- Join my buddy Ryan and I as we discuss what is--arguably--the greatest year in hair metal history. A year filled with epic debuts and multi-platinum smashes, whether you think it's the best or not, there is no denying the importance of 1989... so come check it out!
I graduated from high school in 89 so it holds a special place to me.
Another great video!!!
Hey, thanks, man, I really do appreciate it... seriously.
Lmfao Ryan with his left field obscure as shit albums! I love it! You two hit a really nice balance with Guru going for the big hitters and Ryan subverting expectations with the esoteric bombshells. Coz you do need both. Like Guru side in an earlier video, the big genre defining acts need to be given their dues but at the same time, if all the choices were predictable then it'd be less fun. Also, I fucking love the 1.5, 2 hour epic videos. It's not overly long. It's mandatory. Rock on.
Awsome. Every time I watch your videos I discover bands I somehow missed. Thank you so much!
Great lists!! Love the shoutouts to Banshee "Race Against Time" and Vain "No Respect", those would be in my top 10 too. 1989 has so many good albums, I'm looking forward to the part 2. Badlands, Blue Murder, Enuff Z'Nuff, Tora Tora- Surprise Attack, Warrant-DRFSR, Lillian Axe-Love+War, Motley Crüe - Dr. Feelgood, and Shark Island-Law of the Order would all be in my top 10 as well. Speaking of Pretty Boy Floyd, the Canadian Pretty Boy Floyd's Bullets & Lipstik (LP) is a great album from 89. Tangier-Four Winds, Extreme-S/T Blue Blud-The Big Noise, XYZ- S/T, Faster Pussycat-Wake Me When It's Over, Fifth Angel- Time Will Tell, Babylon AD-ST, Leatherwolf- Street Ready, and Bad English-ST are honorable mentions as well
Great album. I'd suggested the GURU check out the latest ASKA song, Soul Stealer, and their vocalist, George Call, did the last two Banshee albums, although he's not on Race Against Time.
I've heard of that Canadian PBF--I need to check out that album again. There definitely has to be a part 2 at some point. Hey, Matt, thanks again for your support, Brother, I really appreciate it.
Not a bad one on that list.
1989 is a year full of bangers! My favorite releases are:
Danger Danger - s/t
Skid Row - s/t
Dangerous Toys - s/t

I'm shocked I didn't find a way to include Cats in Boots... fuck, there are a bunch of great ones in here. Part 2 will happen at some point.
Oh, it's all about Ryan and how great his picks are... I see how it is.
Tora Tora-Surprise Attack is my favourite of 1989. I remember as a 12 or 13 year old playing that cassette to death

Great list, my man, and thanks a ton for the support.
Don’t think I have heard you mention BLACK N BLUE they have some killer songs nasty nasty is a top one, great work as always
Damn, you are right, I haven't mentioned them... and I'm a big fan. There will be a place for them eventually. Hey, thanks a lot for the support, man, I really appreciate it.
Black n Blue’s In Heat album is one of my favorite albums of the decade
Good timing. I have my 1989 memory stick in the car so working through most of these albums. The Giant is the greatest AOR album of all time. The Vain is the best glam metal album. The Lilian Axe is awesome. Danger Danger, Tora Tora, awesome stuff.
I'm with you on Giant... damn, that album is awesome.
That Banshee-Album is great. Great to see that a rather unknown band receives such attention from you.
Great list guys. I gotta check out Banshee now, was the only band I haven't heard of that you picked. I'm surprised Tesla The Great Radio Controversy wasn't picked. I would put that and Leatherwolf Street Ready in my top 10 but you guys probably covered the rest. Love your content
Hey, thanks a lot for the support, man, I really appreciate it.
Once again Lillian Axe comes up tops ! Absolutely love that album and band and it’s really great to see them bringing out these box sets , they are probably bigger now than they’ve ever been. BTW I still have all my Kerrang magazines up until I stopped buying it towards the end of the 90’s when it went Kerrap! Being from the UK Kerrang magazine and The Friday Rock Show with the late great Tommy Vance was all we had during the 80’s to learn about this great music. There are a few bands on here I’ve not heard of so I’ll be checking them out on my RUclips Music - cheers to both of you
Hey, thanks a lot for the support, man, I really appreciate it. And I laughed out loud when you said Kerrang turned to Kerrap! haha
TNT intuition from 1989 is killer Tony Harnell is one of the most underrated vocalists of that era but great list and great video as always super fun to watch
I need to revisit that TNT album, it's been a while. Hey, thanks a lot for the support, man, I really appreciate it.
Enuff Znuff (self titled)
Shotgun Messiah (self titled)
Bang Tango- Psycho Cafe
Faster Pussycat-----Wake Me Up When It's Over
Just my $0.02 added to the list. You pretty much named all my other faves of '89.
There needs to be a part 2 because there were a ton of great albums left on the shelf.
@@HairMetalGuru419 For sure.1989 really was the peak year. From my perspective as a musician, it was the last year where originality had any value. Vain, Enuff Znuff, Skid Row, Shotgun Messiah...you couldn't mistake one for the other or give a simple description like "they sound like AC/DC or KISS or whatever". You could hear the influence but they took those influences and did something with them. The turn of the decade brought a huge influx of generic copycat bands and that will always doom a scene.
Great summer , bought to go into Junior High . Motley was going to drop Dr Feelgood , Warrant and Skid Row everywhere , Cinderella Coming Home . Hanging out at the YMCA pool , the radio was on fire too . Jeff Healey and Angel Eyes , Petty Free Falling , Living Colour Cult of Personality.
I love Tom Petty. Great times, Brother.
We have very similar tastes! I did a top 60 of 89 about 3 years ago, 88-92 are my favorite years of music and 89 may just be the best although 90 and 91 are very close, awesome video!! 👍🤘🤘
I'm still not sure what year is my favorite, but 89 comes close for sure. And I've really grown to love 92-94. Hey, thanks a lot for the support, man, I really appreciate it.
How the fuck do Bang Tango, Enuff Z’ Nuff and Lizzy Borden miss this list? Not to mention Aerosmith Michael Monroe, Faster Pussycat and Tesla. From this video only LA Guns and Vain and Probably Skid Row make my top 10 along with the 7 I listed. Honorable mention to Doro’s first solo album and Dangerous Toys. A truly great year that also included sone fierce alternative rock from Faith No More, The Cult, Mary’s Danish, Masters of Reality, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
There were so many honorable mentions that we will have to doa part 2. I love most of the shit you said, especially the Aerosmith, Monroe, FP and Tesla albums.
Thank you for the mention, if you guys ever want to chat let me know :)
Hey, I have a Hair Metal Guru Facebook page... let's chat there and maybe we can set something up. Thanks, man.
Cant wait to watch this, I always thought 1986 & 1987 was the greatest year so I'm excited to hear about 1989
I'm not sure what year is my favorite, but '89 has to be in the conversation. Hope you dig it!
Hi from Cornwall in uk
Loving the shows and finding new albums to listen to
Have you listened to jimmy Barnes freight train heart absolutely killer
Has Neal Schon and Jonathan Caine from journey on it top stuff
Holy shit, people from Cornwall in the UK watch this shit! Unreal, and thanks for your support, Brother. And, YES, I fuckin' love Jimmy Barnes... Working Class Man is a frickin' anthem to end all anthems.
Jani Lane was an underrated song writer. Proof is in the Jabberwocky album
My band for this video, 1989: Bablyon A.D. - ST
Your right on imo the best hard rock album ever Love and war!
I fuckin' love that album and that band.
I tend to agree it was but I also think I might be biased as that was my senior year of high school which was a fairly awesome time
That definitely plays a part, no doubt.
The Hair Metal Guru vs Eddie Trunk vs Danny Waysted on an episode of Celebrity Hair Metal Jeopardy!
Yessss guru rules.... Now about that grunge Guru Channel. I found out that it's a doppelganger
You're gonna shit when I actually wear a flannel shirt at some point. ;-)
Lol do it in the 96 video. When you get to the year 2000 you're going to have to tackle the hair metal crossover with industrial
1989 was the peak for hair metal. it could be argued that 1990 may be an equal year, but in my opinion, everyone and their grandmother released a record in those two years.
the hard thing about these lists, is they usually are the same bands over and over, as the labels rushed all the successful artists to put another record out every 12-18 months. i appreciate ryan putting artists in the list that we haven't heard named. if we go by best albums, i think you get more artists that don't get the time and respect they deserve...but if you go by popular artists, you get the one's that were shoved down are throats. granted, they were good...but they are obvious picks.
that vain album epitomizes one of the finest examples of sleeze rock you could ever put on tape. every song is a gem, and nobody touches daivy vain's unique vocal performance. a true gem. their tour with skid row in the uk was the only major tour they did...outside of playing in japan on and off for a few years. guru kinda danced over their further releases, but i will tell you this...the follow up album "all those stranger" wasn't commercially released until some time in the mid 2000's, however island records did press promo's of the album in 1991 and had them sent out. those promo cassette's fetch hundreds when they show up on ebay. i was able to find one in a used music shop for a quarter...one of the best collectibles in my collection.
subsequent releases are all eclectic, and filled with brilliant songwriting. 1996's fade is a wonderful, lush record that has some of the finest songs they crafted, however it is a departure from the sleaze sound of the first record. davy vain's solo record in from out of nowhere is chalk full of hard rockers, and lush ballads. great songwriter.
I try to get a mix of the popular and obscure... I've always said it's my preference to talk about the bands that didn't reach the fame and fortune of bands like, say, Skid Row and Warrant... but I also don't want to abandon those bands, as they were a huge part of my love of this type of music.
@@HairMetalGuru419 never abandon the music that is in your heart brother. all of these records have a special place to all of us. it is the music we found love, and life with. your channel is awesome brother!
89 rules!
Hell, yes, it does.
Who does Ryan run with?
Forgot to add am right up there with Ryan in Slip Of The Tongue was all sorts of excellent, although as good as it was can't put Slow Poke ahead of Wings Of The Storm, Judgement Day, Deeper The Love, Now You're Gone, Sailing Ships and the Title-Track \m/
Yeah, Ryan's never been accused of being the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree. ;-) jk
@@HairMetalGuru419 LOL
PS did you get the pic I sent you messenger, just checking sent thru okay!? :)
1989 - The year Mama finally let me go to the show.
'Bout damn time she let you go.
@@HairMetalGuru419 Grief does funny things. My dad died 2 weeks after my 17th birthday in Jan 89.
I'm not sure she let me so much as just not having the strength to stop me.
If that seems rude on my part, it was. My grief triggered a couple years of absolute asshole mode until my best friend's death in Dec 91 turned asshole mode to apathetic drug addict mode.
It was a rough half decade or so, that somehow also includes some of the best memories I have.
Death hardened me. Hair metal kept me alive.
@@lovejoyb20 Damn, Brother, that is an amazing story. Seriously. Thank you for sharing that. And sorry about your father. Hey, man, I appreciate you watching and sharing what the music means to you, I can relate... --The Guru
@@HairMetalGuru419 Your videos are my therapy sessions, and to be honest I haven't even watched this one yet. I saw 1989 and went from "this is gonna be awesome" to "do you really wanna go there?" in about a half a second, but I couldn't leave without dropping a hair metal reference of some kind. As I'm sure you noticed, my comments on your videos are usually far longer than that. 🤣
My dad was so solidly my rock that I didn't even really realize it until my mom died (at 81 and expected) in 2021. I was as OK as you can be when a parent dies until I got to her funeral and saw his name on their headstone. I broke trying to say, "Hi Dad". They're buried together where I grew up and I hadn't been back since his funeral. For about 10 seconds, I was 17 again. It was horrible and amazing at the same time.
Don't stop now. These are the triggers I need. 🤘
I have that Banshee cd!! Great album.Mats Leven also sang for Therion. The guy is amazing.Lillian Axe is good but it doesn't get me sporting a Woody.
I need to listen that Banshee album. Lillian Axe doesn't get you sportin' a woody... fuck, it does for me. ;-) Hey, thanks a lot for the support, man, I really appreciate it.
@@HairMetalGuru419 keep up the good work Guru!!
It is a great surprise to see several Europian bands on your list. I believe hair metal (beside rock 'n' roll, rockabilly) is the most American genre in rock/metal music. Maybe that is reason why it was never really popular here. But anyway 1989 was really a grat year. I think the Lillian Axe song, She Likes It On Top has the best gitar solo in rock songs.
It still blows me away that people from Europe watch this shit... thank you, Brother! And, yes, hair metal was definitely an American phenomenon, but now in recent years it seems that Sweden is where the cool hair metal bands come from. And, yeah, anything Lillian Axe is generally fuckin' awesome. Thanks again, man.
Great year for hair metal. Wish it never ended
It didn't. Here's a shortlist of bands still releasing albums within the last few years: Enuff Z Nuff, Great White, Winger, Lynch Mob, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Stryper, Hardline, and House Of Lords. Also lots of great new bands like The End Machine, The Defiants, Nestor, Cruzh...man the list goes on. The label Frontiers Records has also become a home for lots of these kinds of bands too. Check them out. There's still TONS to discover and enjoy!
Father time is still undefeated... the fucker.
The other thing that makes Slip of the Tongue sales even more astonishing is how little they sold even with Steve Vai on guitar, who was considered one of the best at the time. You would think the guitar-heads into the Vai's or Satriani's of the world would have helped push that album just because of Vai. Consider this little fact... Steve Vai's instrumental album Passion and Warfare was released four months after Slip of the Tongue and sold 850,000 copies in America. Says a lot about how much Whitesnake fell after the 87 album. Even with a guy like Vai that can sell 850,000 albums on his own, you can only get a little over a million sales? I wonder what would have happened if they didn't have Vai on that album.
Great video fellas but I have to quibble how are leatherwolf and fifth angel hair metal they are power metal//speed metal
We really stretch the boundaries of hair metal, and include a lot of bands that definitely are NOT hair metal. Shit, I talk about AC/DC all the time.
@@HairMetalGuru419 Thats cool yeah i ve noticed that and acdc may not have been glam metal or hair metal per se but along with aerosmith sure set a template for allot of 80s bands . I wasnt trying to sound like one of those genre elitists lol.
@@joshuascott3428 No worries at all, man, and I didn't think you sounded like a dick at all. I appreciate you watching and sharing your thoughts... seriously.
I saw Vain support Skid Row back in the day and they blew SR off the stage.
Wow, that surprises me... I'd give anything to have been at that show.
Hard to believe Mechanical Resonance by Tesla didn't make either list. Also, could make a strong argument for any of these debuts by Blue Murder, Badlands or Mr. Big.
Did you mean The Great Radio Controversy? Mechanical Resonance came out in '86. And, you're right about the other albums--we need to do a part 2. Thanks for watching, man.
@@HairMetalGuru419 actually yes, got the titles mismatched

Great White Twice Shy one of my favorites. Album really has no fillers. Once bitten twice shy my least favorite.
I've been doing a shitty job of including Great White... and I dig that band.
@@HairMetalGuru419 thanks for the reply and keeping good music alive. Great White is one of my favorites.
Several albums and a lot of their best songs get & got overlooked. First self titled album, Shot in the dark,Psycho City, and Let it Rock are all 4 nearly forgotten albums .
I like it when Hair Metal Gurus have very little hair 😊👍
I guess my favourite hair metal band is Judas Priest. 😉
And my favorite smartass commenter is Jonas Andersson. jk
love it!
Appreciate you, Brother!
Love tuff! Have a lot of Stevie signed stuff! I’m telling ya watch badlands dreams in the dark and tell me Jake E Lee don’t look like Jeff Labar. Someone tell keifer to get Eric and Fred back with Jake e Lee and do a tribute tour for Jeff!
Wasn't 89 the year Nitro released O.F.R.!?! I remember watching that video clip for Freight Train on RUclips not long back and some guy commented 'This is what you'll see if you look at cocaine through a microscope!' 😂
I love Lillian Axe but Ron Taylor is the best. It still a shame they didnt get bigger then they did because of bad record company support. I love the fact that u r getging a new generation if rockers familiar with a great bad that was under rated. I swear if Ron went on the Voice he would win.
YES YES YES YES, '89 even beats '87 when u REEEALLY look back!
Great fucking year, agreed.
@hairmetalguru sorry but actually joan jett Co wrote house of fire with Alice cooper

Haha, I always try to take Steel Panther's word on this shit...
Hell no, 1987 was the best. There was so much schlock in '89. In '87 you had great new albums, as well as tours for the albums that were released in late '86.
In my opinion: 1984 or 1989.
Man, 84 was awesome as well.
