- This is Kacee's first time watching reaction to the movie 'True Lies". Secretly a spy but thought by his family to be a dull salesman, Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is tracking down nuclear missiles in the possession of Islamic jihadist Aziz (Art Malik). Harry's mission is complicated when he realizes his neglected wife, Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis), is contemplating an affair with Simon (Bill Paxton), a used-car salesman who claims he's a spy. When Aziz kidnaps Harry and Helen, the secret agent must save the world and patch up his marriage at the same time.

When Bill Paxton died, Arnold and Jamie Lee Curtis both commented on how talented he was at playing hapless, cringe-inducing, yet utterly hilarious character roles like these. Some actors are just very good at them, and he was one of those.
William Paxton (May 17, 1955 - February 25, 2017) was an American actor & filmmaker. He is known as a leading man for starring in films such as Weird Science (1985), Aliens (1986), Near Dark (1987), Tombstone (1993), True Lies (1994), Apollo 13 (1995), Twister (1996), Titanic (1997), Mighty Joe Young (1998), and A Simple Plan (1998). He later took supporting roles in Edge of Tomorrow (2014), & Nightcrawler (2014).
@@CaddyJimhe also directed and starred in one of my favorite horror films, Frailty (2001)
@@jmarx3943 that's just a description from Wikipedia that I quickly cut and paste
@@CaddyJim I know. Just wanted mention the fact that he directed an excellent horror film. More people should give it a chance.
@@jmarx3943 okay thought you were saying I miss something there's probably lots more he did that was just a description
This is in my top 5 favorite Arnold movies. The scene when she's dancing for him and falls off the bed post was not scripted, and James Cameron loved it, so they kept it in.
Thanks for this tidbit! Its funny now realizing Arnold's instantaneous reaction is because he was really worried.
Arnold is one of the original big action heroes BUT, he also has comedic chops. IDK if you've seen't it yet, but i recommend Kindergarten Cop and Twins.
For real his comedic acting I feel is always underrated maybe that's why he had so many memorable one liners
Everyone thinks Stallone never made a good comedy. People only think of Stop or My Mom Will Shoot. But no remembers how good Oscar was. And it can be argued that Demolition Man is a good to great action comedy like True Lies
@@LukeLovesRose i dont remember Oscar, will have to give it another watch. But yes, Demolition Man had some good comedy too.
Twins. For sure
I love that this both a top tier comedy AND a top tier action flick. My favorite movie growing up.
It's a remake of the french comedy "la totale". And James Cameron kept the comedy aspect (amazing bill Paxton) and added over the top amazing action set pieces making it still to this day one of the best action movies. Also of I am not mistaken it's really Jamie lee Curtis doing the helicopter stunt.
Yes, she kept asking to do a stunt and Cameron finally let her do that one as a birthday present.
25:56 I was 16 when I first saw this movie. This particular scene moved Jamie Lee Curtis into my fantasy file.
IMO, this is the best Arnold movie. Glad you enjoyed it!
The whole movie is magic. Perfect cast, perfect pacing, perfect mix of action and humor, just enough self-awareness.
I love it all, but Tom Arnold rant at the end about being stuck in the van if the best possible ending to that movie
James Cameron is a damn good director. I hear he's kinda of prick but a bad movie that man does not make
Regarding your question about the nuclear bomb detonation (37:56). Light from the explosion could cause flash blindness which would be mostly temporary (up to a few minutes). And depending on distance and blast intensity, watching the explosion could also cause retinal burn--causing small but permanent vision defects.
This is such a classic. One of my favorite action/comedy/spy thrillers. The casting is perfect. All the jokes hit. Just a great fun time watching this. It's one of those timeless movies, that works regardless of what year you watch it.
There are so many great 80s and 90s films. Arnie has a bunch, Terminator being at the top. Sly Stallone has a lot also, Rocky, Rambo, Demolition Man, etc. Jean Claude has some. And that's just action movies. Others like Neverending Story, Rain Man, are amazing. It will be fun to watch this channel grow.
The 80s were the best! Cheesy action movies understood exactly what they were and didn't pretend to be anything else. Prime Arnold Swarzenegger, young Bruce Willis, teenaged Keanu Reaves, Tom Hanks when he did comedies, athletic Kevin Costner, peak Patrick Swayze, Harrison Ford in serious dramas, prime Meg Ryan, pre-implosion Sharon Stone, pre-insane Tom Cruise, peak John Hughes as a director, James Cameron when he made more than one movie every decade. Just an awesome era.
I think Bill Paxton makes this film even better with another great performance as the creepy car salesman.
This was a huge hit back in 1994. It only just now came out on blu-ray last month. I saw this and Speed on the same day at the theater in '94. That was a good day..
This is why Arnold hosting The Apprentice gave me some pause: usually when he says "You're fired!", somebody dies
The young girl who plays dana also plays faith in Buffy
This movie was _incredible,_ but the kinds of things that made it so incredible are _precisely_ the kinds of things, the kinds of big reveals, that preclude the possibility of a sequel. Harry can _only_ reveal that he's a spy to his family _once_ and _that's_ the kind of thing that made this movie such a hit.
James Cameron played the dancing janitor. Arnold’s Kindergarten Cop movie is worth a look.
What's your source for this? I'm not seeing it in the Trivia section on IMDB (which does mention that James Cameron voiced a helicopter pilot in the movie); and in the cast list, my best guess for who this character is (Custodian) is played by someone else.
"It's not a tumor!"
@@TheLouisvilleJedi I don’t recall. I remember it from a couple of decades ago. If it hasn’t been passed down in movie lore it may mean I was mistaken.
The movie is a remake to a french comedy call "La totale" by Claude Zidi. Arnold Schwarzenegger saw it, loved the script and asked to Cameron to do something more "american ".
This is a remake of the French film "La Totale". Besides this, Arnold Schwarzenegger worked with director James Cameron and composer Brad Fidel on The Terminator, Terminator 2 and T2: Battle Across Time. The Netflix series FUBAR, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, has a similar premise to this
You have the best reactions from your adorable laugh to your comments and mostly your respect for classic movies. This is a classic even though you hadn't heard of it. I enjoyed this reaction thoroughly! 10 outta 10!
This movie was the first time that I saw Jamie Lee Curtis and also Eliza Dushku as well. The comedy in here is amazing and Jamie does it so well but then again this was the second comedy movie she got to do and she loved every moment of it as well.
1:42 He was taking a piss on the side of the road. 🤣 And yes, they are spying at the same time.
That Jamie Lee Curtis scene changed me when i was younger.
Weird Science (1985) Comedy, Romance, Sci-fi and has Bill Paxton.
I found out fairly recently that James Cameron essentially did this movie to help Arnold out. Arnold was feeling really down about the reception Last Action Hero (1993) was getting. He had never gotten a bad review and it hurt. He felt it was the end for him. I personally like Last Action Hero; it's so tongue-in-cheek in its commentary on action movies and has lots of cameos and nods to other movies. Nonetheless, when Cameron heard Arnold's feelings about that movie, he created this. It was a resounding success and I guess... the rest is history. I also absolutely adore this movie.
I still love this flick. Such a fun ride. And hats off to the great Bill Paxton. Gone far too soon.
I'm the same age as Paxton. When I heard that he had passed, I was inconsolable. He was such a wonderful person in his characters on-screen and a nice bloke off-screen. I couldn't believe it.
Fun fact:
That used car dealership was located down the street from my grandparents' old house. I recognized the car wash on New York Ave when it first came out.
12:40 "Oh. It was this rush job. They needed these documents down at the district courthouse. And so, of course, the big problem, our _printer_ shut down. So I went to the third floor to use theirs, but they have the 1720. And of course, the disk isn't _formatted_ for the 1720."
No, no, Helen. Rookie mistake. You have to keep your lie _simple._
The daughter in this is a young Eliza Dushku. She was in a classic comedy Bring It On. You may have also seen her on the show Buffy as Faith
She was also on The New Guy and Banshee.
The 80s were the best! Cheesy action movies understood exactly what they were and didn't pretend to be anything else. But "True Lies" was shown in 1994. Idiot.
so a little real world explanation on the runaway Ingram: while the scene where it falls down the steps and shoots all of those terrorists is exaggerated for the sake of Hollywood story crafting, the genesis of that malfunction is based on a real life design flaw in the mac-10. It fires from an open bolt which has to proceed forward to strip off a round from the magazine and then the firing pin causes the round to fire. Unfortunately, enough of a jolt to the reciprocating cocking lever on the top of the weapon can cause the weapon to fire on its own, so that dropping the submachine gun can fairly easily cause an accidental discharge. I suppose the idea behind the stair case shenanigans was that she dropped the weapon and the charging handle was bumped multiple times to keep causing the weapon to fire and at least some of the rounds went in to the area where the terrorists were approaching. The other part of that equation is that the mac-10 has a VERY high cyclic rate, around 1200 rounds a minute, meaning the weapon would most likely be empty halfway down the stairs or even earlier.....TMYK
I think Helen herself getting shot would have been the worst thing that could have happened even worse than the driver of the limo being shot
I remember seeing this in the theater when I was a kid. I had no idea what this movie was about and had never seen a trailer or even heard of it previously. So I went in completely blind and I remember it being an amazing experience especially since I was a big Arnold fan.
Fun fact: the stunt of Helen hanging down from the helicopter was real and done by Jamie Lee Curtis herself. True story. She said that she really wanted to donit herself and talked James Cameron to let her do it till he agreed.
Juno(?) was in Wayne’s World.
Art Malik (the bad guy) was the main character in The Jewel in the Crown. And a supporting character in The Far Pavilions.
38:00 Yres, looking directly in to the flash of a nuclear bomb can at least blind you temporarily .... but if you're not far enough from it, it can blind you permanently.
RIP BILL PAXTON
"What happens if you look at the flash? Can it blind you?"
Definitely.
If you are within about 2 miles, give or take, you will basically be vaporized or incinerated, or so badly burned you'll wish you had been vaporized.
Outside of that, up to 25 miles at night, maybe only 1/3 of that in the day, the light of the flash is so bright it will permanently damage or blind you, depending on whether you're looking directly at it or just looking near it.
Have you ever heard of kids using a magnifying glass on a sunny day to burn ants?
It's basically the same thing where your eyeball is the magnifying glass and your retina is the ant, but the sun is closer and brighter.
Pretty icky to think about, really.
Outside of that distance, you can still suffer minor to serious permanent vision impairment even without being fully blinded.
Think of looking at a camera when they take your picture using flash.
For a moment you see a bright spot in your eyes and it's hard to see much of anything else.
Luckily, that goes away after a few seconds.
Now imagine that it's permanent.
The permanent version is what you get when you look at a nuclear detonation close enough for permanent damage but far enough to not be fully blind.
Still no fun.
One of the few movies I wish had gotten a sequel.
If they did it right, it could be a great TV show. But they'd screw it up, lol.
Fun Fact: So far this is the only movie to feature an actual Harrier (Often erroneously called a Harrier Jump Jet)... This fact could change in the near future as another movie wants to use one...
Everyone is so great in this movie. So much fun! Another Jamie Lee Curtis movie that I really love is Forever Young (1992).
"Last Action Hero" is also starring Arnold. very nice concept. Please consider it. Greetings from Norway.
That movie was the first time I ever saw Charles Dance in a movie. He left an impression.
Behold the late great Bill Paxton, a Jim Cameron regular. It takes an insane amount of charisma to get away with his dialogue. Some of things he says are unspeakable! 😂
One of the guys in the restroom shootout is dressed like the Terminator. The one from the first movie from 1984.
10:56 "Well, like, _actually_ a mystery man, or is this a misunderstanding?"
The mystery man, Simon, is thinking _one_ particular thing, and Harry knows what it is, because he knows how hot Helen really _is._ Helen, though, is thinking something very _different,_ because Harry keeps letting his work get in the way of showing her any _appreciation._
The initial flash of a nuclear blast can be several times brighter than the Sun. If you've ever seen slow motion footage of nuclear blasts, you may have noticed objects in the area instantly start smoking or erupting in flames. That is caused from the heat of the light alone. If you've ever looked at the aftermath of a nuclear blast, you'll see permanent shadows everywhere. The light burns concrete surfaces, leaving outlines of objects that stood between the surfaces and the flash. You shouldn't look at the arc of a welding torch, because it is so bright it can blind you. The brightness of a welding arc pales in comparison to the blinding brilliance of a nuclear blast.
Jamie Lee Curtis was known in Hollyweird as "The Body"
Commando (1985). Peak Arnold.
I remember the scene with her being lifted out of the limo via helicopter was so iconic in 1995, that when she was brought on stage to present an award at the Oscars that year, they had her dropped in from a fake helicopter and fake Harry from above...all very dramatic and exciting that year.
There is a clip of it on RUclips that is easy to find...looking back, it seems rather hokey watching it 28 years later but it seemed kind of cool back then because that movie was such a big hit that year.
Also, yes, if you look directly at a nuclear flash it will cause permanent blindness.
In the beginning of testing the early nukes back in the 40s, the smaller yield devices would cause flash blindness that was not permanent, but would go away after a few minutes.
But the warhead from a Mirv-6 like the one in this movie, with a higher yield of around 50 kilotons, would likely cause permanent blindness if you were to look at the flash.
There really aren't any made these days that are small enough to not cause the condition to be permanent.
This is my wife's favorite Arnold movie. Blowing up parts of the old causeway was a big deal when this was filmed. Although Arnold isn't a comedic actor, he handles these roles just fine. You might want to check out some more of his lighter side.
James Cameron having some proper fun. Jamie Lee Curtis had that classic 90’s Goddess body
I've come to appreciate arnie so much more in recent years. his films are great, and he's a surprisingly good actor. Sure its a bit cheesy, but its always a whole lot of fun.
One of my favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger movies! A Classic!
Competence is better than confidence...
I might be confident I can fly with just my arms, but if I'm not competent, I will die when I hit the ground...
I saw this film in the theater. It was a great experience. Great reaction! 👍🏿
"In Bruges" is a great film. Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Ralph Fiennes.
Three Wizarding World actors
In the Arnold netflix ducuseries Jamie Lee Curtis mentions that Arnold wanted her name on the Marquis when the movie debuted. He is not perfect but Arnold is a class act and a legend
12:30 😟 Whoo. The _tension_ in this _room._ The window's open but I get the impression Dana might _still_ need to step outside.
9:54 - Honorary dad🥇(that's a medal🤷♂)😏.
The horse at 10:35 - "Buddy, I'm the cop who literally is the only reason you have the rest of the movie. I saved your life!"
15:54 "Sure, I got a couple other buyers on the line, but I like your style."
"You definitely do not have any other buyers on the line."
Very astute, Kacee.
As an Argentinean I can tell you that I don't know what the hell they are dancing but that is not Tango lol
The music is a Tango, but the dancing is way different, better and more sexy than that crap they are doing in this movie.
This is the highlight of the action genre of that time lol it defines “action”
Commando definitely
17:33 - The voice from the helicopter is director James Cameron.
This movie is such a classic. Always a good watch when I catch it on tv.
23:52 "Would a spy _pee_ himself? Huh?"
🤔 He might. It could be part of his cover.
Now I dare you to demonstrate the ability to do it ... when you arent scared and dont need to go to the toilet.
*Jamie Lee Curtis* has been topless in other movies but she looks best in this one *IMO* she got her body in top shape
26:08 jajajajajajaja im not wearing……that’s good 😂😂😂😂😂
I bet Anthony hasn't seen either one of these " The Cowboy Way" or " Urban Cowboy"
40:34 Why are there still people doing _work_ in this building? How come a hostage situation on _one_ floor doesn't lead to the entire _building_ being evacuated of all non-emergency _personnel?_
The Long kiss goodnight is a good recommendation w Gina Davis and Samuel l Jackson
Shit True Lies is a certified classic in my household we got a heavy dose of 80s and 90s films especially action and Arnold Stallone Van Damn and Seagal all reigned Supreme here
There are so many guys who are like *Bill Paxton's* character they might not use the undercover agent seemed but they still are a fake facade trying to get the woman hapless characters but it obviously works🤷🏻♂️
Another great one with Arnold is Kindergarten Cop. You really see a different side to what is normally an action hero. It’s funny and has a smart storyline.
9:31 I don't know _what_ Harry was thinking, here.
I learned all about being covert operations from this movie. Rule 1: Draw as much attention to yourself as possible at all times.
The representation of the horse refusing to jump gets horses right. Generally speaking, horses are more sensible than human beings about running into danger.
That's why historical formations like the Napoleonic square would be effective against cavalry. Horses would see scary metal things in front of them and would go: "nope." (Or naaaaigh, in Kacee's formulation.)
Now James Cameron only wants to make water movies. His biggest movies involve water so he’s cashing in
he should have pulled the folding stock down when he handed her that mac10
True Lies is one of the greatest action comedies ever made. This movie proves that James Cameron is not only brilliant but funny too. Its also one of the best spy movies I've ever seen.
This is easily Tom Arnolds best. This is arguably Jamie Lee Curtis at her best. This is definitely one of Arnold Schwarzeneggers best performances. And of course, we will always miss Bill Paxton for roles and performances like this.
Some other Arnold titles you may enjoy too are twins, total recall, commando, and the running man
Yep, before Tom Cruise had a Mission Impossible bathroom fight scene, Schwarzenegger did it first in True Lies, LOL! On the surface, paring Schwarzenegger up with Jamie Lee Curtis does not seem like it would work, but I think it worked. I was pleasantly surprised at the time when I saw this in theaters that Schwarzenegger was able to do suave & sophisticated in a movie. I love this movie, but while I know many people consider True Lies their favorite Schwarzenegger movie, mine is actually Eraser. I think Kacee might really like Kindergarten Cop & Twins, if she has not already seen it. I think a very underrated Stallone movie is "Oscar". I belly-laughed all through it. Jamie Lee Curtis is actually very good in the 90's action movie, Blue Steel.
Some of my most favorite 80's & 90's action movies are Con-Air, The Rock, The Last Boy Scout, TimeCop, Bloodsport, Cyborg, Face/Off, Rapid Fire, Johnny Mnemonic, Drop Zone, Point Break with Keanu Reeves, Rambo franchise, Cobra, Eraser, Enemy of the State, Commando, Raw Deal, Lionheart, Tango & Cash, Cliffhanger, Double Impact, Bad Boys franchise, Over The Top, Total Recall with Schwarzenegger, The Specialist, Lock Up, Stargate, They Live. Dolph Lundgren's "Masters of the Universe" and his version of "The Punisher are guilty pleasures of mine from the 80's.
Not gonna overlook the “neighway” comment 🤣🤣🤣🤣
“I have no idea what this movies about.” Calls it 2 seconds later.
Bird on a wire with Mel Gibson and Goldie hawn 1990
Awesome movie, *awesome* reaction!
Unfortunate the trauma that Eliza Dushku had to endure while making this film.
What happened?
@@jasondavis2995 She got molested by a stunt coordinator and when she told someone about it she "accidentally" broke some ribs while filming a stunt scene.
Mac tens notoriously get stuck firing but even funner fact is that if one of those shells hit her hair it would burn because they spit them out hotter than a semi auto gun. I mean it could have started her hair on fire.
If you enjoyed this movie you will love "Last Action Hero".
True lies is one of the best movies
Did you know that Bill Paxton was in Alien, Predator, and Terminator and was killed by the Alien, Predator, and Terminator
James Cameron is genius through and through
Also: Jamie Lee DANG 😂
If you haven't seen "The Princess Bride" that is one of the best films ever made
I think it's fair to say that Jamie Lee Curtis sold a lotta tickets for this movie...
i'm pretty sure the big guy he fights in the bathroom is used again on the island.
Kacee, you got more respect from me, for dropping a Cowboy Bebop reference!
One of the funniest action comedy movies ever!
There were talks of a Sequel to the movie, but it was cancelled due to the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.
A TV series, based on the movie, premiered on CBS, but was cancelled after 13 episodes.
Watched one episode and it was terrible.
Another excellent 90s comedy is Wayne's World starring Mike Meyers
