that were played to death. Nelson also got big right around the same time and was still called hair metal, so that didn't help either.
Thunderstruck, The Thunder Rolls and Enter Sandman are what took down hair metal. Not Smells like Teen Spirit or Alive. Look up Garth Brooks' album sales from the early 90s. He was crushing Nirvana and Pearl Jam without MTV airplay.
Love that movie. Flesh and Blood definitely was the most complete Poison album--not as much filler as the first two. And I'm right with you on Firehouse... liked their rock stuff, but those ballads fuckin' seemed to turn me off of them a bit.

It was also a good year for thrash as well just like one other comment, megadeth, slayer, pantera, flotsam and jetsam, suicidal tendencies, testament, and that's just a few off the top of my head
Damn, that stuff is a little too heavy for me, Brother, haha
Scatterbrain!!!! Hell yeah!!!!
A Scatterbrain fan! Haha, thanks for watching, my man.
Did either of you like Sic Vikki that were amazing in 1990? So good!
Need to revisit that... I'm hearing a lot of people talk it up.
Second lynch mob album is a great album you need to really give it a chance it will really grow on you its fantastic
Shit, I need to revisit that thing.
Uncle Tom's Cabin by Warrant and Lovin' You Is A Dirty Job by Ratt are my favorite songs from this year.
they made an updated version of Down with the Ship with some newer riffs in it like STP, Nirvana, Enter Sandman, etc.
I bought Crowes Shake Your Money Maker with some money from my 12th Birthday. It would be my pivot point , as what I loved would be driven out soon by MTV and Seattle . I grew up with my old man playing CCR , Allman , LZ , Stones , Faces , … so the pivot was DNA . Black Crowes or my favorite band by far from my generation . I still think the genre held on til 92 or 93. The staples like GnR , Motley , Ozzy with Zakk , AC/DC and VH . I would find bands like Four Horsemen and Cry Of Love and Drivin and Cryin .. not hair metal , not Seattle , just good .
The Four Horsemen and Cry of Love are great blues influenced bands. So underrated.
I'm right with you, Brother. I got into the Crowes, Soul Asylum, Drivin N Crying, Four Horseman and a bunch more. Weird time, but there was still solid music coming out.
Excellent video! All great choices but I have to admit, I never got into The Quireboys (no catchy hooks, riffs or solos IMO) Them and The Dogs D’Amour always deceived me with that glammy sleazy look. Maybe I should revisit. I think they are good but I would put any of these above them:
Hericane Alice - Tear The House Down
Vixen - Rev It Up
Baton Rouge - Shake Your Soul
Trixter - S/T
Heavens Edge - S/T
Tigertailz - Bezerk
Victory - Temples Of Gold
House Of Lords - Sahara
Ratt - Detonator
Every Mother’s Nightmare - S/T
Thanks for sharing such great stuff! 🤘🏻🎸🔥
I remember that for about one hot minute the Quireboys seemed poised to become 'the next big thing' but very quickly got overtaken by The Black Crowes as the undisputed kings of that whole Rolling-Stones-Roots-Rock scene. They started out strong but got lost in the shuffle real quick. If you dig that sound at all, a really good act from I think, 93 was Cry Of Love with the album Brother. Very solid release with some great tracks who should have gotten a lot more love, but got unjustly buried and forgotten beneath the Alternative landslide.
@@ciaranmeeks9431 I remember buying that Cry of Love album... they were talked about a lot for a little while, then disappeared.
Great list, Eddie... a lot of these were in my honorable mentions... need to do a part 1!
Pornograffitti might be the greatest guitar riffage ever recorded ! Legendary groovy mojo !
Dude, check out the band Sweet Cheater....album name is Eatin Ain't Cheatin'.....solid tracks, Summer, All Fired Up, Romina and Money's Tough
Damn, I'm 95% certain I have that CD... need to revisit, man, thanks for the reminder.
I don't see my favorite album cover up there, UP FROM THE ASHES DON DOKKEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALBUM GREAT FROM START TO FINISH
I really like that album as well... but there were so damn many album...
You guys hit all my mine except for one. Don Dokken's "Up From the Ashes" was released in 1990 and is a great album. Not a bad track on there. John Norum and Billy White on guitars and Don played some guitar as well. "When Some Nights", "Stay", "Mirror, Mirror", and "Crash and Burn" are some of my faves. The ballad "When Love Finds a Fool" is really good too. Poison's "Flesh and Blood" is a masterpiece. CC Deville's guitar tone and solos never sounded better. He plays one of his best solos on "Life Goes On". FYI that song was largely written by CC. He was having some girlfriend troubles and Bret told him to make a song about it as a therapy tool. Regarding Slaughter: I actually prefer the acoustic version of "Fly to the Angels" on the album even though I love the electric version also. There is an amazing unplugged performance on MTV where Mark just kills it live.
That album is arguably better than almost half the Dokken releases that preceded it. Just a killer, KILLER piece of work! Doesn't get nearly the credit that it should in Don's catalogue.
Hey, Brother, thanks for all the great info. Up From the Ashes is a great album... there were just too damn many. Completely agree on Flesh and Blood. Yeah, that acoustic Fly to the Angels is great!
@@HairMetalGuru419 Thanks to you and your channel I went back and revisited Warrant's Dog Eat Dog album. I remember buying that when it was new and loving it. For some reason I didn't keep my copy of the CD so after listening to it again here on youtube I had to get an MP3 of it. Still love it! So good. I've also been listening to McQueen Street and Wildside based on your reviews and they are both really good. I didn't know about them before. Thanks!
Lynch mob - rebel is an absolute amazing album, oni sounds incredible. And the ballad the ledge is one of the best ballads ive heard its a top to bottom killer record...
Okay, shit, now I need to check that out. Thanks for the comment.
Rhino Bucket! Yes!!!!
Absolutely love that band.
And a great year it twas !
I'd say 1991 was.. Nirvana came out of nowhere as a new band to everyone when Smells like Teen spirit released. They weren't instantly more popular than Guns N Roses who were the biggest band still when Nirvana came out. The Use Your Illusions 1&2 initially was a bigger album than Nervermind. Your talking the follow up to one of the best selling rock albums ever in Appetite. I don't believe Nirvana got more popular than GNR until 1992-1993 maybe even after Kurt unfortunately passes away because throughout the whole 90's decade Nevermind would continue to be a big album while by the late 90''s it wasn't as cool to be a GNR fan anymore. 1990 is the bonus year of the 80's. Nothing 90's about the year 1990 lol Still the 80's.
8191- like ratts hits album title best covers the hair metal decade
'91 was definitely a great year, and you're right, it's not like grunge walked in and took over the top of the charts... but they did by '92. Thanks for the great comment, man.
Saw f firehouse in 1990 with Tesla. I was a little disappointed in them, I was waiting for Tesla to come on. Maybe it was my brother not liking firehouse.I’ll have to check them out.

Operation Mindcrime was Bryan's #1 album from 1988--so Queensryche seems to be doing fairly well in these videos.

@@HairMetalGuru419 the tangier records were good too!
Not into Lynch Mob? Guru needs to go back and listen to lots of good albums. Also i like Native Tongue. Sleeze Beez is one of my top ten of all time
I'm listening to Wicked Sensation as I type this comment, my Brother! Haha. However, you liking Native Tongue knocks your cool factor down a few points... jk. And I'm with you about Sleeze Beez, I fuckin' worship that band. Appreciate your support and being a member, Brother, I mean that!
@@HairMetalGuru419 rock on Guru
@@gellargod Always, my Brother.
Didn't Jake E Lee play guitar in Company of Wolves? Or was it Badlands?
badlands
@@patrickreeves4650 thanks I had them mixed up
Your second channel the grunge guru... Heavy flannel yeah..Filter WhiteZombie Primus ...Sleez Beez
Could be happening in the future... ;-)
That lynchmob album is fantastic from start to finish you definitely need to revisit that album even the second album with robert mason that one really grows on you they are both fantastic, but i would definitely disagree up from the ashes better in my opinion and don dokken is a better singer in my opinion
Listening to Wicket Sensation right now!
Scorpions Crazy World Ratt Detonator and Cinderella Heartbreak Station didn't make your lists?? I know we have our own opinions.
There were so many albums to choose from... Detonator was on my Honorable Mentions. Man, I haven't listened to Crazy World for a while--need to revisit.
Up from the Ashes is arguably the best Dokken album ever ! What Norum & Billy White pulled off is some of the best guitar work from the Hair Era ! Too bad it was 1 & done ! Bigger crime is , there is no pro shot footage from that tour ! How the f does that happen ?
Johnny Crash want to know why they're not featured on your show..also FASTWAY Bad Girls is a cockroach one shot.. subtract that out..and Seduce Slave Raider Madam X Lizzy Borden DC LaCroix and Blue Cheers 1985 lineup
Man, I LOVE Johnny Crash and all of those bands--okay, I do need to revisit Blue Cheery and LaCroix. But I'm with you on the rest.
You never mention WWIII killer album 😢
Y&T Ten is great
I've been touting Baton Rouge's debut for decades now. One of my favorite debuts. Speaking of that, you guys really need to check out the self titled WAR BABIES album. Came out about the same time and it rocks from top to bottom.
Train Train should have been a B-side and Thin Disguise should have been on the album. I will die on that hill. Sorry but TT is awful and cover tunes in 1990 are a waste of time. That and the bullshit 'Ode to Tipper Gore' were a goddamn waste of time a space on an otherwise great album. Deleted both from my ipod.
Just got into Baton Rouge in the last year--had their stuff when it came out but just didn't grab me at that time. And I LOVE War Babies... just haven't found a place to include them yet. Great album. And I'm completely with you on Thin Disguise and Train Train, why put a cover on when have that fuckin' amazing original?
Tbh I don't like a lot of these bands and if I did I don't listen to them anymore other than the Warrant and Queensryche records.Baton Rouge and Trouble Tribe etc. were part of the reason the genre died. It got watered down with every band with long hair getting a deal. I look forward to the NXT one.
Hey, man, thanks for the comment and for always supporting what I do.
Adam Bomb - Pure SEX
I know Adam Bomb, but I need to revisit that.
@@HairMetalGuru419 he was a really cool guitarist, I think he nearly joined Kiss but they found out he was lying about his age. He did a solo album in 85 but he got caught in some contractual stuff (or something) and the follow up didn’t get released til 90. It’s a great mix of hard rockers and big ballads. You can find his albums only on Bandcamp.
I can't hear Dana Strum without thinking of his ex wife, Tami Monroe.
Johnny Crash
Please say it's not true Guru... Now they're saying you traded a Lillian axe t-shirt for limp Bizkit hoodie.. what are you going to do on this alternate Channel come out and say.."they call me the grunge guru. I came to do two things.. where flannel and eat jelly beans. And I really don't like jelly beans anymore".. there's help available
Haha, dude, you're killing me
So you're threatening to wear flannel if we don't watch your videos more.wtf..ok ok I watch more please.. don't do this no candlebox
I love wicked sensation but I totally disagree up from the ashes a better album
I'm a huge Up From the Ashes fan.
Scatterbrain is not hair metal to me
Eh, you know the Hair Band Basement doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about... ;-)
