20 Coasters that Shot UP My Rankings in 2022

- I travelled all over the country this year to ride coasters, and these are the top 20 that really impressed me this year, raising my opinion of them for one reason or another. I rode amazing rides like Twisted Colossus, Fury 325, and Lightning Rod, but my opinion didn't change on those. These are the rides that really moved the needle in a positive direction this year.

I also feel like I-305 ran better than ever this year. The trimmed hills still gave flojector airtime similar to Fury, and that final snap and pop into the brakes were both great.
I got my first ride on Alpengeist this year, and found it to be much better than Afterburn, which is quite similar to Montu. It’s the only invert I’ve ridden which actually has a whippy first drop, and the execution of the elements is better than any invert I’ve ridden.
Exactly! I305 far from "dies" after the trims. Everything still hits great all the way to the brakes
Awesome to see Scorpion get some love. It's a classic
My first real coaster, so it’s sentimental for me, heck yeah Scorpion!
Scorpion is way to underrated!! That was the only coaster at bgt that made me gray out!!!!
I liked it a lot but the helix wrecked my dad’s back and he couldn’t go on any more rides for the rest of the week
Finally you gave some love to I-305. Nice to see it for once lol
Skyrush’s older sibling
Monster at Adventureland is so underrated, so I agree
Also suprised Wild Thing is on here but not Mamba, but I digress
Mamba "trimless" or trimmed down was still really weak
As an ‘old guy’ (63 years) I enjoy marathoning I305. :)
You are much stronger than i am
You've got a year on me, but yeah!
I’m so happy for the love for Adventureland. It’s my home park and it’s never talked about enough. Monster and Dragon Slayer are amazing and love the appreciation for the park. Also great video ❤
Adventureland is also y home park. Monster is defidently one of the most underrated coasters in the country
Same! I honestly believe it’s the most underrated coaster by enthusiasts. I’ve not really met anyone who’s made the trek to Iowa to ride it and been disappointed. More thoosies need to get out here!
With Matugani opening this year, the reasons will double lol
Didn’t expect to see so many Adventureland locals here! Glad to have it as my home park too!
@@craft7185 hi
Adventureland is my home park too. Such a great little park, worked there for a summer and a half back before they changed management and to see the improvement in the park the new management has done has been awesome.
Over the years I’ve concluded that some coasters are just inexplicable. Off the top of my head I have 3: Fury, Hulk and twisted Timbers. Fury left me super underwhelmed after my first ride, yet every single ride after I like it more each time and I don’t get why. Hulk for me went from intense, to eh, to super intense. Again, no idea why. Then twisted Timbers, which it seems gave you the same weird experience. First rides in 2019 I was very impressed. Then we came back after a rain storm and it was flying. Then I returned in 2021 and thought it was even better than the rain rides in 2019. Why? No idea, but I love it. SO out of control, and it feels like my butt almost never hits my seat.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who loved cyclone at wonderland. Floater airtime with NO seatbelt is insane. My favorite ride at wonderland.
Finally Scorpion getting some praise. That thing was really good on both of my rides
I for one absolutely love Griffon at Busch Gardens. First time I went on it in 2021, I was like ok, it’s a B&M dive coaster, a one trick pony as they say. But wow did I have so much fun on it. The air you get off the first drop is amazing and it’s just an all around fun ride
My top 25 is a testament to my age, the fact that I only have 41 credits, and the fact that I haven’t been to most parks in years 😂
25. Gilbeau’s Galaxi - Dixie Landin’

Oh hey your 13 and my 13 match up! Gotta love Titan! :D
Its always good when a big chunk of your list is defunct
Big Thunder Mountain surprised me too this year! Back row, riding by yourself supplies laterals that feel lethal because you slide across the whole seat and it whips you around
Scorpian was AWESOME! I had no expectations and i was surpised by the smoothness.
EDIT: Im going to magic mountain and knotts first week in January!
Alpengeist was definitely a big winner for me. I thought it was fairly uncomfortable back in 2019 but I thought it ran so well this year. Jumped up from my lowest rated invert to the upper half of inverts.
These are all fantastic pics! Great to see these coasters get even more love from you Chris!
You and the fam hit many and thank you for another great year of coasting postings.
4:32 holy crap those people are spinning like CRAZY
Nice video! One coaster that shot up my rankings is Mystic Timbers. It was previously just outside of my top ten, but this year, I got plenty of great rides on it, and it is barely outside of my top 5. It has amazing pacing, it tracks very well, and is an overall awesome woodie. Skyline and GCI knocked it out of the park. Keep up the good work, love your channel!
Now that all the 2022 rankings are finally coming out, I can't wait to see what 2023 brings!
You're absolutely right about the Racer. It was surprisingly one of the best rides of the year for me.
Good video! #1 is an easy pick. It always has seemed like such an awesome ride. Underrated, because of its location
"Reptilian" was my kiddo's first ever front-row ride. He was tall enough, but 6 years old. He loved it and now he's almost tall enough for I-305.
Great video! I enjoyed watching!
I would really enjoy watching a by the numbers video for your top 15 woodies.
Fantastic video as always!
Interesting idea. I did my top 15 by the numbers but just the woodies would be pretty good
A big yes on Cyclone at Wonderland! Glad to see it mentioned here.
I rode Poltergeist yesterday after riding it for the first time this year and being overwhelmed, but I went yesterday with low expectations and was taken aback! Love SFFT! Cliffhanger is an awesome addition.
Love to see the twisted timbers love. It was something special in 2022 and got better with every time I rode it
I love seeing Steel Eel on this list, my favorite coaster in Texas! And regarding some rides that shot up my rankings, those include Raging Bull, Goliath (SFGAm), Gatekeeper, and Sky Rocket (Kennywood)
I don't always agree with your takes but your solid reasoning behind them keeps me coming back. One take I do agree with is Monster at Adventureland. I did a Midwest trip in 2019 and it was the surprise of the trip for me. I only got one ride in on each so this opinion has much to change, but I think I even enjoyed it more than Time Traveler.
great vid! love the content keep posting
Bat (formerly Flight Deck/Top Gun) at Kings Island is the one that moved up the most for me this year. I used to think it was all right, then I had one really bad ride a few years ago that gave me a headache that lasted until the next day. I gave it another chance this year, and now I think that Bat is great and #6 at KI and my #2 or 3 Arrow. (I definitely like Magnum better and maybe like Gemini better depending on the day.)
Happy to see the love for Alpengeist it's easily my favorite coaster in the park and one of my top 5 (an admittedly very short list of credits here).
Ashleigh Elizabeth its not my Favourite in the park but its a good ride i have a gut felling Sophie has an ice cream at the parks 🍦i have beer 🍺
@@timothywait9457 understandable. We all have our favorites. To me there is nothing better than that banking first drop almost tall enough for the coaster to be a Hyper (maybe a hyper looper suspension). Right seat front row is the best for that one. And it's got one of the best cobra rolls I've ever experienced. If it ended right there it would STILL be a fantastic coaster but there is just so much more to experience before the station.
I like how much you’re posting now!
You know what strange coaster made me smile coast rider at Knott's. That stupid wild mouse has some attitude, and my husband's reaction was priceless. He kept saying we are going to fall at each corner I , I was cracking up.
Kingda Ka shot up my ranking. Been on it a few times and didn’t really like it at first. But the more I went on the more I loved it. Love that launch
Really looking forward to seeing Racer again in 2023 when they finish the return run retracking this off-season!
Wild Thing at Valleyfair has shot up in my rankings also. This year the coaster felt like it was going faster through the last few hills after the mid-course break than it did in previous years. Let's just hope it stays that way from now on. Another one that shot up was Cyclops a Mt. Olympus. When I first rode it back in 2008, it was incredibly rough. But after re-riding it just last summer, it was incredibly smooth.
I can't wait for your Top 50 coasters
2 weeks from today
I found myself nodding my head so many times you mention the coaster. I have a lot to say I’ll probably say it later. Lol. I will say I think The Monster an amazing amazing roller coaster! I was also a why is I-305 so popular naysayer… This year I actually put my hands up instead of keeping them down, and I pushed my shoulders against the OTSR and it made such a humongous difference! The ride was actually so enjoyable.
Interesting take on Scorpion and surprised about the I305 take but I respect it tho. I agree Chris Alpengeist this year was on max level the intensity was amazing this year was first ever rides on it got 9 rides max and I was super impressed.
Thanks for coming around on Alpengeist. That ride is a monster beast.
I appreciate the Alpengeist love. The backrow rides are some of the most intense anywhere, especially the first half. And backrow through the Cobra Roll is the most intense, non-launched moment I have ever had on a roller coaster. I am in the minority, but Cobra Rolls are my number one inversion. And i can recognize that Montu is the best inverted in the country, the Alpie Cobra Roll is the best moment on and inverted.
Also, kudos for recognizing InVadr for what it is, a family, wooden coaster with some intensity. It filled a huge gap in the park's lineup, a 46" height requirement for a park that goes from 39" to 48" until InVadr was built. I have found row two, right side offers an almost ejector level pop on the right turn after the drop.
AirtI'm Thrilled that there's a new upload!
Nicely done
Rode monster for the first time this year and have to agree with you. Such an underrated ride. It even topped renegade for me this year. As for dragon slayer, I think it's the perfect length, especially for how intense the flipping is. Also if you can stay late, do it. The light package for monster is comparable to hangtime's.
Absolutely amazing to see a coaster from my home park at #1!
Yo! Super cool to see you came to Cliffs! I live in Albuquerque! The rattler was my first "big" rollercoaster haha
Eyyyyy Reptilian getting some love!
I'm glad to see Cobras Curse in there. I love how that snake talks junk to the riders before you are released down the track. It be like "Cobra's Curse......yo azz is mine bahhhhhh"
Between Monster and the soon-to-open Matugani, Iowa finally has some truly great coasters!
Next time I visit family there, we’re going to Adventureland and Lost Island for sure.
Yeah that was the plan for me this year. Will try and get back there for Matugani
Finally some love for monster!!
Invertigo is so true. It was my 3rd time at KI and brought a buddy who's last park was Astroworld.
I told him this is one of the last credits for me in the park and it shouldn't be too bad.
Boy was a I wrong, that sucker has some positive G's and whip.
We got off, and he's like idk if I can do this all day, and had to tell him that's probably the most intense there.
There's nothing else there that hits the G force quite like it at that park.
yesss respect for alpengeist
For me it was both Raptor and Magnum. Both are now top 50 rides for me, as Raptor was glass smooth this year and super intense, and I got to ride Magnum in the magic seat for the first time
Amazing vid
My friend and I made the trip out to San Antonio this last June. We rode Steel Eel for the first time and o.m.g. I agree it was addictive, especially in the back row. Rode it 4 times 😅 it was a walk on. It was the biggest surprise of the trip
So many of these are great coasters-I’m glad you got some love from them. Monster at Adventureland is my #3 Gerstlauer which is impressive considering how many of them I’ve ridden and it’s in Iowa.
I ❤ Predator and was really impressed with Texas Stingray-as far as Sad SeaWorld goes-I still don’t like Steel Eel. I like Mamba better and Steel Force, and I ❤ Phantom’s Revenge
I rode InvadR for the first time ever this year, and I thought it was fantastic! It felt so intense and it definitely exceeded my expectations! Call me crazy, but I'd say it's my 5th favorite GCI, below Prowler, Mystic Timbers, Renegade, and barely below American Thunder, but above Thunderhead, Kentucky Rumbler, Lightning Racer, Wildcat, and Roar
I visited Six Flags Over Georgia for the first time this year. I was amazed how good Goliath was, and I've ridden a bunch of B&M hypers.
I'm glad you think Twisted Timbers might be a top 10 coaster for you. For me, it's probably at the top. I rode Steel Vengeance on a cold, rainy day, and next time I rode it was in the morning, so maybe that's why. But I've ridden TT several times and it's top tier for me. I'm a junkie for ejector airtime and I can't think of another ride that has tossed me out of my seat like that
W! Will there be a top 100 coaster vid again :)
You on cobras curse:🌪🤪😄
People in the other car: 😳
I love all the virginia coasters btw
Nice video, I haven’t ridden a single coaster on that list but I will soon with Busch gardens Tampa
I visited Busch gardens williamsburg for halloween this year. I agree with Griffon. I got room in the backrow at night. I was floating all the way down 1st drop. When I got off I was thinking I enjoyed it more than pantheon. I actually think verbolten was amazing as well. That park is great!
I know I'm late. Sorry Chris
Most of my rides were new coasters (like at KI) but I did reride the SW/BGT coasters
I only have 2 that shot up:
1. Cobra's Curse - Only rode it once on the first visit, so I have a much better opinion of it now. It's a very good family coaster.
2. Montu - Also only rode it once on the first visit, so I was excited to ride it again with a much better appreciation of intensity, and it delivered.
Coasters that I like better now but didn't really shoot up:
Kraken - It's getting rougher but with a better appreciation of intensity now I like it more for what it is. I would love to ride a smooth Kraken...
Kumba - Killed my head when I first rode it, but I was ready this time. It's quite rough like Kraken but enjoyable as long as you take some Tylenol!
Swamp Thing - I think I just like this better now after riding Flying Ace Aerial Chase. Unlike that one, Swamp Thing doesn't bang your head so it's actually enjoyable.
So during one of our rides on Invertigo this year, a ride op told us that, this year, they are using the original Face/Off train and, next year, they will be switching out to the Stinger train from Dorney Park. She said they switch off every other year and most of the ops feel the Stinger train runs better than the Face/Off one. We had really good (and really forceful) rides this year on a coaster that is often a skip for me at KI, so I am excited to come back next year and see if I notice a difference, positive or negative.
InvadR really surprised me here. That shot way down my rankings. My 2018 rides had very strong airtime, but my 2 rides in summer 2022 had no airtime anywhere, even with it being 97 degrees. You never know how these GCIs will ride.
Goliath at SFOG went way down my list in 2020, because the rattle was unbearable. Last month's rides were not unbearable, but still rough. The floater airtime is good though, easily my # 2 in the park, but a distant 2nd.
I'm glad to hear Monster was your big winner. I have felt for a long time that it's highly underrated.
Goliaths roughness is very unpredictable it seems
6:50 So I rode a clone of this coaster in Italy, Diabolik Invertigo at Movieland Park was indeed very smooth and therefore enjoyable, it was so intense that I blacked out on all my 3 rides TWICE, once in every direction.
Wild Thing made his heart sing and made everything groovy
Always love these videos hope a kings island coaster is on the list
Yep ...times 2
Airtime I love ur vids man, wish you and sophie the best.
Tom Solfaro he bys Sophie an ice cream at the parks and soda i have beer and steak Airtime Thrills man her dad may have beer to
I think the thing that makes Griffon so good is the sharpness of the drop. It doesn’t start leveling off til the bottom which is what gives it so much more airtime and intensity compared to other B&M dives.
I've gotta join you on the Texas Stingray and Steel Eel hype train-- they were running great this year. Steel Eel's pacing in particular has gotten insane, with airtime that's almost punishing.
New Mexico Rattler feels like what GhostRider used to be like before the retrack. I love the unhinged nature of it. I only got one ride on it because if mechanical issues but some of the hills made me feel like I was gonna fall out of the train.
kewl
The parks I plan to visit in 2023. Bgw bgt and sea world San Antonio. Should be a blast! My 6 year old loves invadr we did over 10 cycles when the park was dead
Airtime “I rode it on a hot day” Thrills
Wait, Six Flags did… *theming*?!?!? I’m shocked. Shocked, I tell you!
Also glad to see I-305 moving up your rankings. I know it’s not your thing, but it’s my #2. I also love Alpengeist.
when i get stapled i tend to close my eyes and try to just feel the forces instead of bracing for them, also a little roughness can improve an okay coaster but to much can ruin it its a fine balance
Holy crap it’s that time of year
Yeah the next 3 weeks are gonna be...
THOSE videos
As an Kings Island lover, glad to see The Racer get some respect!
Rode big thunder at magic kingdom just last week and got the front row but somehow was the roughest coaster I’ve been on and gave me a decent headache after only the one ride
Glad to see I305 grow on you some. At 46, I'm still not too old to marathon. I rode it like 7-8 times in a row over the summer 😅
Not sure if it's still my #1 steel, but definitely a top 5 overall for me.
#homeparkbias
7-8 times in a row sounds like a good way to end up in the hospital lol
@@AirtimeThrills You should have seen my friend after we rode I305 11 times in a row opening weekend with the OG hard restraints. His upper torso was literally black and blue.
I love monster. It’s such a great ride.
I got my first rides on twisted timbers this year. Hot busy day in summer. 2 in the back and 1 in the front and it's definitely the most aggressive ejector airtime I've felt. It seriously feels like you never even touch the seat. The pov videos are so deceiving it runs so much faster than I thought
I don't really have a ranking, but if I did, Phantom's Revenge would have shot way up my list. I always liked it, but it's been a few years since the last time I went to Kennywood and I forgot just what an amazing ride it is. I rode it a probably 10 times that day.
Monster looks like a sister coaster to Junker, which kickstarted my own coaster craze. It is just a solid ride in all respects, and offers a bit of everything. I just wish Powerpark was easier to get to.
LETS GOOOOO STEEL EEL IS SO UNDERRATED
I guess the Busch Gardens parks really performed for you this year. I totally agree that Griffon is America's best dive coaster. Sheikra has a slightly cooler setting and Valravn has a better view. But Griffon is just the better ride.
I'm kind of a dork about Cobra's Curse. I adore that ride and it's my second favorite coaster at BGT behind Iron Gwazi. Yes, I rank it above Montu, Kumba and Cheetah Hunt. I love the theming both in the queue and on ride. I love the forward and backward sections as well as the spinning. And it has a freakin' Reticulated Python in the queue! What's not to love?
Yes I love Alpengeist appreciation!
Texas Stingray has a great ending. The drop can be okay in the back but you literally slide down the seat on that drop in the front it’s so slow. I have it just ahead of Apocalypse, and behind Gold Striker and Mystic Timbers.
I’d I imagine without the trim break the last snap on I305 would break you in half. I rank it so highly because it really does feel like a 300 foot Maverick.
I am kinda surprised that mamba at WOF isn’t on here. It was running trimless this year
Yeah Mamba trimless didnt really do it for me. I was pretty disappointed
Honestly, given what was said about Prowler, which is 100% a back row ride, and no Mamba…. First time I’ve disagreed with Chris this much lol
As kings island is my home park, invertgo is one of those coaster me and my friend skips or rides once on a dead day. It is a painful coaster in my opinion lol
Can’t agree more with you about Alpinegeist being a top tier invert. I think it might be that it gets outshined by the other coasters in the park. Or people like to compare it to Montu, which is better to be fair. But none of those should take away from how good Alpengeist is.
At worlds of fun mamba on those end hills seem to be hauling because of the mid course being turned off it hurt my legs on those hills
Based alpengeist opinion
Wonder Woman at fiesta texas shot up my rankings 20 spots the airtime is some of the strongest I’ve experienced and it’s still fun (looking at you magnum) definition of short but sweet
That one went down for me because it's running like crap this year - so rattly
@@AirtimeThrills yeah true but it doesnt hurt the ride for me that much
Every year my family makes a trip to Waldameer, and I swear ravine flyer keeps getting faster each time. I have no idea how, but the pacing issues the coaster had in the 2nd half are gone now. It's my number 5 overall out of my 93 credits
I really really wanna get back to Waldameer. Just cant seem to find my way back there
RFII is underrated for sure. It’s been one of my favorite wooden coasters for years. It’s actually my favorite Gravity Group out of the three I’ve ridden. (The other two are Kentucky Flyer and (gasp) Voyage.) And while Phoenix at Knoebels is my favorite wooden coaster, Mystic Timbers and Ravine Flyer 2 are in a constant battle for second place.
I have a huge tolerance for rough coasters, so I could probably marathon I-305 if I wanted to.
