This is one of the first scenes where I thought to myself, 'This is game I remember loving so much!'. Joel's deadpan pained expression while Ellie fires off one bad pun after another...
It helps that the actors didn't base their performances off of the game, so the writing was all largely new to them. Hence, fresh deliveries and the charm remains intact.
It is the apocalypse. The dad is the one saying no to the dad jokes.

Biodiversity-wise, I’m assuming the planet is doing quite well, seeing as the Cordyceps only affects humans. Who knows, in a couple of centuries, when the last humans are gone and the infected all die from lack of new sources, the level of diversity that existed before humans might return.

Eh. She gets Ellie right a lot of the time, but she does mess up with the accent at times. For example, at 3:00, I have no idea where she was going with that, "Hold your horses."

This is how you do a live action adaptation of a game. You take small creative liberties here and there, but you hold true to the source material in pivotal scenes like this.

You know it's funny, around the time of the outbreak in 2003 is before Jimmy fully devolved into Saul. I'd like to think that he and Kim survived somehow, and now he works as a public defendant in the Albuquerque QZ. Mike would 100% survive this, but with his love of Pimento Cheese Sandwiches, I'm afraid he might not have.
The handheld shakiness gives it a Breaking Bad feel.

That siphon technique I've never seen before, I've always heard/seen the "one hose, suck through one to start the siphon and let gravity do the work" technique, but you could end up swallowing gas that way
This method seems to remove all chances of gas consumption, safer!

There's a minor detail most will miss about this, though.
All fuel systems are vented, so you would be able to actually do that unless you had a higher pressure air source, that would overcome the constant loss thru a vent.
It looks great, but is another Hollywood trick.

Doesn’t work as well when u take in most gas tanks are vented and he’d need a lot more pressure to do that

The town next to me back i n2003 they had a Big ex-army truck they used to plow the roads.
Handy tip: because most gasoline has ethanol added to it, after a year or so most of it would be useless. Unless there are refineries (like in Mad Max Fury Road) you can siphon all you want but it won’t work.

Aside from the fact that in a post apocalyptic world, these dudes look soooo healthy, I’m also pretty sure that trick wouldn’t run on fuel that had been sat around in a tank that long. Otherwise this looks very cool.

When I watch this I think of "Life After People" and how our infrastructure would wear out without maintanence. If I was driving on a highway especially, I'd still drive slowly, as you wouldn't know what bad patches were coming up.

I still don’t understand how an infected would get into one of the tanks and disable it, let alone three of them. Maybe they were destroyed in some inter-human war between different military factions.
They most likely ran out of gas and had to be abandoned. Logistics in the apocalypse are a bitch.

Really makes me wonder why most ppl are so hooked on to the doomsday, apocalyptic garbage still... I could understand once, with Walking Dead, but this is now just symptomatic. There are no new, quality, proper sci-fies these days, looking far beyond humanity's time, with prosperous new civilisations... just this apocalyptic trash, for th 100th time. Boring. Boring as hell. Sadly it perfectly represents the current mental/emotional/intellectual state of the Western Society.
I agree with you on both fronts. The last sci-fi show I remember that illustrated an actual positive outlook of the future was Star Trek: The Next Generation, which was before my time. And unfortunately yes, this is probably the most realistic outcome for humanity if we were to go through a cataclysmic event. Thomas Jane’s line from the Mist comes to mind “Sure as long as the machines are working and you can dial 911. But you take those things away, you throw people in the dark, you scare the shit out of them, no more rules. You’ll see how primitive they can get.” In other words, too much reality is a little depressing to see all the time in entertainment that is supposed to be a form of escape 😂
