2024 Eclipse: What to expect, from the awe-inspiring to the "very strange"

- On Monday, April 8, a rare total eclipse of the sun will be viewable across a swath of 13 states. Correspondent David Pogue talks with amateur astronomer Ed Ting about what to expect during the minutes of totality; and with Cari White, chairman of the Eclipse Oversight Committee for Jonesboro, Arkansas, where the town is expecting to temporarily double in size due to eclipse tourism traffic.

I live in Waxahachie, TX and was scheduled to deliver for Amazon today. It was overcast cloudy and I clocked in and was told that I'd be on standby, so I was cautiously hopeful. I waited and then got let out before noon. I gunned it home to my parents with a few breaks in the clouds and set up a bluetooth speaker playing Pink Floyd, had a neighborhood friend bike over to my backyard, and after "Eclipse" finished playing at 1:34 P.M. it was just 3 more minutes until the beginning of totality.
It was the most awesome thing I will ever see in my life. 4 minutes of true awe that I probably will never experience again, right over my backyard. I completely understand now why people fly around the world to experience it, it is TRULY AMAZING, and that is an understatement. 😅
The best part is the last 10 seconds looking through the glasses and seeing the light around you dim quickly until it looks like the sky before dawn or after dusk, and to see a black circle block a bright star that you can do absolutely nothing about is something I will never take for granted.
After the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 rolled through Waxahachie in 2021 and now 4 minute totality, I can say without a doubt that I have seen everything (except the northern lights, Starship launch, and the Milkyway Galaxy in person at a certified dark sky location) and can die now, and I wouldn't be upset.
It's like the mountains, unless you've seen it in person, you won't understand until you do, because pictures just DO NOT do it justice at all.
Everyone’s talking about the eclipse today but no one’s talking about how it’s the perfect time to take down the fire nation.
Well you got 5 min
Shucks
Was in Weezer Idaho for the 2017 eclipse with my wife in a field by ourselves. Huge crowd across the street but we had the field to ourselves. Animals went crazy and temp dropped a good 15 degrees. A TRULY UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE. If you are close to a totality zone, don't miss it.
I can't wait!!! I'm in Arkansas in the totality!!!! 🖤🤘🏼
In 2017, we traveled from NM to Orin, WY. We were in a field as well however a lot of people were there.
Get your moonpies ready...and rc cola if in the South
Indianapolis here, path of totality 😁
@@melodyanderson7914 how was your experience? Was it cloudy or cloudless. The bar was set too high for me since in 2017, Orin, Wyoming was cloudless.
I’m in a suburb of Houston, we are expecting 94% coverage. I had a teammate schedule a meeting at the peak eclipse time. I made him push the meeting back 2 hours so we could go outside instead 😊
You did the right thing.

It’s been nearly seven years, and I can still remember going out to the Naper Settlement in Naperville, Illinois, with a group of people watching, and it was one of the best feelings and experiences, in my life. 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞
Truly felt like it was yesterday.
So glad I saw it too.

I live close to popular bluff Missouri and it will be the 2nd total solar eclipse in 7 years. Crazy.

I was going to drive out to see it but due to the thick cloud layer covering every state except Maine it was just too far to drive. I just have to be satisfied with having seen the 2017 eclipse really well.

Total solar eclipse is indescribable, rare, mysteriously beautiful, sacred moment in my lifetime. ❤ from Thailand
In 2017 I lived 30 miles from the total eclipse zone, I was in the 90% zone. I knew there was no way that the few minutes of totality would be worth the hours of traffic, the crowds, and the hours of waiting for it. I stayed home and enjoyed my 90%
You were wrong and wasted a once in a lifetime opportunity
It's like taking a test, you got an A-. Could have been A+.
A foolish Donald Trump tried to look at the one in 2017 with naked eyes. 😂
We now have access to unlimited online and public resources. Even if you’re unable to see this eclipse in person, at 100% totality, there will endless photos and videos of this event. So we all can still enjoy it and observe it, even if we are unable to in person.
@@Sassfire It's not about the eclipse anymore. It's about the humans.
Because of God's AWESOME CREATION!❤
Tomorrow’s forecast: overcast, followed by darkness, followed by several days of powerful thunderstorms. 😕
And a chance of tornadoes forming in the Dallas/Plano area.
In 1979 an eclipse went through Bozeman, Montana. My impresion was it got twilight but not completely. It got strangely quiet. The only sounds were the people. All the wildlife thought it was nighttime. When the Sun came back, so did the sounds. Then all the hype was gone too.
🎶The sun is in tune but the sun is eclipsed by the moon 🌚 🎶

In a heavily foggy day you can clearly see the circumference of the sun and its almost if not perfectly the size of of moon from the human eyes. Its crazy how that works
The crazies are already going crazy.... stories of doom permeate. It's like 'Hey Americans, this happens all over the world at different times'. But the religious headbangers are out saying 'end of days'. My advice, enjoy it and be inspired by the universe.

I'm driving a few hours to go see this, so hype
Twenty-three years ago. New Yorkers got up (it was a beautiful sunny day). They went about their business. (Some went to work, school or just enjoyed a beautiful day with friends). Then the unimaginable happened. The World Trade Center was hit by a terroist attack. Thousands of people lost their lives. Days and weeks later, New Yorkers were told that the air quality was safe. Since that attack, thousands of people have; lost their lives . Due to cancer causing illnesses related to that attack.
Yesterday, we experienced a Solar Eclipse. Free paper eyeglasses were given out at your local library, or on the website. We were told that it was safe to watch the Solar Eclipse; as long as we wear these paper eyeglasses. When will we ever learn. To not trust the vast majority of the media. As a result we may have exposed ourselves to permanent eye damage. Or even future blindness. Was this Solar Eclipse worth possibly having future eye damage or blindness.
I’m so blessed to had moved back home to Indiana this year. We get 3 minutes and 46 seconds of totality.
Wonder how many will be watching it through a phone camera lens so they can post it on social media vs actually just stopping to take it in... they might as well skip the hassle and just watch video.
Ikd... i saw a total ecipse when i was 10 or 11. It seems to me that this is just being over hyped by everyone with schools being closed and states of emergency declared.
i saw my first total solar eclipse on my 18th birthday. i can confirm i did cry lol
I’m right in southern Missouri and will be able to experience this but I’m kinda freaked out!

Everyone needs to stop saying looking at the sun will hurt your eyes. Play Sundays all the time I have 20/20 vision and every time I do it it gives me energy it helps me think better and honestly I'm more enlightened I can literally feel the energy that other people let off. I'm going to challenge you to go outside one day and sit on the grass. Slowly start looking up into the sky until you eventually get right under the sun stay there for about a minute or two and then look directly at the Sun and keep looking until you see the black ring inside the sun once that happens and you're finished yes you will have some spots in your eyes but the only last for about 20 minutes after that you'll notice that you can think better you can see better you you have more energy you're happier all of these things just buy literally looking into the Sun for about 10 minutes.
Try to do that crap on tropical countries lmao 😂
@@rampagepotato4307 well actually, it's a practice that goes back all the way to the Sumerians and possibly even earlier so it can be done anywhere on the face of the earth. Some places do give better results then others but yeah.

It's a great idea to have committees together to organize community events and to help manage the huge surge in tourism these cities are getting because of the eclipse. Which also means major traffic, which means more car accidents which will require urgent emergency responses. The eclipse may be peaceful, but the people will be a handful.
"Space is the place" - Sun Ra 🛸
Can we wear regular sun glasses if we don’t have solar glasses??
Definitely not. If you have access to welders glass that would work but it should be shade #14 at the least. You can also make a viewer out of a shoe box with a pin hole. Good luck, eclipses are incredible but not worth permanent eye damage 👍
"Happy coincidence"?!! How can scientists who know all not marvel and understand there is a God. A God who delights in delighting us with His glorious creation

I have seen extraterrestrials and spacecraft, what do you say to that ?
What's the difference between a god and basic nature running its course?
