Wow, glad that John, despite all his virtuosic abilities, is not being an elitist and decides to have fun with a Pharrell song - that showcases his open-mindedness towards all forms of genres and styles. Love him even more after watching this video!
First time I hear John play a pop song. So nice to hear to him sound like a simple human. John do another and complex version. Just for fun with the same great big voice wonderful voice of this lovely miss.
I think that John love all kind of music as long as there is a positive energy and as long as he enjoy it ,he chose this song because of the title Happy and since he is a simply happy person the fun is even more.Thank you for your lovely words Steve Bhowanee :)
John has always been my favorite guitarist since I first discovered "Extrapolation" in a record store when I was a teen. (he actually signed it at a concert with Larry Coryell). Finding this with you is a wonderful surprise. Well done!
Emily Johnson Official Just a note: I'm John's age and was a professional guitarist during the 1970s when John recorded with Miles Davis and was the leader of Mahavishnu Orchestra.........I saw them play a couple of times and was a huge fan of his playing skills. Like him, I've always loved good music and great talent.......you definitely are in that category. I watched his interview talking of you and couldn't agree more. And, when I saw the video of you two playing with the band in a local club.......I was floored with your vocals. Keep up the great work! P.S. Even in my 70s, I still play and, yes, love Pharrell!
When she said "Come on!" at 02:06, I seriously expected John to bust out a monstrous guitar solo, LOL. Anyway, awesome performance! This reminds me of another video where John Petrucci (Dream Theater) is playing rhythm guitar while his daughter sings "Let it go". It's so refreshing to see all these guitar gods playing simple stuff while enjoying themselves.
Thank you so much for this, Emily! I've been a worshipper of John McLaughlin for 3 years now, and I've always seen him as this immaculate technician who can effortlessly fuse various styles of music. But I've never seen him like this before!
Yes it's a truly blessing and he is just "the Light i've been waiting for all of my life" as i sing in the song i dedicate to him.Thank you for the positive words.Best.
So great to see you guys having such fun....Awesome. Thanks for sharing Emily! I went to Newcastle College and I met John when he came to perform with his trio there-inspiring! Send him my best....! Cheers, Rufus
Wow! So refreshing to witness this unusual but powerful collaboration (of McLaughlin) in a pop setting. BUT, then, not usual, due to the legend's renown stature for being a front-runner in Jazz fusion; particularly, Jazz Rock. Pharrell's no.1 hit song is a FUN SONG, and this duet conveys this spirit to all. Thanks, both, for lifting my woes, today!!
What a nieghbourhood you guys must live in! Just checked your live Nice gig- great to hear a powerful clear soulful voice Ill keep my ears open and bid you the best of things ahead. John McLaughlin too many words to say- him and the great Paco De Lucia are leaders masters and are my regular aural food. His Face To Face with Shakti is a regular spiritual bath too. Heres to the real power of youtube!
Dammmmmnnnnnn!!!!!!¡!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That smiling jazzy classic rock blues and folksy guitarist british man is this time really taking it all the way in not only withing his only music, but that black female hottest singer he is really good in playing with.
Feeling very happy (and fortunate) to have chanced upon this delightful collaboration. I look forward to hearing more of you two in such an intimate and relaxed setting!
Maestro playing steel string acoustic after a long time.. I mean he must have played in his home but there is no video after the 80's since he switched to nylon string. If there is any other recent videos of him playing acoustic please give me a link..
good on you emily..I hope to one day meet him again..pass on my regards..I also wrote a song with a verse about my meeting with John some 20 yrs ago when I was 23 and 'searching'.."something Good' was the song and on my YT site. Take care and all the best..Will look forward to hear your song...To help raise conscious levels of others is the greatest gift you can give and John is one of the great givers.
What a great performance! A pair of artists don't necessarily need a stage with a dozen backing musicians to show their skill... Sweet voice, Emily, thank you for sharing :) Oh, and by the way, you don't often hear a guitarist playing a chord progression F-Ab-Eb-Bb on a steel-string acoustic when accompanying a singer. Keys simpler to play are usually chosen, or a capo is used ;)
Thank you for the right words Tomasz Klimkiewicz, we didn't need much to have fun and it's always like that when we meet. thank you for sharing your thoughts with me.
John is a legend, Emily, did you check his 'Friday night in San Francisco' with Paco De Lucia? Which of his music is your favourite.? His older work was his best. Emily thanks for jamming with him! John values every music genres and you are a very soulful singer.
Yes indeed Gabriel Tarditi Fridai night in San Francisco is exceptional and i love it as all the music of John. Thank you for your comment Gabriel Tarditi.
I totally agree with you Emanual0607 He is Legend in the music but also in Life !!! Great to hear you are also guitarist, hope to hear you playing one day :)
JM was always a fabulous 'anything' player. Had the pleasure of meeting him in 1999 in New Haven CT after a Shakti Concert. Such beautiful music... and a wonderful human being.
It's worth to do it for the people who get the why because that's how we spread more positive energy and i'm happy that you are one of them Joshua Thorington.Thank you.
@@kevinelliott5823 orchestration of the groove in the verse, John isn't comping the groove straight like the produced track, also the reharmonization of the chorus and bridge, the way john starts playing the beat with more emphasis on two in the last chorus. it was four years ago when i wrote that so no need to look into it too much.
Sergio Adami He must have been saying to himself, this is the progression I'd use for a 2 second transition in my song. But let's not hurt the kid's feelings.
lol :-) there's an interview or something here on youtube (on Emily's channel?) - I think they just happen to know each other, like neighbors, or so. which led to the situation that Emily had something like a wedding gig - and John just helped out, gave a couple of old friends a phonecall. her band that night ended up being John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, ... 8-D (or so, I don't remember the exact names.)
SAM SMITH I don't necessarily understand this criticism. How is a musician that uses chords that aren't conventional in popular forms of music pretentious? Why is using one set of notes over another pretentious?

We have to go back to 1961, John was the session man in New Vaudeville Band - Winchester Cathedral!
Here is John on Gordon Beck's great album Experiments with Pops doing Norwegian Wood in 1969.

As far as McLaughlin playing popsongs: There are some great old songs from the early 60-tees with Duffy Power. You can find them on RUclips.
yes .... a pleasure to hear john like a simple human; he is so exceptional
So, when I see a video with John McLaughlin and improvisation in the title, this was not what I was expecting. Awesome.
Great stuff, funny though to see John playing basic barr chords, I mean check out his Paco de Lucia stuff!!! He looks ridiculously good for 75!
Wow! Great rapport and vibe here. Terrific singing. Cool to hear John keeping it simple, like some hip guy playing a few numbers at a house party.
Thank you for your lovely comment Philip Bellew
John has always been my favorite guitarist since I first discovered "Extrapolation" in a record store when I was a teen. (he actually signed it at a concert with Larry Coryell). Finding this with you is a wonderful surprise. Well done!

Positivity brings positivity ,Tnx Emanual0607 :)
Emily Johnson Official You're Welcome, I love your voice. I'm also a 🎸 (guitarist) and I've studied John's technique since 1972. He's a legend.
I totally agree with you Emanual0607 He is Legend in the music but also in Life !!! Great to hear you are also guitarist, hope to hear you playing one day :)
So fresh and groovy!
Thank you Theosis78 it's all about the fun.
Great job both
Id LOVE to see/hear him rip over those chords.
Nunca había visto a John tan contento
Superbe les deux Émilie un amour 💘
2:36 a flash of mahavishnu! :-)
She's got a fabulous voice
Awesome!!! Thanks!
Wonderful!
JM always was a fabulous rhythm player ...
I absolutely agree with you Jack O'Nada, tnx for the comment .
JM was always a fabulous 'anything' player.
Had the pleasure of meeting him in 1999 in New Haven CT after a Shakti Concert. Such beautiful music... and a wonderful human being.
Jhon thé best guitare player ever World Seen
when the song is good ...everything is possible
i like how her grandfather plays them powerchordsz!!! go dadio
It's interesting as hell watching this, because it's clearly breaking all the rules. People who talk bad about it just don't get the why.
It's worth to do it for the people who get the why because that's how we spread more positive energy and i'm happy that you are one of them Joshua Thorington.Thank you.
What rules are being broken? 🤔
McLaughlin playing power chords !!! Must have been hard for him to play such a simple part, lol.
Grande John!!!
Joy Peace and Love. .. ☺😊😀/❤💙💚/✌👍👌👏
Makes me happy too.
John can sing too! Sexy duo!!! Didn't know you dumbed it down so good John
Happy musicians
indeed :)
The only musician I truly worship since 1973 is John McLaughlin.
Love you BB! ♥
Wow!!!😎😎😎
I wonder if John had to resource on google to find the chords of the song :)
He probably heard it on the radio a few times and knew the chords right away
the tough part was when he had to transpose the chords as she is singing in a different tonality
Sergio Adami not tough at all for this guy lol
Sergio Adami He must have been saying to himself, this is the progression I'd use for a 2 second transition in my song. But let's not hurt the kid's feelings.
Abrar Jahin Nafi I wonder if he felt strange to just play full chords and not triads with 9b 11#
I always had the feeling over the years, that John Mclaughlin was the same age.
Love🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌷💝😘
Uh ... can we have about another 15 minutes of this????
we were just having some fun :) sorry we didn't record the rest :)
I wonder if John is in a wedding band
awesome :)
Aweshum 😎
❤
E.J & J.M. - Yes, it works very well indeed.
une belle rencontre
i heard he reside in Monaco
❤️🎶❤️🎵❤️👍🏻❤️
She's great actually .
❤️❤️❤️❤️😍😍😍👍🏻💪
I'd say John is slightly overqualified for this gig.
lol :-)
there's an interview or something here on youtube (on Emily's channel?) - I think they just happen to know each other, like neighbors, or so. which led to the situation that Emily had something like a wedding gig - and John just helped out, gave a couple of old friends a phonecall. her band that night ended up being John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, ... 8-D (or so, I don't remember the exact names.)
Just think if they were both performing the same song!
he's trying so hard to make it harmonically interesting...i'm sure this is not what he listens to.. such a sport.. great job by Emily too...
Actually John love that song because of the word "Happy" but yes it's not a type of music he listen :) Tnx for the sweet words Fake Pianist :)
OK, what's the name of the song?
Mahavishnu orchestra!!
bonheur
Merci .
:D
well he's playing it all wrong
Improv? That's the song Happy....
FORGET IT !!!!
His BVs need work... seems OK on guitar. Has he been playing long?
😶😶😶
surprising from the nerd himself
She sounded great. Not a big fan of JM's out chords and some of his dischordant choices...too pretentious for my taste.
SAM SMITH
I don't necessarily understand this criticism. How is a musician that uses chords that aren't conventional in popular forms of music pretentious? Why is using one set of notes over another pretentious?
Who Ami? A nobody... But that rhythm should have been played w all downstrokes .. Who the hell am I? I told you... a no one .
Well all: no tune, no hook. Too many 9th cords which does not work and Emily is not important.
