Y'all I am so excited to do my first PSMF today! I am pushing my eating window off towards the close of the day.... I do have 100 pounds to lose and I am currently doing Carnivore since June 3rd, 2024. I also started back to weight lifting 3 times a week. Thanks for all you do!

I was Carnivore for 6 months and only lost 2 pounds following the eat -fatty meat and butter and only count carbs crowd’s advice. I switched to your PSMF plan a few weeks ago and I have lost 8 pounds. I’m a 5’1” 77 year old woman. I needed to lose 20 pounds. I started at 136 pounds. I downloaded Cronometer and I now track everything I put in my mouth. What I discovered immediately was how much I was eating before I started your plan. It was easily twice as much as I’m eating now. And yet I am more satisfied and my food tastes better than it did when I was stuffing my face with high fat meats and butter. However I have tweaked your plan a bit as the weeks have passed. I found it nearly impossible to hit my macros without dairy, so dairy is in except I don’t use butter and I cut my cream down to a teaspoon from a tablespoon as that’s really all I need to cut my coffee’s acidity and guess what? I can actually taste my delicious French roast and not just cream. I drink decaf, but I have ADHD and I need some caffeine midday. I have a Pepsi Zero nearly every day. I also have a glass or two of wine once a week. My weight loss might have been faster without these tweaks but it wouldn’t have been sustainable. As things stand, I’m very happy and having no trouble at all eating this way.
Oh! This was also written about by Dr. Maxwell Stillman in his original Quick Weight Loss Diet (1967). He helped many people reach a healthy weight by encouraging his patients to cut out fat and carbs and focusing on protein.
Dr. Pierre Dukan also wrote about this in The Dukan Diet. He suggests Pure Protein days to help at the beginning of following the Dukan Diet, & to help with a stall.
I just started intermittent fasting, 16/8. Down five pounds in 1 month! I have been keto 3 years now and stalled, so decided on fasting. I have never heard of this, will definitely give it a try. With studies I have read though, I didn't think we lost much muscle mass with water fasting.

Thank you!! It is really just protein with the fat that comes with it. For example, 2 pork chops without eating the visible fat (about 12 ounces of meat total) is 100g protein, no carbs and 35 grams fat which is about perfect. :)
So would this also need to be within a short eating window, like with intermittent fasting, since the example of just 2 pork chops isn't very much food for an entire day?

My highest was nearly 370 lbs. in 2003 at only 5’ 5”. If this works I’ll be ecstatic. Eating high fat is just not allowing me to access my stored fat. I even do 24 hour total fasts (only 0 calorie beverages) a few times a month and still stuck.😕

Ive never heard of these different ways of eating I’m going to try these. Just need to print it out. I’m struggling for some reason and fell off that wagon well and truly so much so I gained about 5 kgs in matter of 3 weeks. I was doing well, did not see much result scale wise but body was changing slowly . I’m finding it hard for some reason to even remotely do a 18hr fast, few weeks ago i did a 93hr fat fast really easy which was my first extended fast. Since then downhill I’m so annoyed with myself now I’m eating to comfort myself. So been binge watching some of your videos today, and got your some of your books so hopefully this will kick me back to where i want to be. Some of the protein is turned into glucose that your body needs. Eating that amount of carbs has the same protein sparing effect. Using protein for glucose does cause more calories to be burned, though. A diet of enough protein to meet your 20-30 grams of actual protein body usage daily (as proven a century ago) along with enough carbs to meet the body's glucose needs, is also a protein sparing modified fast with calorie deficit and body fat burning. Both reduce the autophagy caused by the body's need to recycle nutrients from damaged cells, viruses, etc.

Hello Craig and Maria, what about a man who is just getting over radiation therapy a few weeks ago due to prostate cancer - - can he eat red meat, (fatty steak)? Doctors say red meat is not good for a man with prostate issues - - they should not eat it. What do you say? (Note: Also, man's stomach looks like he's 8 months pregnant.)

Hi, new subscriber. So I read in comments to avoid coffee on days you follow this. Ok... but... Can I use butter or oil to cook in/with? Zero total carbs means you can't even add a dinner salad, a veggie of any type, or even an avocado is that right??
Welcome! If weight loss is the goal, for best results omit all dairy including butter. Use tallow, lard, etc. If you plan to eat zero carb, yes. But as long as you stay to 20g or less total carb that if fine. You can get good macros here: mariamindbodyhealth.com/calculator/
Someone said I would have to buy a book to get my macros for PSMF but funds are not there. I have light activity, a 57 year old woman and weigh 250 lbs and I am 5'5 tall. Can you help me find my PSMF macros for my PSMF days? I surely hope so. I would like to lose close to 3.5 lbs a week at my current weight level.
Ted Naiman and others have said that it's perfectly reasonable to have 1g of protein for every pound of your 'desired' weight; eg. if you want to weigh 120lbs you can have 120g of protein during a PSMF weight loss plan. Some ppl, however, suggest amounts that are too low, causing muscle loss during the diet, so it can be a tough call at times figuring out what level is best for us.
You mention that this isn't something you do every day. Will doing it just one day kick start your weight loss? If not, what do you suggest? ...and I do have your books, but your Keto book explaining the science is my major read these days. It has given me a great understanding why a diabetic, 63 year old woman struggles with weight loss even though sugar is under control. Keep spreading the truth
Doing say 2 days a week is a good way to get things going. More than 2-3 days a week can be tough for most people to maintain (as it is only about 600 calories). Thanks!
What's your thoughts on coffee and PSMF? A 16 oz coffee (with 3 oz Half and Half) gets me through the first half of the day just fine, and in the second half I have my protein. To me, it's a very satisfying lifestyle but I understand the caffeine and dairy is not ideal.

I’m gearing up to do this. I’ve been on lowcarb/high fat and in the darkest keto reading on the urine strips since restarting on 5-3-20. I weighed in the 290’s 🥰in December and lost 30 pre keto, then another 30 since May 3rd and in July lost nothing. I’m 47, think I’m beginning the very start of menopause and I can only do light walking due to having degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, spinal cord compression and being inoperable due to an extremely rare blood clotting disorder. I’m bouncing in the 230’s now and sick of it. I’m researching all I can about PSMF. This is what my Mother and others called “The protein diet” back in the 70’s and 80’s. She’d lose weight eating cottage cheese, chicken, baked fish, tuna & green beans.☺️It worked like a charm.
Nope, GNG is mostly a demand driven process meaning it creates more glucose when glucose gets too low. You have to eat a lot of protein (like 150-200g or more in one meal) to significantly effect blood glucose.
I love a good rib eye steak - but I eat every morsel of it, including the fat. Will that goof me up on a PSMF day? I can totally see doing this if I can eat it all. Thanks. You guys are so darned cute! :-)
HI ! Just wondering what you think about doing this as a variant of ADF (alternate day fasting). Say every other day just having a single steak. Would that work for fat loss?
When weight loss is the goal, we have clients do this instead of fasting longer than 24 hours as we find it is just about as effective and avoids losing lean mass. :)
I started LCHF/NSNG in Sep 2017, and lost 85# by June 2018. Since then, I’ve stalled. In order to lose the last 10-20#s, I’m doing 2 days PSMF -1 day carnivore, but I would like to also take advantage of autophagy (excess skin, etc), so would it be ok to add a 36-42 hour fast in the mix?

I am 264 lbs. I am not losing as much as I was the first three months I was on Keto. How long can I stay on PSMF? I am however noticing I am losing inchs.
I would do PSMF days about 3-4 days a week or so then normal keto weight loss macros the other days. You can continue that until you reach your goals. :)
So, I think I’ve got it. One day no carbs? By elimination that leave fat and protein. More protein than fat by simply eating protein which usually has fat incorporated. In a nut shell, just eat protein.
In general, yes. But for Protein Sparing days, the protein has to be very lean too. So fish, chicken breast, seafood, lean meats like tenderloin, egg whites.
@@MariaEmmerich ahhh….that’s what “sparing” means. In sum, if you’re at a plateau, it’s an idea to go full carnivore, 0 carbs, a couple of days a week as long as the protein doesn’t contain too much fat. For example, filet steak lunch and supper. Not a rib eye steak.
Actually, you can gain weight eating carnivore and many do as they eat too fatty of cuts and many times add dairy resulting in too much fat consumption and they gain weight.

PSMF has been around since at least the 70's. Many old school bodybuilders used this trick to get shredded for contests.

Those are all great options. But if weight loss is a goal then macros matter. So you need to track your amounts.

Hello Craig and Maria, what about a man who is just getting over radiation therapy a few weeks ago due to prostate cancer - - can he eat red meat, (fatty steak)? Welcome! If weight loss is the goal, for best results omit all dairy including butter. Use tallow, lard, etc.

Someone said I would have to buy a book to get my macros for PSMF but funds are not there. I have light activity, a 57 year old woman and weigh 250 lbs and I am 5'5 tall. Is it possible to over consume protein on a PSMF day?
Yes, always possible to overdo anything.
Ted Naiman and others have said that it's perfectly reasonable to have 1g of protein for every pound of your 'desired' weight; eg. if you want to weigh 120lbs you can have 120g of protein during a PSMF weight loss plan. Some ppl, however, suggest amounts that are too low, causing muscle loss during the diet, so it can be a tough call at times figuring out what level is best for us.
You mention that this isn't something you do every day. Will doing it just one day kick start your weight loss? If not, what do you suggest? ...and I do have your books, but your Keto book explaining the science is my major read these days. It has given me a great understanding why a diabetic, 63 year old woman struggles with weight loss even though sugar is under control. Keep spreading the truth
Doing say 2 days a week is a good way to get things going. More than 2-3 days a week can be tough for most people to maintain (as it is only about 600 calories).

Yes, 600-800 or so.
What's your thoughts on coffee and PSMF? A 16 oz coffee (with 3 oz Half and Half) gets me through the first half of the day just fine, and in the second half I have my protein. To me, it's a very satisfying lifestyle but I understand the caffeine and dairy is not ideal.
I find many clients have issues with caffeine and I have them omit it while trying to lose weight. :)

Nope, carbs are not needed. Made from protein and other substrates.
Is Keto the same as Psmf
Keto is more about limiting carbs so you switch your body to primarily fuel on fat. PSMF is a great tool for weight loss and is also ketogenic. :)

I’m gearing up to do this. I’ve been on lowcarb/high fat and in the darkest keto reading on the urine strips since restarting on 5-3-20. I weighed in the 290’s 🥰in December and lost 30 pre keto, then another 30 since May 3rd and in July lost nothing. I’m 47, think I’m beginning the very start of menopause and I can only do light walking due to having degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, spinal cord compression and being inoperable due to an extremely rare blood clotting disorder. I’m bouncing in the 230’s now and sick of it. I’m researching all I can about PSMF. This is what my Mother and others called “The protein diet” back in the 70’s and 80’s. She’d lose weight eating cottage cheese, chicken, baked fish, tuna & green beans.☺️It worked like a charm.

Will the extra protein not gluconeogenesis into glucose?
Nope, GNG is mostly a demand driven process meaning it creates more glucose when glucose gets too low. You have to eat a lot of protein (like 150-200g or more in one meal) to significantly effect blood glucose.
I love a good rib eye steak - but I eat every morsel of it, including the fat. Will that goof me up on a PSMF day? I can totally see doing this if I can eat it all. Thanks. You guys are so darned cute! :-)

When weight loss is the goal, we have clients do this instead of fasting longer than 24 hours as we find it is just about as effective and avoids losing lean mass. :)

I started LCHF/NSNG in Sep 2017, and lost 85# by June 2018. Since then, I’ve stalled. In order to lose the last 10-20#s, I’m doing 2 days PSMF -1 day carnivore, but I would like to also take advantage of autophagy (excess skin, etc), so would it be ok to add a 36-42 hour fast in the mix?
We don't recommend fasting longer than 24 hours. PSMF gives you much of the same benefit without losing lean mass.

I would do PSMF days about 3-4 days a week or so then normal keto weight loss macros the other days. You can continue that until you reach your goals. :)

So, I think I’ve got it. One day no carbs? By elimination that leave fat and protein. More protein than fat by simply eating protein which usually has fat incorporated. In a nut shell, just eat protein.
In general, yes. But for Protein Sparing days, the protein has to be very lean too. So fish, chicken breast, seafood, lean meats like tenderloin, egg whites.
@@MariaEmmerich ahhh….that’s what “sparing” means. In sum, if you’re at a plateau, it’s an idea to go full carnivore, 0 carbs, a couple of days a week as long as the protein doesn’t contain too much fat. For example, filet steak lunch and supper. Not a rib eye steak.
Actually, you can gain weight eating carnivore and many do as they eat too fatty of cuts and many times add dairy resulting in too much fat consumption and they gain weight.
So you need to be keto adapted to do PSMF?
