Only time he ever spent full price on a new game for me, and I'll never forget it. Still addicted to this game over 20 years later.

Just a spectacular soundtrack that perfectly fit the game play. OTH, these compositions are so good they could easily stand by themselves. Interestingly, the composer out did this sound track with his next game Tone Rebellion. But the music was just so good it dwarved the game it was playing for. But even with that Ascendancy is easily one of my top 3 game soundtracks of all time. And just like pgakagi said, I feel for all the non-gamers who will never hear this- it's sad.

Perfect game music. What I find interesting is that this really is better as a soundtrack than as music per se. It's not something I'd listen to in isolation, but it was perfectly matched to the sort of game that Ascendancy was, giving it incredible atmosphere.
Back in the day as computers were limited, music was the key to open up wast unexplored territories of the imagination. MechWarrior 2, shitty shitty graphics, just vectors, but functional and that epic soundtrack that came from CD. Dude another level achieved.

Maybe start by having composers submit great weird music themes and then let the devs space out and come up with races that seem to fit the music. I honestly feel it would be right in Ascendancy's spirit to do so.

I thought this game struck a good balance in complexity -- lots to manage but not so much that it was overwhelming. I also liked that it was turn-based; victory didn't depend on how fast I could move my mouse and keyboard.
I had found a way to build an invincible ship, with the largest hull, add many weak passive absorbing shields (no energy cost) and add some long range weapons, victory is yours

I mean, it's a testament how great it is when you play that game countless hours but never get tired of it. For many other games I usually deactivate game music after some time, not here.

MOO was the definitive title, but I never gravitated towards it. Dunno, Ascendancy was more easily approachable. It was considered a "light version" and people shunned upon it a bit so it never became mainstream popular. I fucking enjoyed it thoroughly, soundtracks of my teen years.
Sometimes I think that this music was wasted for computer game (good one by the way) because it didn't make its way to more wide audience who would appreciate it and make it more popular.
