Today, Braille is the universally accepted system of writing for the blind, translated into almost every language in almost every country across the globe. But it didn’t actually start out as a tool for the blind. Jessica Oreck details the surprising wartime origins of Braille.

Things you never want to read in Braille...
*Do Not Touch*
J T R this needs more likes! xD
What's Braille?
A Cat watch. The. Video.
Biohazard
things you never want to read in Braille
you are touching shit
Am I the only one really impressed by the drawing skills and punching all those dimples super accurately from the back side of the paper?
With all due respect, I don't think I buy that. My only idea was that the artist can see the grid through the paper but the camera can't pick that up, so we, as viewers, don't see that aid.
freebirdiii It's animated. Not just the punching. The line drawing et cetera too.
It is animated, put the speed on 0.25 and you can see
Maybe (I really doubt it) the editors just cut the time it takes to draw the letter and skipped it
EtayTheMeower Meow It is not animated..It is all drawn in real time with a camera above clicking one photograph every one second or a fixed time interval..These shots are then arranged together and edited..watch video of MinutePhysics to know more!..It is not animation.
y'all it is like stop motion. Or a time lapse. The person is doing this stuff with a camera that takes a picture at certain intervals. Which is why it looks weird.
Actually this can't EXACTLY be a "Moment of VISION" if you catch my drift.......
GrooviRuvi a moment of touch then? hahah
it was more like Fingerspitzegefühl
It's funny because people who use braille are blind
( ͡⊙ ͜ʖ ͡⊙) Mario Kart 9

This has got to be the shortest Ted Ed video I've ever seen. Doesn't mean it's less informative.
Swetha Coolz it doesn't exactly teach us how Braille was created
Swetha Coolz yes. yes it clearly does mean that.
THE WHOLE VIDEO: It wasn't discreet enough to write or (grammar edit:)shine lights to communicate in the military x number of years ago for nation X's military so x dude invented Braille. Some French dude then standardized it for blind people x years later. Now it's used everywhere.
Now explain one of the paradox videos in around the same (10%+/-) amount of words...
They can go shorter...
"what is the answer to life the universe and everything"
Technically it is less informative because it conveys less information
That´s braillant...
it's a pun
I just gave the 100th like. I feel special.
MMMM cringe-tasticly good pun
The greatness of it is tangible.
( ͡⊙ ͜ʖ ͡⊙) Hole
I thought they'd explain a logic for the dot placements.
....... I didn't get it with the sound off.......
There actually is, all letters are repetitions of letters a-j with additional marks in the bottom two places
Other than w of course, cause it sucks apparently
@@FederalTaxEvader but a-j has no logic behind it. i cannot understand how one can develop a system that is based on randomness
@@fopperer welcome to language script, where everything is seemingly random!
I think this was too short, why not explain the system behind the language and more of how it is used? Is there any logic behind the placement of the dots or are they just random and assigned to be a letter? Delve deeper!
Isterbollen I am legally blind and will be able to answer any questions you may have. The dot system does not really have a cohesive pattern. Each letter gets a different symbol. For example: dot one would mean a, but dot two does not mean b. .One is a,.1, two is B,.1, four is C,.1, four, five is D,.1, five is e, . one, two, four is F,.one, two, four, five is G, . one, two, 5 is h. 2, 4 is i. .2, four, five is j..1, three is kay..One, two, three is l..1, three, four is m. . one, three, four, five is n. . one, three, five is o. . one, two, three, four is p . one, two, three, four, five is q. . one, two, three, five is r .2, three, four is S. .2, three, four, five is t.1, three, six is u. .One, two, three, six is v,.2, four, five, six is w..1, three, four, six is x.1, three, four, five, six is y and one, three, five, six is z. The position of the dots is like a six pack of soda. The three cans on the left vertically are one, two, and three. On the right side or vertically are four, five, and six. Which ever number I mentioned for the letter will be raised to create the symbol for the letter. We also have symbols for punctuation, and we also have 180 contractions, not for words like don't or can't, but as a type of shorthand, look into that one more if you were curious, it's hard to explain here. It's called grade 2 Braille, and because I know someone ignorant is going to ask me, I am typing all of this on my iPad using voice over which is located in settings. Turn it on if you want to see what it's like being me. Go to General, then click accessibility, then voice over. That's how a blind person uses an iPad. I hope this educates some of you.
What interests me more than how you write is how you read RUclips comments. What sort of system do you use? By the way, you are using the word ignorant wrong or rather right. The original usage is just for the lack of knowledge, not for the deliberate rejection of knowledge, the thing it is being used for now. If you meant to say the more insulting connotation, it wouldn't make sense as someone asking you for knowledge is the opposite of rejection of knowledge. If you meant the lack of knowledge, that also doesn't make sense as you should be aware of the insulting way it could be understood. It would have been completely acceptable to use the real word for that condition... curious. So which is it? Were you wrong or... ignorant?
Ladifour I was using the word ignorant as an adjective, as in someone without knowledge is going to comment with something insensitive and therefore insult me. To answer your other question, which I already did answer, I use voice over on my iPad which is located in settings under general and accessibility.
Darth Void I disagree. the placement of the first 10 letters (A-J) is exactly the same as the placement of the next 10 letters (K-T) except with the bottom left dot set. And the same for the next 6 letters, except with both bottom dots set. The only exception to this W, which was inserted later, because W is uncommon in French :)
krozgen well then you know more than me, I'm not French and was forced to learn this.
Why didn't you mention Louis was blind?
Bunny Constantino
Yeah, I thought that was were,
So war really are the times where great inventions emerge.
Eisenheim Illusionist atom bomb, machine guns
World Wide Web, ABS break system, Nylon, Radar.
yeah, peace is boring... let's invade something.... hahhahaa.... HAHAHHAHAHA....

I've always been interested in Braille, especially as a huge percentage of prescription medication here in the UK has Braille on it. I've always been thankful for my eyesight (albeit having to wear glasses), & my hearing (temporary loss for 3 weeks at age 9 due to a build up of pressure in my ears / sinuses, I went completely deaf.. very scary & I still remember it. Made me appreciate it that much more). I did learn very basic sign language after that. I don't think it hurts anyone to learn these on the side - in fact I'd rather have learnt these than another language I have no use for (personally).
Slightly disappointed that I came to a video hoping for more information other than how/where Braille originated. Possible follow up, perhaps?
Thanks :)
Thank you for making this video short and directly to the point.
I enjoyed it. Thank you.
I am impressed, how Jessica (it was her, wasn't she?) has managed to make the bumps on the paper very perfect. And that was when the paper was upside down i.e. without help on where to press except of the paper edges itself!
I finished all the riddles and I'm really excited for more. Please post one tomorrow.
CuriousNoobKid _ thanks! yes I am. you followed me up to here lol do you watch Ted too?
what a brailleiant video
haha
please
sedimental thank you. This was hilarious.
Give me a braille from these puns already
1:26 such a beautiful image
these are my favorite
you should check out the book called: accidents happen: 50 things invented by mistake
maybe those were moments of vision
I could watch you write all day.
Cool and wow the person went all out with this
I love this series
I didn't know this. It's interesting. Thanks
Thank for give me knowledge
I love this. So cool
One of the greatest inventions!
Loved it
Fantastic. Also sad but interesting how war and conflict produce such ingenuity time after time.
The video was so short I thought I skipped forward a second.
braille very important language everybody should learn
Ben Programcıits not a language
this is universal language even before English. So i think we should learn Braille and communicate with that we don'T talk people and understand them:)
yeah it is alphabet but we can define the language different.it is subjective.Alphabet will create language and create friendship.
Ben Programcı I have learnt it
I heard Louis Braille was also an awesome piano player in his church.
Organ too!
Ted can you tell us about the first documented hero and the hero that was documented later but is stated to be born much earlier in the same texts
I was looking forward to this video the. I noticed it was ted-ed and instantly had to check all the information in it as we know how much the love ignoring facts
Moments of Vision... HUEHUEHEUHEUHEHUEHUEUHEHE
Already knew this
The video is too short. Please make one about the life of Louis Braille and how he's tied to this invention.
I've always been interested to found out how it all happened; I became especially interested years ago when I stumbled upon Hellen Keller and her story. All very intriguing...
More like... Moments of *NO VISION*
Ba dum tss
We didn't see that coming...
Watching this just makes me think about how little I do with my brain😩😭😭
now see I never knew this. I never knew it was a war method of communication and THEN used to help the blind.
That's insane 🔥
Post more riddles
........ If "Miss Missy misses Missisippi, then who misses miss Missy? Answer: I "missed" that school day and I never found out the answer.
I couldn't imagine trying to learn to read braille
I guess you could say this was a "brailliant" invention!
Hey, anyone know what tool she's using ?
How can I make subtitle in my mother language to help others watch these videos??
So do they type, so to speak, inversely when their using Braille? Because you would punch the holes from the back, right?
They do type and they have a special machine which changes the altitude of the dots depending on the sentence so that we can read text in the computer. They speak just like normal people.
Balu Andhavarapu so its not done manually anymore? Like everything is done on a computer?
Movindu Dassanayake no, they do write and read books and they also speak manually but there are things for which we need computer like programming so they use computers.
i just watch the ring and this was on my reccomended......
Big applause for this man
HELLO TED -ED
I HAVE TRANSLATE THIS VIDEO INTO " ARABIC LANGUAGE " HOW I CAN CONTACT WITH YOU IN ORDER TO ADD THE TRANSLATION ?
What about numbers? and unicode?
Görme engwelliler icin cok guzel bir buluş,ben de ogrenmek ve okuyup yazabilmek istiyorum
what animating software are they using??.........
That was quick...
was wondering what these dots are on the elevator...
Maybe it is just due to rusting
what about japanese? how do they use braile and match them with the kanji?
DAMNNNNN DANIEL!!!
In a Moment of 'Vision' lol
A classic example of But What Are The Civilian Applications?
yaaas 😍😍😍
i read the book
Why are they precocious?
that's really cool, also shows how the motivation to solve problems in war progress humanity.
its nicer with the cartoon staff
I kinda wonder if this system should've been called the "Barbier-Braille" system. After all it was the former who invented its concept, and the latter found a use.
I thought Braille was invented after Aaron Kyro made his RUclips channel...
This was rather short
cadr003 all videos from this series are pretty short
Does braille (or something similar) also work for Kanji-based languags ?
I think in Chinese they use PīnYīn, which is when you put the Chinese pronunciation of each Hanzí. In Japanese, they have something similar to the alphabet, called a syllabary. In fact they have two syllabaries, Hiragana and Katakana each comprised of the same exact 48 syllable. They probabaly have Braille versions of those and maybe some of the most common Kanji. As for Korean, they don't use Han characters anymore, so Braille would just represent Hangul, which is an alphasyllabary, where you have one set of symbols to represent consonants, and another for vowels. You then combine the two to make one syllable.
Does braille for chinese people work the same way? Or any other language that uses a different writing system.
Jano Rivguz Braille is universal. All countries use the same.
This is visionary...
Jay Wade How is it *vision*ary
I'm just going to say WOOWW :3
Actually, Braille originally had eight holes, but this was later simplified.
In a moment of vision.... Watch
i thought she would explain how they would work
that alphabet writing tho!.. impressed
gobsmacked… thank you...
Beat that Aaron
Uh....maybe you would like to elaborate on that?
the irony of calling this "moment of vision"
Hello!!
Moment of *vision*...
Wow I always thought Braille was invented specifically for the blind.
Does anyone know how I can start learning to read it?
L Saya look at a brail chart, and maybe glue some white rice to paper and close your eyes, and feel it to try and read it
Braincain007 I'll have to try that. Thank you!
L Saya lol, that was just something that popped into my head to simulate bumps. but you're welcome. I've never even tried to learn braille :P
*vision*
who else just kept looking at the hand and did not pay attention to the narrator
Yeah but how the hell do you know what k equals?
Jesus that was short
Hi
oh I thought it was the skateboarding channel
nice but short.....
She messed up the 'f'
The narrator sounded scared
Because Louis Braille would've schooled the narrator. >:]
Danish interesting observation. I didn't detect that. Are you legally blind?
Danish now you say you're right
I need a subtilessss
Why not just have english letters stick out
i typed this using a Braille
Im i the only one who think that Braille stole the captain's Barbier idea and got all the credit?
The other guy's voice would've made this so much more interesting.
never been this early
*Makes video called Moment of Vision*
*It's about something for blind people*
that's it?
That handwriting tho...
