    Hey Pippi! At 9:16 in your video, check out the 2 yellow plastic caps on the top of the fan motor. I believe those are for lubing the bearings in the fan motor. Remove the plastic plugs and put 2-3 drops of 30 weight oil in each hole once a year for full time use. I also put a drop of oil on the fan motor shaft where the fan bolts onto the shaft; which will make it easier to remove the fan blade if necessary. Thanks for all the great video's, and we hope to see you out there! Safe travels!

    Hi Pippi! Congrats on your site and your lifestyle! Great to see you doing all these things and being independent! Hats off to you. Nice video on coil cleaning. Well done! You did a great job on cleaning the coils. One thing that I think was mentioned in the comments - but slightly incorrect were the yellow oil caps on the fan motor. They are oil caps to keep the motor (@ about 25 mins into video) lubricated during use. Coleman units require SAE 20 weight non-detergent oil for lubrication. 3 to 4 drops is the recommended amount to add once per year. Simply remove the yellow caps, add the requisite amount, and then close them backup. Remember to gently wipe the surface of the yellow cap to remove any debris. Don't want to have dirt enter the bearing race! That is an important part of the maintenance of the unit also while you are on the roof. Another tip is there are coil cleaners that you can buy at home stores. Most are pressurized cans and there are two types: one needs to be rinsed and the other can be used but does not require rinsing. If you are short on water or boon-docking you can use the type that does not require rinsing. Simply spray it on, it will foam, and then run down/off the coils. Keep up the great work and contributions!

  • @rickdees251
    @rickdees251 9 лет назад +9

    @ 17:45 and again @ 24:57 you can clearly see two yellow plastic dust plugs on the blower motor. Those are to allow an easy way to oil the bearings for your motor. It would have been good to pull them off and add some oil into the ports. That's why they are there.Those were mud daubers nests but it was already commented on.

    • @PippiPeterson

      Pippi Peterson I'd think that is a good idea. The sooner the better so it gets done and not forgotten. Those bearing do go bad requiring motor replacement and adding oil can really help extend their service life. Cheers Pippi

    • @rickdees251
      @rickdees251 8 лет назад +5

      ***** A few (3) drops of motor oil would work, some WD40 or any machine oil. No need to fill it to the top, just add a few drops.

    most complicated plan to date for removing wasps. 1 add spiders. 2. when spiders have eaten wasp proceed to step 3. add frogs and lizards step 4. When frogs and lizards have eaten the spiders, keep adding crickets to feed them, and they will make sure the wasps always die. final step before selling your camper or r/v you want to make sure your frogs and lizards are out, so add snakes. Happy sales.

    I’ve been watching AC maintenance and cleaning videos getting ready to clean ours. Everyone else is using special cleaners for the condenser and evaporator coils. I love that you use Dawn. We use Dawn for most of the cleaning in our rig, so we already have spray bottle for this.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @kerplunk38880

      WestMountain Adventures There is a reason why you should not be using Dawn and should not be spraying water through the fins. Good luck.

      kerplunk Go on. I’m listing.

    • @kerplunk38880
      @kerplunk38880 5 лет назад

      WestMountain Adventures First of all most people spray water in the wrong direction just as Pippi did in this video. Secondly, if you’re going to make up a solution of your own you should know what it’s purpose is. Dawn is great for cutting grease and oil. It’s not effective at removing organic material from AC fins. Thirdly, just as Pippy did in this video people use too much focused water pressure which ultimately bends the fins even where you cannot see them. If you insist on using a water hose remove the nozzle and let the water gently flow in the correct direction. And just use the spray can with the correct solvent.

    • @single94supra
      @single94supra 5 лет назад

      @@kerplunk38880 Talk about nitpicking.... The thinking that she may have bent a fin using the watering nozzle is just ignorant. Do you realize you have the same type of tube/fin in front of your car? Ever seen a big plastered into it but the fin is still strait? Yea ok, point proven... As for the water direction, sure, one could argue that it should go the other direction so you arent putting the dirt back into the fin but as many as I have done Ive never seen that to be an issue with just a yearly clean.
      As for not spraying dawn, is it the best? Could be, who knows what exactly besides dead skin and dust is on them or if they are quite as effective as a coil cleaner BUT for the price vs cooling difference Id say she made the correct choice....

    • @kerplunk38880
      @kerplunk38880 5 лет назад

      brian clay It is not ignorant. Every single AC manufacturer specifically says not to do this for this precise reason. I would know. I may work for one of them. Please continue to defend the attractive girl, though.

    Great video Pippi, Just a note about the wasps, Those are Mud Daubers. The nests are usually stuffed with a food supply ie spiders. Those suckers can still be alive. The Mud Dauber does not defend it's nest and you really have to mess with them to get them to sting. I have removed their nest with them in it and nothing happened.
    Your A/C unit doesn't seem dirty enough to cause a shutdown.

    Nice job Pippi! As someone who has done AC work for many years, you did all the right maintenance stuff and very well. It's worth noting though, you can usually expect any AC unit to last no longer than 12-15 years, then they need to be completely torn out and replaced. The refrigerant port valves and o-rings get old & leak, you lose refrigerant, and the compressor gets less efficient over time.

    • @LifeIsAJourney4Us

    This video in combination with others is really helping stoke desire in me to get and stay on top of minor maintenance items. A very well done presentation. The comments triggered are very useful as well. The yellow oil caps could likely extend life of a/c units for quite a while. Cleaning, as you demonstrated, essential to efficient operation. I might add there is a temperature differential across evaporator (cold) coil and condenser coil (heat rejecting outside) that is prescribed for units. See mfr data for specifics. An indoor/outdoor thermometer can be used to visualize this. Typically, at least 20F of difference between ingested air and discharge air. Thumbnail figure, see mfr for better data. This is one way to have a bit of insight into quantity of refrigerant inside unit.

    The little yellow plugs in the fan motor can be removed. This reveals the oil ports. Use a good oil to oil the motor. It only takes a few drops in each hole, then reinstall the yellow plugs to keep dirt out. The motor bearings will appreciate it and last longer.

    2 tips -
    1. Keep video much shorter by editing it. This much detail is not needed.
    2. Make sure your hat strings do not trail down like that. Keep them tucked in. Its dangerous to have trailing strings so close to your neck when working on any machinery.

    • @rustyshackleford5809
      @rustyshackleford5809 4 года назад

      Are you being serious about the hat comment? It’s hard to tell with all the ridiculous comments so many people have made on here about falling off the roof and wasps nest when she spent half the video on safety tips

    • @lass-inangeles7564
      @lass-inangeles7564 4 года назад

      @@rustyshackleford5809 Yes, I am extremely serious. Do you ever see a mechanic bending over a car fan belt with a hat and strings dangling from it?
      The AC has a fan. It has blades. You never wear any dangling things in front of fan blades. I see a lot of women trying to look cute on camera while wearing jewelry, loose long hair, hat strings, scarves ... in front of machinery and then spending long segments yakking about safety issues. Most women on RUclips doing DIY are ignoring basic safety themselves. Don't look cute. Be safe. Rule #1.

    to save the pieces from rusting there is a product u can buy it think it's called..corrosion grenade. it's a piece of metal that will get rusty b4 your important parts. you're doing a great job, on the bottom plate of your unit is there a pipe or tube to let the excess water out?

    If your RV ever vibrates when the ac is on, there is probably a mud dauber nest on the fan itself. That happened to me. It had gotten so bad that the entire trailer was actually rockin' and rollin' ! Well, almost. It took me forever to find out what was wrong. I finally found the answer online after searching and searching.The nest was HUGE! I am very nervous when on the RV roof. I actually just crawl around as I get dizzy if I look down! Lol. Good job! A gal can certainly take care of her RV if she has a mind to do so! :)

    Outstanding maintenance work! Very interesting and really enjoyed watching it. Like all other videos related to work on roof top( i.e. solar panels installation, roof repair, insulation.) This one is best among those.
    How often AC require such treatment,
    By the way I'm not able to use my regular account to write comments, like, And watch video ( I forgot password and can't reset that)

    Well done. This is the first one of your videos that I have seen. It doesn't bother me that you are not an A/C expert. More non-experts could save $$ by learning some basic maintenance. For an outside shoot, your picture and sound quality are excellent. The little tips you throw in along the way like lowering the back jacks are very helpful. You also have a charming camera presence which is also a benefit for social media. Keep up the good work.

    Nice job Pippi!!!! Not the easiest or most pleasant job to have to do...But you dealt with it like a pro...By the way those were Mud Dauber (common name I grew up knowing them by) nests and they do not (that I'm aware of) have stingers, or have ever been stung by them in defense of their nests, glad you seemed to have found no actual live paper wasp nests to have to deal with... :-) They can be a little more exciting and dangerous, especially being "Up on the Roof"...Do I hear a classic song and song title, out of this comment? LOL
    Take care, Stay safe, Love Ya and God Bless....Dana~

    The first set of corals they blow the air out that's a cool that and the wasp nest you're referring to or dirt daubers they can do some damage and also I noticed you had a plastic fan need to check and make sure they're not cracked because losing one fan blade well knock it off balance and it'll sound like World War II inside your trailer I know I just happened to me I had to put a new fan blade on six blades fan enjoyed your video very very much hope and hope you have a great great day

    The yellow caps on both ends of the blower motor usually are given a drop or two of straight 30 weight oil under them for the bearings (without detergents)

    Great job...You are a blessed person, every time i watch you fix things, upgrade your floors etc. I say to myself her folks must be so be proud oh her, It's a gift i think. Is there something in your RV that you have had trouble fixing, because I think I have seen you fix most of them. Now question for you, I am new to this, on my new camper trailer, should I check the roof, sidings, etc. at least once a year, even if it's a 2016 model? Some say twice a year, some say once, A guy on youtube said if the camper is brand new, you shouldn't have to worry about that, But I'd rather find out from you, because I've watch you work, and I'm always amazed by the results, If you can, let me know, Be safe out here, May God bless you...

      +Lu Noncent I would say, absolutely. Even just a visual check done yourself is always worth while. The more you know, the stronger you are :D Just cause it's new, doesn't mean it can't get damaged. Best of luck!

    one more thing there is a product at Lowe's called Never wet, it's a 2 part process but once it's on water will run off of it. Water will bead up & run off...it can be applied to anything..plastic, wood, brick, concrete, fabric. nothing sticks not water or mud, great stuff. I've put it on my boots & no mud sticks & it beads water.

    25:30 Compressed air fixes all of your issues.......cleans up everything not to mention it cleans out your fan blades that you couldn't get to with water and you can blow out you electrical coil and remove any excess dust it has accumulated. AIR is all you need to clean a A/C system...leave the hose, the vacuum, and the brushes on the ground.....all you need is a good air pump.

  • @TheFarleyGordon

    great job there Pepe the yellow caps on the motor could of used a shot of oil and they make a product to spray on and clean the coils they would be shining like silver. I bet you have a decreased airflow and that what caused your evaporator to freeze up

    This is a cleaning only inspection and a mechanical check. dont try to troubleshoot internal problems because it takes a trained HVAC tech to run special tests to see if the main components are evaporating and condensing properly. Adding insulatoin to the cooling supply piping to the cooling coil supply side is a good idea. This gives a colder freon supply to the cooling coils, adding efficiency. Also take note of the lack of insulatoin at the unit. It would pay big dividends to pickup some insulating reflective silver HVAC duct material and silver duct tape.= to help attach it to the fan housing in the roof unit under the outside cover. The idea is to reflect heat and retain cooling without impacting the fit and finish of the outside cover.

    Great video Pippi. The "MAGIC" will not happen unless air is moving thru those coils. Cleaning coils can save quite a bit of money on ones electric bill. Good to do on ones car also. The condenser will get full of bugs and other road funk.

  • @Velo1010
    @Velo1010 8 лет назад

    The coils with the fan is called the condenser (changes the gas back to a liquid). The other set of coils is referred to as the evaporator, or evaporator core. That's the part that provides the cold air.

    Nice video Pippi In my state it's vary humid. We get a lot of slimy green and black mold. Real bad trigger of asthma or bronchitis. I also make my own mix for cleaning. Real Pine Sol (not the generic, don't know why but it just doesn't work like the real deal) and a touch of bleach. Wasp here don't like the pine sol smell. I use a regular dish soap and bleach on the inside coil. I also make sure the condensation drain holes are good and clear.

    I just picked up two 'Coleman Mach 3 Plus' units for $100 each. They are in perfect shape, less than a year old. Just needed to take apart and clean out sand dust. An oil company replaces units every year instead of cleaning them. My best Craigslist find so far.
