    Fantastic video! You really help me understand many things about therapy! sometimes there's no time with my therapist, and we can't really get into every subject, or sometimes I forget questions that I have. This is really helpful to understand, and to create specific questions that I can ask during my sessions!

    "Why is therapy so expensive?" Your comments about insurance companies hit a little too close to home! 😂I used to work for a law firm, and we had to work with insurance companies a lot. They totally think they are doctors and try to find ways of avoiding paying for things. (They also don't seem to think mental health issues are that important IMHO.) 🤦🏻‍♀️

    I had a therapist who ignored my anxiety of getting hurt and not being good enough for my boyfriend, which tended to be irrational, because of trauma from a bad relationship, and just went to "Have you tried telling yourself that you trust him?"

      I am so sorry you had to go through that and I understand it must have been hard trusting your therapist to tell them that, I hope you found your way through this....what I would suggest being a student of this field, is to tell your therapist that this exact thing happened and I feel that you ignored me, confront them and if you think that it is not working out you changing the therapist is always an option.... More power to you...

    As of today (1/17/2021) Glassdoor supposedly hasn't had a SINGLE additional individual provide salary information to them. This video was released in Dec. 2019, and still, today, not a single additional person has provided their salary information with Glassdoor, yet the average base pay for a mental health therapist has declined??? This video reports 54,092 @2,793 salaries reported, but as of 1/5/2021, Glassdoor displays mental health therapists as making 48,905 @2,793 salaries reported. Nobody is going to see this comment, so I probably just wasted time writing this, but yeah, that's weird... This is such an overlooked part of this job for undergraduate students who want to pursue this occupation, and when they see it, it can shatter their dreams. For that reason, I am super happy to see you talking numbers. It helps students realize what they're going to make.

    Hi Dr.Ali, love your videos!
    I would love to know if you think space psychology is an achievable goal as a career path? You did a video on the subject some time ago and i really liked the idea of it.
    Unfortunatly i can't seem to find many things online about what studies i should specialize in.
    Thank you for your time and keep up the great videos!

    • @drali

      Thanks for your comment! I think it’s def a possible career path however there aren’t too many jobs available within it. Some of the folks I’ve met doing this work have a background in IO psychology and focus on the team aspect of space flight. Others have a background in human factors and focus more on human/machine interface.

    To this day, l can not figure out why a former friend of mine would refuse therapy and would tell others l will just have my friends help me with all my issues (loss, deaths trauma, self image) my guess is, this person had undiagnosed borderline personality disorder, later in the relationship she started gossiping & making fun or comparison about people. Rather immature l would say. Especially gossiping about people. Sharing confidential information. She didn't validate me or others when suggestions were given about getting help. When l cut the relationship out "l got a letter that she was the victim." I unfortunately can't get closure l felt smoothed and invalidated in the relationship. Only old memories were acknowledged, more then present day. Finally l ended the relationship in anger. We knew each for 40 years plus. I knew that this was relationships was destructive for my own mental & physical wellness l had to move forward if l didn't get angry what choice would l have had. She was pushing me forward to anger.

    Re. the feeling of not being believed-I've found this to be a barrier. Not necessarily not believing me about external events, not believing me in terms of my own experience and my understanding of myself. Presumably they believe that I believe what I'm saying, but I don't think they believe that I am correct-and my best guess is that this is a feature rather than a bug, that therapists aren't "supposed" to take reported self-understanding at face vallue.

    • @aspidoscelis
      @aspidoscelis Год назад

      And presumably many people are going to therapists to gain insights into themselves that they would not have been able to arrive at themselves. Some of us aren't, though.

    If you could go back in time and be in college again, do you think you would pursue the same career?

    • @drali
      @drali  5 лет назад +6

      Great question.
      I have two thoughts on this.
      The first is there’s no doubt that psychology was the right career path for me. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the field. Always have (once I encountered it in college) and always will.
      However, I sometimes wonder if I should have pursued industrial/organizational psychology instead of clinical psychology. IO psychologists focus on supporting teams of people in organizations instead of clinical psychologist who primarily focus on mental illness in individuals. I love IO because the scale of change is bigger. That’s one of the reasons I came to RUclips - big scalable impact appeals to me.
      So yes I’d do psychology again but unsure of the speciality.
