  • The arena is a dirt oval. The gladiators have a steel-shoe on their boot that keeps them and their motorcycles balanced at high speeds. Every weekend, they travel great distances for the opportunity to pass the checkered flag first. This is flat track motorcycle racing.
Flat track is one of the oldest forms of motorcycle racing and it has a rich history in the United States. Perhaps even more captivating than the bikes and the speeds however, are the people that make up this sport.

If you are tired of primadonna NASCAR drivers, this is the racing you need to see. This is America's gift to the racing world and the competition is intense. There is everything from the guy that hauls his bike in his pickup (as seen in movie) all the way to the factory teams that show up in semi's. There are pro classes and amateur classes, so everyone can find a class to compete in. Don't be surprized how fast the "little" guys go. It's good to see the racers working on their own stuff. Not only does it put the condition of their ride in their hands, it also gives them an appreciation of what they are riding. This is grass roots racing at it's best. Great video, I hope you do more.

I absolutely concur. I first heard of flat track and tt racing reading about it and races in motorcycle mags when King Kenny was the man. I never got the chance to see a race untill the internet and smart phones brought everything to us. I use to love Nascar before it was taken over by " movie stars". Flat track is cool and I plan to go see an actual race.

The reason an old Bultaco is still fast is because the frame dimensions and angles were perfect for flat track. When Doug Schwerma started Champion Frames he patterned them after the Bultaco frame. I know, I was there. I worked at A&A Racing for Mr. Ray Abrams an built parts for all of the TZ750 flat trackers and many other motorcycles for Kenny Roberts, John Gennai, Rick Hocking and many more. I raced a 1973 Yamaha MX250 engine in a Champion Frame. When I tell kids we used to race 4 days a week and our longest drive was 1-1/2 hours to Lodi, they have a hard time believing me. From A&A Racing in Redwood City. Wednesday=short-track at Fremont, 20 minute drive. Friday=TT at Fremont, 20 minute drive. Saturday=TT at Hayward, 15 minute drive. Drive to Lodi after the Hayward race Saturday night, sleep in front of the track and race Lodi TT on Sunday. Worked, raced, ate and made love to my girlfriend. That was pretty much it. Oh yeah, and trying to stay out of jail hanging with Gennai, Hocking, Neil McGregor, Ray Abrams, Bill Butler etc.

When I started racing in AMA District 36 (Central and Northern California) in 1968 Class C dirt track was the most popular bike racing in the country. You could race 3-5 times a week all spring and summer. Then in the early 70's MX exploded and in the mid/late 70's road racing did the same. Over the next couple decades sort of faded but it's great to see it never disappeared. You did a fantastic job with this. You really captured the spirit.

I watched Kenny Roberts at the San Jose Mile as the 4th corner flag man. The TZ750 was unreal, Roberts was trying to ride the groove, but it wasn’t working. He went out into the marbles on the way outside and flat out boogied, it was art in motion.

Great video. My dad (#31N) was a flat tracker on the Kansas circuit back in the 1960s and 70s. Bultaco and Triumph. Hell yeah! He still has his old Bultaco!. Classic! I fondly remember the late Gordon Dusenbery and also Paul Pressgrove whose brother Ken was in the movie 'On Any Sunday' and died in a race not long after it was filmed). So many others. Nothing cooler than nights at the track. Even the smell was special with the 2-stroke engines. Such great memories.

@@evanhsenn - Truth is TRUTH Dude - this is a great film and really captures the spirit of the culture. I've recommended it to lots of people with great feedback. Don't know if you've ever thought of doing a follow up - but that would be great as well. Or even a comparison to the European counterpart (they call it "Speedway"), your take on it would be amazing I'm sure. Maybe someone (@RUclips? @Netflix?) could have you turn it all into a series - you clearly have considerable talent with capturing the vibe and true humanity behind the subject - it would be rad to see lots more motorcycle content from you Dude. Keep on keepin' on - and thanks again for what you've already done.

    I’m 69 years old , and have been on a motorcycle since I was 10 or 11…
There was a motorcycle shop next-door to my grandparents, whom I stayed with at least three or four days out of the week … it was called Harlow Griffiths motorcycle…! Harlow was a flat track racer from way back.. he worked on any motorcycles, but he’s sold almost exclusively British bikes.., Triumph,Norton, BSA, Moto Guzzi, Ducati, and he was our towns bultaco dealer… I have been lucky to hear fantastic stories, and grow up in the Midwest, where motorcycles are way of life… my father rode my mother Road and my grandfather had a motorcycle repair shop…
They are definitely extension of our bodies ..! This was a fantastic down to earth video. I truly enjoyed it….!
I still have three motorcycles in the garage , and I ride all three as much as I possibly can, While I still can….🎶👍🏻🙏🏻

When I saw Rick's Cycle Center mention it made me remember a '67 Norton Atlas i purchased. It was listed as a Dunstall on the N.J. title but I am not sure Dunstall even sold whole bikes at the time. It did have a nickel plated frame, akkront alloy rims, Bauer electronic ignition and polished ports but was a real Frankenstein bike with a sissy bar and longer fork tubes for a semi chopped look. Burned a hole in the piston and i believe Rick's lined me up with a replacement. I think it was a high compression item that was pretty rare.

This is a film about motorcycles but more than that it is a film about passion and joy. The individual stories are compelling and relatable. The cinematography is beautiful and draws the viewer in and sparks emotion. This is aspirational and inspirational, characterized by the messaging of finding something you love and making it a lifelong pursuit. It is pretty clear that Evan found that in both motorcycles and cinematography and it inspires me.

Wow - great film! Flat track racing deserves more attention than it gets! Motorcycle racing is so fun to watch.

This is GREAT! GREAT MUSIC! Saw Morehead against Springsteen in about 86 in Maryland... first time I saw flat track.

Great film! Pitching it in slide-ways is what it's all about.

Really makes me want to attend a race. A nice film about people doing things they love with people they want to be with - boy, do we need a little more of that right now. Thanks for making and sharing this with us.

Loved the movie. I grew up and raced in the 100cc class at the Jeep's club in the mid 60's to early 70's. Brings back a lot of great memories and people I knew. Bill and Marcella and Billy and Gordon Duesenbery, Bobby Chenault, Don Loman, Nancy Loman, Clarence Bash, Frank and Roberta Saylor, and of course, my mom and dad, Sam and Billie McCurley. Thanks Even, for the memories.
