    I've owned a stock lx 5.0 and own a supercharged 88 convertible GT that made 418whp and 420 torque. With a 5sp this is simply one of the most fun cars ever. It's like your dumb drinking buddy who is always fun to be with. But you need to be an attentive driver and learn the car, but it's easy and cheap to work on. Such a stupid fun car, I've sold my Vette, Camaro, yet keep the Ford.

      the interior soft plastics on these are actually better than many new cars out there..it's pure 80's euro sporty interior, simple and practical, you only need the car sounds and the thrill, nothing else, I got my 92 GT hatchback with no radio, speakers, or anything that I don't actually need, like stupid gimmicks or electronics, if i could I would get rid of more stuff such as the rear seat, some panels, and else..anytime I drive this car, I'm way more happy than driving my 09 GT CS or my 4runner...not because it could be really fast but for the pure raw awesomeness of a true modern muscle car...

  • @FancyAnimal

    These cars are no longer affordable or "dirt cheap." That 92 GT with 120K in that condition will run you $8500-10,500, that is if you can find one. Most have been beat or unintelligently modded. You can add 30% for notch cars and 75% for '93 Cobras. I've owned several of these, and have a mint '89 GT as a daily driver. A good set of front brakes, a solid steering shaft, caster camber plates, and 3.73s is all these cars need to stay relevant. Better buy one soon!

    • @kiroc89
      @kiroc89 6 лет назад

      Fancy Animal man, You’re not kidding. And this is recent too. I sold my mint calypso on black Lx 5spd 5.0 in 2013 for $5500. It was a much nicer car all around than this one. I’ve looked for similar and I can’t touch one for less than $9k now. These guys in their late 30s who wanted these so bad or want another from their youth have some money to play with and don’t care to drop $10k on a halfway decent notch

    My first Mustang was a 91 GT. I loved these cars. The 2 tone were my favorites. Mine was red. It had an automatic transmission. I added a shift kit and it would chirp the tires when it shifted into 2nd. I also added a pair of shorty headers and flowmaster catback exhaust. I also swapped out the stock gears for a 3.73 rear end. I'd like to get my hands on another one of these one day.

    I grew up with Fox Body's and always loved them. I've owned about a dozen of them over the years and have a 93 Cobra currently. Amazing to see this one so unmolested as so many of them are modded these days. I could never leave mine alone frankly - twin turbos and stroked 302 in my Cobra along with plenty of supporting driveline, suspension and brake mods. They are a heck of a car for the money and I love the old school feel. Very cool to see this review among the newer car reviews. Would love to add a new GT350 to the stables.

    Quoth SubaruWRXfan, "It can be a little challenging to drive." I LOL'D at that one. YOU HAVE NO IDEA! :D
    Just a little personal history here. I have owned two of these cars. I owned a 1988 GT (T-Tops) 5 speed with Hurst shifter and a 1989 LX 5.0 also with 5 speed. Pro-Tip, buy the LX 5.0. It is lighter than the GT and looks stealthier other than the 5.0 callout. To say they're challenging to drive would be an understatement. When I bought the 88 GT I did not even know how to drive a stick. Imagine learning stick on a car like that! OY! With no driver aids they make the S2000 seem like a piece of cake. Remember, you've got much more weight on the front end so try pulling those acceleration runs in the rain if you REALLY want to see what a handful these cars were. In the rain they fishtail like a MOFO and god forbid you give it just a little too much gas, WATCH OUT! They were pretty much a white knuckle ride the moment things got wet out. If you can swing it, I strongly recommend you pick one of these up as a second car. They are sketchy in the rain but other than that they are a HOOT to drive!

      +subaruwrxfan I'm 18 and have been daily driving a 1986 5.0 that's a manual since I had my license. My grandpa gave it to me and my dad wasn't very happy about it because he thought I would kill myself in it lol. I learned how to drive it on a field at my grandpas house and the first day I drove it on the road it was raining and fox body's love to kick the back end out especially in rain and I was scared to drive it in the rain for the longest time. But I put new shocks and struts and lowering springs and it helps a lot on backroads. The only problems I've had is the smog pump locked up on me and my ignition control module went out but other than that it has been pretty reliable and a fun car. Also my high school administrators doesn't like how loud it is and they always tried to accuse me for doing burnouts in the parking lot but it was never me. Except twice it was lol. But so far I've never even been pulled over so that's good.

      Almost the same situation here. I bought a 1991 GT new and had only recently learned to drive a stick on an old Civic. I really had no business with something that powerful at the time and picked up a lot of bad manual driving habits as a result. My passengers hated riding with me because of my hard shifts. I developed a really strong left calf muscle pushing in that clutch.

      I had a '91 GT with the auto trans - stock 342 gears & such. If you do get one - get the MSD Cap & Rotor - otherwise you will be changing the cap & rotor A LOT - also go with the 8mm motorsports plug wires. I put in a set of autolite platinum plugs. This car is SO easy to work on. Get the march ram air kit if you get one - and the underdrive pulleys - cheap power add-on that will gain you 25 to 35 HP. I bought an 87 in January of 1987. I was at the dealership looking at an 86 GT, when suddenly the mac haul delivery truck pulled up, and started unloading new 87's off, which I didn't reckonize at first, because of the front euro type headlights. I ask the salesman, is that a Mustang? The first one he pulled off was a Scarlet red LX 5.0, 5 speed, which I still own today, and yes they had 225 horses, and 305 pounds of torque, which today is nothing, but after enduring a decade with slow factory cars, including the Corvettes, this was like Christmas for us car lovers. Never forget the smile it put on my face when I left the dealer, especially paying only $9500, after trading in my tired 81 z/28, and Ford having a 2 thousand dollar rebate, that weekend only. Wow, what a great memory.

    I have a special place in my heart for these. Remember when my aunt bought one brand new convertible. My best friend in high school had one so we had some good times. Best sounding car for the money. They are a handful to drive and they make you feel fast with the flat torque and sound but are not fast and handle like a tank. My CRX with a stock B16 swap would run neck to neck with my buddies 5.0 but when it comes to corners I would leave him. Still love the foxbody GT's!

    • @HerrPoopschitz

      A clutch adjusted that high makes for easier powershifting. No diaphragm press plate is 'heavy'.

    • @tscooter22
      @tscooter22 8 лет назад

      IIRC, my '87 GT's (purchased brand new) stock clutch pedal sat out about 2" farther out than the brake and gas pedal. So, it may have grabbed late, but it felt normal to me. Again, it wasn't stiff by any means.

    • @kenhackney
      @kenhackney 7 лет назад +1

      I dunno, my '92 GT I bought new sure built up my left leg muscles.... But then I was brought up without the 'luxury' of an automatic tranny. Still, that GT is unlike anything I've ever driven with a clutch from 2 wheels up to 18....

  • @bg147

    A 1988 notchback 5.0 was my first new car. I loved it and still miss her. The Chicago winters were brutal with the Goodyear Gatorbacks. Due to slippage in the snow, the car would come to a complete halt if I tried to climb over a hill the height of a thimble. I would simply run red lights to keep the momentum going. It was a different car with Pirelli all -season tires. That was a great car, was pretty much bullet proof as far as dependability, and it was quick. It never struck me as a difficult car to drive. The shifter was notchy but I liked it. It would pull until I would bury the tach, and she would start to flutter and lose power.

      Wheeler Dealers did a FoxBody recently - they were in California and picked one up with little body issues for around $2500 - I agree though that in most parts of the US they've been ragged out and rusted if they haven't they've been turned into drag racers with an LS motor and no interior left. Not "classic" enough for the after market really to pay much attention which means parts prices are nuts.

      +Dylan Dillon Love how many people make themselves look stupid on the internet. if you tried to search for proof on how many Fox body Mustangs worth trade it in in that program you wouldn't be to find it. And you know nothing about Mustangs, racing, drag racing, performance cars, nothing. You have no idea how popular these cars were, and still are, especially in the world of street car drag racing. Fox body Mustangs have always been insanely popular that's why they have the biggest automotive aftermarket of any car ever made. In good condition these cars are worth every penny their owners are asking for. I paid $13k for my '93 GT in 2003, and when I sold it in 2008 I made $5,000 over what I originally paid for it because it was in mint condition with low miles, and I took care of it.

    • @OIR339
      @OIR339 8 лет назад

      42 doesn't round up to 100, it rounds down

    • @mark7067
      @mark7067 8 лет назад +2

      +yaseenshuja1 There's no rule that says you have to round things to the nearest 100, which is why they weren't measuring displacement in CC, they were measuring it in litres, and 4.942L rounds to 5L.

    • @AkioWasRight
      @AkioWasRight 8 лет назад

      ***** Exactly, he's not wrong about 42 rounding down, but its called the "5.0L", not a "5,000cc", and 4.9L rounds up to 5.0L.

      +Chris C so is my C63 Amg that has 6.3 badges all over a 6.3 liter when it displaces only 6,208 cubic centimeters?

    Nice review. I had a 91 Mustang LX 5.0 in the same green. It's funny for me to hear how tough the clutch is and the comparison to newer cars. Back when these were new, they were the best bang for the buck. I paid $13,600 for mine. I drove it as a daily driver and across country on long road trips. I had 5.0 V8 5 spd and 3.08 gears. I would drive it to the track with the A/C on, run 15 second quarter miles all day and drive it home. On the highway I'd get 25 MPG. I miss that car! Thanks for the review.

    I hate the Foxbody and always will. It looks like an economy car. The sound that comes out of it is unnatural. I don't care how popular they're getting, I think they're awful.

      Yes, but being small and lightweight has big advantages for a sports car. Big and blocky might look macho, but something sports car sized like a porsche will always handle better. By the way the original concept of the mustang was to basically drop a strong engine in an economy car.

      +mrsilent3051 I said unnatural because of the way the car looks.

      +Jeff K they didn't go with that though, did they? The first Mustang was muscular, had the looks to match the sound. The Foxbody however...

    In ‘89 I bought my first new car, a ‘90 Mustang GT in cabernet red w/automatic. Six months later I traded it in for a white ‘90 LX 5.0L sedan notchback. Seriously fun cars. Still love the looks and the Capri 5.0L.

    I've been on the fence about buying a Foxbody for several months now! After watching your review several times, I found a 90 GT on Craigslist that caught my eye! I went out and test drove it and ended up buying it! Your reviews do help people make decisions when it comes to buying a car...

    Very clean GT, love the color combo. Not crazy about the exhaust cutouts, but a minor gripe.
