Our USD$ has gotten super stupid worthless. The gallon of paint is still a gallon of paint. Nothing changed there. Barrel of oil is still the same barrel of oil. The USD$ is what is changing.
I had a vermillion red car years ago. Bought a Saleen kit for it, needed the hood and fender painted as well. Took it to a body shop and had it sprayed, looked great under fluorescent lights inside, pull it out in sunlight, looked like a fire truck red. Wasn’t even close. The body shop couldn’t believe it. They didn’t charge me, I took it to another place and had it redone. Turned out perfect. It’s a “tri-stage” paint, difficult to match.
I wonder if that first shop just bought paint based on the code and just sprayed it. I’m not sure what was done when this car was painted. Maybe the owner wanted it to be more of a performance red? It’s definitely a brighter red. It might be cool to park mine next to a factory vermillion red paint car and see the difference.
Back to basics -- clean/flat/polish/buff before trying to match. Never even thought about it -- makes perfect sense. And I was always a "Just paint the entire side guys" kind of guy because my experience of people being able to match paint was never good.
I hadn't realized proper paint jobs had gotten to be so expensive. Informative video.
In the last couple of years the supplies have gotten stupid expensive. It’s crazy.

What paint store do you use?
It's a local store that just got bought out by English Color. Same guys, different name. Just not locally owned anymore. Owners were ready to retire.
