This is a great project. I like how you worked out the alternator and all the RC stuff. It just needs more fine control of the steering and it will be perfect
Now this gentleman…. Is true engineering 👍 With that being said, it would have sharper steering if it steered from the rear. Easy for me to say though because I couldn’t have done what you did. Awesome 👏
Just a genius. Great knoledge an re-usauge of recycled parts/motors off other equipment. Keep up the good workmanship,an plse cän u do an show any orher projects u may have done or on goin etc.God bless
You notice there was no grass to mow because he'd been playing with it all day... lol love it building one soon. came across your video after doing research on several others. Good stuff. Quick and dirty. done right. I think I'm going with the H-Block design, but cool to know this stuff too. Maybe use your design to control my switches for emergency off switch to kill engine.... :) always learning
I built a camera pan and tilt using car window motors and found the motors were very easy to control with rc dc speed controllers with reverse. Just like you the motors do not return to a center position but unlike your setup I have variable speed. It works great.
John, great job. I love the front steering, the Alternator and the worm drive on the rear. Great job. I bet the neighbors question this guys "sanity" :-)..
Love it! Love the idea of the wiper motor for steering and welding a pulley to the flywheel to turn the alternator for battery charging. You can also use it for a roll around vehicle jump starter if your car or truck battery is dead. Lol great job.
Hi you made the perfect Fathers day gift..... Rc car and cut the grass everybody wins.... Just remove the handle you dont need it any more...... congratulations
In the description under "Category" it says "Science & Technology". It should be under "Comedy", cuz I've been laughing for about ten minutes straight. Dude, you made my day!
How can you dislike this? Get the steering sorted out, maybe by adding a slower gear ratio, or setting up a revert to neutral circuit. and you have a perfectly good rc machine xD keep building!
The caution I would give is to leave the belt tension on the lose side. Because of the way the engine is oiled if you pull too hard you may accelerate bearing wear. This may also be why it's hard to get started. Now for your next project maybe use the sensors and controller from a robot vacuum cleaner like a roomba, give it perimeters and let it roam around the yard as it wants, then you won't have to have the controller.
Indeed 👍. In the video's notes he said he doesn't have the skill to build an h - bridge motor controller. Maybe he doesn't, IDK. But, he certainly does have enough skill for a project like this! 👏👏👏👏
Ya but he need to buy and actual servo for the front steering wheels so they are always straight and once you turn they always return to center you can get a heavey duty servo for like 30 40 bucks expensive but worth it
Awesome job with this! And from parts you had laying around. I see so many guys building these and spending a couple thousand dollars in the process, and it looks even better, youve got that "ghost rider" effect LOL. Id love to see the looks on peoples faces as they drive by and see that. I commend you on you ingenuity my friend!!!
all your missing is the fluxcapacidder. .. back to the future. .. imagine driving by your house and your controlling this from your front room and nobody sees you. good stuff man its to bad we're far away I have a lawn care business and we have five to ten broken mowers laying around .
Since the steering is just on and off, you should put a gas strut that always brings it back to center, this way your steering will be much more controllable
ive been trying to work out a cheep but powerful motor for the steering servo u saved my headache just need to work out how to run one from a radio control with out using a servo to power switches
step 2 get anatomically correct human skeleton, dress in black Cloak, mount on wheels with hands on mower handle so it looks like the grim reaper mowing the lawn
only thing i would have changed was to trow away the generator and mount a Dynastarter (starter and generator in 1) you will only get about 25AMPS but then you could have eletric start,,and less strain on the small engine,,, but VERY ingeinius work sir! i like how you use standart parts easy to get ahold of, and cheap..,i see ppl building stuff out of brand new parts and the mower ends up costing a fortune,,,
It has a alternator, steering, electronic self propulsion, car battery and a tail light. Still missing an air filter (lol). I like the idea you might try and use a Stator under the flywheel to generate the electricity instead of the alternator and use a lawnmower with self-propulsion built in and use that.
You don't need all that tension on the alternator. It spins freely. Loosen it up some or build a idler pulley that you can disconnect the tension when starting and re engage after start.
this is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. i would however suggest the use of a starter generator from a gas golf cart. will be a little more pricey, but you can then find a way to trigger the starter and kill switch remotely. also would step down to a smaller battery that actually holds a charge.
hi john -thanks for sharing your video - i am also in the process of building me a rc lawmovwer, your is the first model that i have seem that did not used the rear wheel from a power wheel chair motor (which the only place i have found to buy then is on e-bay) i found that your steering system is a very interestedin ideal-(good job on that) i know this is your prototype-i am hoping that you will post more on at a later time-thanks
No need to have servo motors and a drive system Just use rear servos to drive and steer kinda like a skid steer For the front end have swivel wheels and do away with the rack steering system KISS it. I like the alternator good idea.
Cool mod ! what you did . interessting. But the lawn , may be using several dehumidifier running on an other lawnmower and all of the water be used to water the lawn.
Nice work but just get a 15 buck charger and ditch that alternator. Remember a 75 amp alternator takes over 1hp itself. But really good work. Good for you to make it.
You're a genius! This is the only video I've seen of the hundreds that has an alternator and the awesome front end. How did you build the steering? Where do I get the parts? Thanks
The steering is a wiper motor from a S-10, with momentary DPDT switch connected to servos. Just a basic RC controller setup with two servos. As for the supports for the wheels, just some bearing i had, no idea where to get them from. Thanks.
@@Bucklygr 💡 My dad turned 80 a few months ago. I came here looking into the idea of hiring someone to remodel his mower into a remote controlled one, using materials in his garage.... No promises nor commitment implied, just curious; How much generally would you want to be paid for such a job?
so you just cut a hole in the housing of the engine, i was wondering how one would mount an alternator to the engine, ill have to find the old push mowers and see how those are, assuming i can get the other parts AND understand the technical details.
Actually, that style Tecumseh mower engine (and most others for that matter) were/are available with 12 volt electric starters. I know where to get several used starters for Tecumseh and Briggs and Stratton mower/utility engines. You can buy them on Ebay, too. Make sure your flywheel has the gear teeth on it, or you'll need to change the flywheel to one that has the gear teeth.
They now have robot mowers, program them to mow on a set schedule, smart enough to go back to home port if grass is to wet or rain is immanent. WORX, Black & Decker, Husqvarna , all the usual suspects have them now. Starting prices go for about $999.00
Hey all you need is a heading hold gyro on your steering channel and it will center itself after a turn, with NO potentiometer or other feedback. Check my latest RC mower video, it's stupid simple. Pots can't take the vibration of a mower anyway!
my friend is a cable guy ( tv installer ) and the customer refused the TV set to be so low because he had to lift the remote to change the channel... woof woof
where you mount the pulley for the alternator and how. i have 3 remote controlled mowers always having battery problems i have them on my channel one is a riding mower
This is a great project. I like how you worked out the alternator and all the RC stuff. It just needs more fine control of the steering and it will be perfect
You, my friend, are a genius! To take this project from concept to completion is quite remarkable! I hope your employer appreciates your abilities!
Now this gentleman…. Is true engineering 👍

The car alternator strapped to the front!! :'-)) Genius! Love it..
I built a camera pan and tilt using car window motors and found the motors were very easy to control with rc dc speed controllers with reverse. Just like you the motors do not return to a center position but unlike your setup I have variable speed. It works great.
Need two springs to return steering back to center position when release turn switch. Awesome build
John, great job. I love the front steering, the Alternator and the worm drive on the rear. Great job. I bet the neighbors question this guys "sanity" :-)..
This is my home made drive in mower, has 2 x 20 inch cutters, can be removed in minutes, fun to drive & the grand-kids love it.
Lawn-Mower Man would be very proud of you!
Im amazed that little engine runs that gm alternator !!! It takes like 3-5 hp to turn that sucker under load. Especially on a dead battery.
Love it! Love the idea of the wiper motor for steering and welding a pulley to the flywheel to turn the alternator for battery charging. You can also use it for a roll around vehicle jump starter if your car or truck battery is dead. Lol great job.
Brilliant! Only thing it needs is two springs returning the front wheels to center when not receiving a signal. (temporarily on)
one of the best RC mowers I've seen..... great work!
Hi you made the perfect Fathers day gift..... Rc car and cut the grass everybody wins.... Just remove the handle you dont need it any more...... congratulations
Love the front end. All you need now is fuel injection and a turbo charger!
ggin nj better not be a honda joke
OMG! THIS video has made my day. Imagine if it goes out of range in full throttle like a rc car.
In the description under "Category" it says "Science & Technology".
It should be under "Comedy", cuz I've been laughing for about ten minutes straight.

I like your idea. And for the steering you can use a limit switch to stop the motor straight.
the wind is HORRIBLE!!! but really liked your video lots of cool ideas with stuff you can find for low cost thanks for sharing
very nice build. Everything I was looking for all on one machine; learned a ton. thanks soo much for sharing
Ya but he need to buy and actual servo for the front steering wheels so they are always straight and once you turn they always return to center you can get a heavey duty servo for like 30 40 bucks expensive but worth it
now that's sweet... great job on the build!!!
How can someone dislike this video. This is something you can give to a senior citizen to cut grass
Awesome job with this! And from parts you had laying around. That is very neat creation. I like that idea. Some neat enginering.
dude your on to something it's truly awesome awesome job my mate
You don't really need a lawnmower guy, you can just wait for the rest of the grass to die. lol another week should do it. That is one sick lawn.
that would be a blast to play with on hot days. id sit on porch drinking a cold soda and mow my grass lol
amazing good for those hot summer days sit in the shade with a big glass of ice tea
all your missing is the fluxcapacidder. .. back to the future. .. imagine driving by your house and your controlling this from your front room and nobody sees you. good stuff man its to bad we're far away I have a lawn care business and we have five to ten broken mowers laying around .

Too funny I was just saying to my wife yesterday I need to make my lawn mower remote control... awesome!!!!

That's cool as hell brother! good job!
Why not man , I like it ..Thumbs up !!
Cool project. You might want to invest in some remote controlled sprinklers while you're at it. LOL!
this is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
i would however suggest the use of a starter generator from a gas golf cart. will be a little more pricey, but you can then find a way to trigger the starter and kill switch remotely. also would step down to a smaller battery that actually holds a charge.
You are a genius
John Wilson i wouldn't go that far
Nicely done! If you can find a larger pulley for the motor, that would increase the speed.
hi john -thanks for sharing your video - i am also in the process of building me a rc lawmovwer, your is the first model that i have seem that did not used the rear wheel from a power wheel chair motor (which the only place i have found to buy then is on e-bay) i found that your steering system is a very interestedin ideal-(good job on that) i know this is your prototype-i am hoping that you will post more on at a later time-thanks
Man, That thing is super cool! Very well done on your little project :-)
apply milongranite for grass to grow. be generous good luck on a beautiful lawn .
awesome build
Fantastic! Great backyard engineering!
That is pretty awesome, nice job!
Now that's a new age Lawnmower if I've ever seen one LMAO. I want one talking about having fun while mowing the lawn sick.
Nice mower ! You could add an inverter, then you would have a rc generator.
A work of pure genius!
yours looks more heavy duty than my traxxas lawn mower. :)
I love how the stroller is like "nope fuck this shit I'm out"
Bravo. Look at that thing. Mad max mower.
No need to have servo motors and a drive system Just use rear servos to drive and steer kinda like a skid steer For the front end have swivel wheels and do away with the rack steering system KISS it. I like the alternator good idea.
Really like your project its very clever
If be looking threw the front window in the a/c lol this is awesome!
That's damn cool!! I like it.

How much generally would you want to be paid for such a job?
I can tell he got that idea from a 1990's movie " Honey I Shrunk the Kids" Where that guy comes out with the Rc Lawn mower.
H Block. Dual pole- dual throw. + and - are 2 lines that reverse when u hit the switch. Or am I thinking of something else
Very nice love it very much wish I could do something like this some day
so you just cut a hole in the housing of the engine, i was wondering how one would mount an alternator to the engine, ill have to find the old push mowers and see how those are, assuming i can get the other parts AND understand the technical details.
I hope you have a lawn by now.
Great job!! Very nice set up
Alternator are not designed to charge batteries from "stone dead". It's job is to supply all the electrical loads while the engine is running.
Great, However it looks like you need a lawn seeder and water more. I made a log splitter using a riding tractor frame that I should post.
Talk about ingenuity!

if you put a larger cog on the 24v motor and a smaller cog on the drive shaft side. Then this alone should increase the movement speed ?
That's an awesome build i though of this a long time ago whn i was in class
Great MacGyving. I love home built jobs.
I want one!! I have a broken back and it would be a life saver 😇!!

andy but where's the fun in that?
Andy Lupo you sound like a sails man
diamondgod7 You sound like a High School dropout.
No lies Please You sound like a filthy SJW.
you should attach a skeleton to the handle bars with the feet a few inches from the ground and then send it into a cemetery :)
😂😂 Yes!
Cool project dude. Hey your baby is rolling away in the background. Lol.
Keep on man! Great ideas starts like this.
You ever thought of using springs on the steering that's strong enough to pull the wheels back to center but not too strong to fight your wiper motor?
Well in-build ackermann!
Can you guess which was the last piece he added?
Answer? The alternator belt shroud?
Hey all you need is a heading hold gyro on your steering channel and it will center itself after a turn, with NO potentiometer or other feedback. Check my latest RC mower video, it's stupid simple. Pots can't take the vibration of a mower anyway!
that is so cool. add an electric start. and a grass seed spreader :-O
outrigger front single steering wheel for zero turning radius?
Great job man. I can dig it
my friend is a cable guy ( tv installer ) and the customer refused the TV set to be so low because he had to lift the remote to change the channel... woof woof
So did you just wrap the alternator belt around the cooling fins on the flywheel ?
relays aint expensive, air filter is a must, that alternator could soak up the entire engine output
where you mount the pulley for the alternator and how. i have 3 remote controlled mowers always having battery problems i have them on my channel one is a riding mower
can't beat that,,steers damn good
still trying to figure out why you have a revers light on the side of it still cool but why
The light is a charge indicator. If its on, its not charging.
With that many views and you were ahead of your time, I wonder why you didnt engage more to get subscribers and help people build it.
Perhaps he was only interested in pursuing this a a hobby, or a useful home tool.
So resourceful, good job!
How the wiper motor returns in straight position?
I like the idea, but how does it cut grass?
