2011-2020 is what my local hyundai/kai dealer says. For Optima's with the 2.0T Told me that when I took in for recall crap. I have paperwork stating my wifes could have crap left in the crankshaft as well. I've been watching hers like a hawk. Every sunday evening I check the oil. Just like I did on my Beater 35 years ago! LOL! Thankfully its been a decent car and we have kept up the maintenance on it.

I was car shopping yesterday and noticed an orange dipstick on a Tucson but the Sportage still had a yellow, same model year, same engine. Now I know what that means, thank you! The Sportage was a that-day trade in which still had the car seat debris field in the back seat.

i’m not clear. Did they change the oil pans to add capacity, or just change the “full” line on the dipstick so you add a bit more oil to the existing set up?

0:30 "Very small number of engines produced between 2006 and 2012".. wow are you kidding me?
6 years of production is not a small number of engines.
Even 6 months is a lot of engines!

Its actually until 2019 engines- its a much bigger recall now than it was then.

I would like to know that too. Plus the chatter on the sites that allow owners to post problems indicates that the problem applies to more than just 2006-2011. My local third generation shop owner says 2010-2013 models, but I've heard other ranges, up through 2018(?). I just watched a video from a youtuber at a scrapyard who had some journal bearings and pistons and rods to show and tell. (ruclips.net/video/3d_ud6d0omU/видео.html) From what he showed and telled and from some of the astute comments there, and my own early adulthood experience in tearing down engines and rebuilding them, it looks like their are some suspect design and engineering aspects of the engine. Too short a piston for such a long rod? Too much burning on the pistons the scrapyard owner showed, oil blowby and side scraping -- so it looked to me, in my opinion. One commentor mentioned a key indent on the journal bearings could have been better engineered. Currently the recall seems to apply only to the GDI engines, and not the MPI (I might be wrong, on that) and that is because the higher pressures of GDI are an explosive fire risk when the piston or rod fail, and the incident reports indicate that much higher risk. The hybrid has the MPI and much less fires reported.

The Elantra never used the Theta engine family.

The recall is from 2011-2019. 2020 will likely be added next year and most likely 2021, if history is any indication. Document all your services and log and save all your receipts.
Also make sure to fullfil any and all recalls. Be religious about oil changes, and check the oil level as often as you can. Get that break-in oil change ASAP

NO PROBLEMS AT CURRENT TIME OF INSPECTION, THAT DOESNT MEAN THE IN THE FUTURE THE DEBRIS FROM FAULTY MACHINING WONT CAUSE DAMAGE!!!! SOME VEHICLES HAVE 600 MILES AND FAIL CAUSING A FIRE AND SOME HAVE OVER A 100,000,. THERE IS A VIDEO OF A SORENTO WITH 650 MILES THAT BURNED TO THE GROUND AND THEY WERE LUCKY TO BE ALIVE, IF DEBRIS IS IN THE ENGINE IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME

Small number ....yeah right Hyundai is changing thousands of engines at just one dealer I know these engines have been failing since 06, Hyundai is doing nothing for the 06-11 owners. The Metaldyne supplied oil pump balance shaft assembly on the theta engine is of a defective design.

@@jt8280 depends, if you get one that the engine was replaced in and you are not going to put a ton of miles on it then sure, if you are planning on keeping it beyond 80k after the engine swap then it's not a good gamble, but assuming the original engine failed at 80k-120k that puts the car at 160-200k do you intend to keep it that long?

@@jt8280 It is not unreasonable to get 300K miles on the Hyundais -- so a local auto parts distributor told me, and he had a fleet of some hundreds of Accents. The Accent has a different engine, I think, but it shows that Kia and Hyundai have the Toyota level ability or can have it.
