My favorite interpretation of the Eroica. Jarvi is just about the only conductor I've found on RUclips who gives the piece the brisk tempi that I think are crucial in order to convey the energy and urgency of the piece. ESPECIALLY in the glorious third movement - I find I'm no longer satisfied unless the third movement is played at least this tempo. Absolutely phenomenal.
Not just the tempi. It's the idea of the internal rhythms...the stressed hemiolas, the inner voices.

he has a sense of tempo for each movement and not just here, see his recording of Saint-Saens organ symphony...a marvelous interpretation of that work.

Exactly. Even the 2nd movement. It’s a funeral (March) so it’s the perfect tempo here.

jarvi know every note, who is supposed to be playing that note, and looks directly at each and every musician as he conducts. that kind of attention to and respect for your musicians will produce a stellar performance almost every time.
I’ve never been able to decide if I like this more than Beethoven’s 6th or 7th and that’s okay because I have time to listen to all of them every day. I’m so glad.

Absolutely true
It's floating in outer space...how on earth haven't people realized this is out of this world yet? The whole cycle, yes! But even #3 alone...the second mov is outrageously brilliant. The tempo...the timpani...the whole damn thing!!!!! I liken Jarvi as the newer Kleiber. Both just "get it" and his skills in conveying to the orchestra are similar.

The coda to the first movement is heaven, especially the cellos and basses towards the end.

Crazy good interpretation obviously. Might even be the best. But the production values of the video itself is also very impressive. I don't think I've ever seen a symphony shot on film this well. Perfect (and musically informed) close-ups. Just enough conductor shots. Incredible work.
39 people declared themselves emperor and Beethoven tore up his dedication of this song to them.
This symphony was first performed in Vienna around 1804 in a small room in front of noble dignitaries. Joseph Haydn heard about the casual premier of this symphony and arrived just as the 4th movement was beginning. He knew right away that Beethovan's style was different and unique. He didn't necessarily like it and actually called it "quite noisy", but he knew that the time had come for change and evolution of orchestral music and he accepted it. He stated that "from this day forward, marks a new beginning".

David Lis exactly! I watched that, and they were amazing actors. They really gave an idea to what the real first rehearsal was like in real life. Now of course in all Beethoven movies everything that happens is stuff that really happened when he was alive so they are very realistic.

The louder drum beating at the part that starts from about 21:50 feels fantastic and I wish they were even louder at least as alternative rendition.

I often get emotionally overwhelmed by the intensity of the development section. It is almost like Beethoven captured God holding man accountable and thus pointing out the incredible suffering of humanity by the hands of mankind and demanding an answer.
The story of Beethoven tearing up the dedication to Napoleon Bonaparte in a rage upon learning that he had crowned himself Emperor may well be apocryphal, but it is clear that Beethoven never forgave Napoleon for doing it; though a more astute political observer might have noted that the French state over which the latter had presided for the previous five years was a republic in name only. Beethoven wouldn't have been the first or last man to have turned a blind eye to a supposed hero's failings until they could no longer be ignored.
I've long imagined that the funeral march in the second movement was for Napoleon himself.
Is that story apocryphal though? We still have the manuscript, which has a hole on the page where Napoleon's name was, because the composer's pen went through the paper as he was scribbling it out. Seems like some pretty ferocious scribbling.

How it must be difficult to rethink and refresh the 200-year old Holy Graal of classical music. But Mr. Jarvi did it! I hear vastness of intellect in every phrase. Some decisions may sound even too alternative but overall it is a master's touch. Simply splendid.

Beethoven Symphony's No. 3, "Eroica" is beautiful. The instruments were skillfully played and the conductor was quite passionate. I didn't think that I would like Beethoven, but I was impressed. It is very relaxing and delightful. Bravo Beethoven!

I really like his interpretation, the second movement was a little to fast for my taste, but i love how he modernized the trumpet line a bit that really stuck out to me.

Yes, yes, yes! Been looking hard for a video featuring the horn-call in the third movement so I can use it for a lecture on the instruments on the orchestra, and this, only this, has the daring energy and excitement and joy that I have been craving! Anything less feels like an offense to Beethoven's music.
fun little detail. I just watched Last Action Hero again and in the scene where Jack Slater's second cousin dies the main motif of the funeral march is quoted in the score

1st movement Tempo is perfect for me. it's not too fast!! beginning tempo is exactly 60.
No. It is not twice that. It's a three quarter beat and Beethoven asks for exactly that tempo. One beat per bar, 60 per minute. So every bar takes a second. And this is exactly what Järvi is conducting.

Al igual que Carlos Klaiber, Paavo Järvi, era hijo de otro buen conducctor de orquesta y desde bebé, habían visto y oido sinfonías y música seria de todas clases desde la cuna. Este director, es simplemente uno de los mejores.
Me gusta su estilo, es diferente a lo que había escuchado hasta ahora con otros. Ha sabido sacarle jugo a esta orquesta.

Excelente orquesta y magistralmente conducida por el maestro Jarvi , solo tengo una inconformidad por la forma del manejo de las cámaras en estos vídeos ya que los cambios tan rápidos que hacen al enfocar cada sección resultan incómodos para disfrutar visualmente de la orquesta, me parece que sería mejor dedicarle algunos segundos más a cada sección instrumental o hacer tomas donde se apreciarán más de una sección a la vez en lugar de hacer movimientos tan rápidos que no nos permite deleitarnos de la gran ejecución de los músicos.
