Listening is the difference between everyone playing at the same time, and everyone playing together. There are a few bands who's members were all good listeners. RTF was one of the very best. The Allman Brothers Band was another.
It’s amazing how many critics there are who think they can talk trash about two of the giants of the last 50+ years of modern jazz. They were good enough to play on groundbreaking albums by Miles, and carry onward and upward after for decades.
Thank you for the posting. I have loved Chick and McLaughlin ever since I first heard their music in the late 70s. This video is the first time I've seen them playing together. Heaven! I guess Chick's wife Gayle Moran sang and played keyboard with the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early 70s. These guys have helped make life good.
Amazing that this two immensely talented musicians that used to play for huge crowds played for a small crowd in a little corner of record and book store of old. Too bad those kind of places and events are almost extinct. I bet there was not rehearsal for this gig or promo event. you can tell they just played by feel and instinct.
Я искренне согласен! К сожалению, вы знаете, что насилие, совершаемое над бедным украинским народом, является чистым злом со стороны ваших так называемых лидеров... да?
Haha, are you kidding? What a funny thing to say. He's recorded with Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, Tony Williams, Larry Young, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Joey deFrancesco, John Surman, Sonny Sharrock... the list goes on and on.
@@MarkJKLawrence his stuff with Miles was all much more fusion-y. His stuff with Elvin shows him being out of place. Ive heard enough of him to be assured in my opinion. WHile I like his burning fusion sound, and his chilled out indian vibe, his regular jazz sound always sounds like he doesnt really know what to do.
He's got all the languages. You should listen to his early recordings (with DANNY THOMPSON e.g playing some Bird's tunes and other be bop stuff.)Later he developed his own style .Unique.
Thats a pretty arrogant thing to say about such a legend: though I understand what you say; he does not sound like a typical trad jazz guitar player mostly because hes got so much more in his arsenal and in his self expression than almost anyone. Playing pure trad jazz would bore him and it would restrict him to a genre label style, which is the opposite of what makes him so great; jazz is meant to be a live and growing music, by definition; playing a restricted (even though vast technique is needed) style to reproduce what was 70 years ago is not jazz its copy and its not alive; John has always been ground breaking because his style is alive and searching. He has more chops and harmony than most people. In fact he played that way (jazz) when he was in his 20s; then evolved way beyond the traditional jazz sound. Your opinion is bigger than your knowledge it would seem: check out someone like Jens Larsen who is a jazz teacher - he broke down one of John tracks once, though he is no Mclaughlin fan by his own admission: by the end of the jazz breakdown he was in awe of johns jazz technique
So much amazing talent in one small corner of a record store...
Mind-blowing
Two giants of jazz in an unusually intimate setting. What a dream come true!
Never cease to be awed by these two masters.R.I.P Chick Corea sadly missed
There is no doubt that Chick and John are incredible players but they are also great listeners. The interplay between the two is incredible.

Beautiful 💜
What a testament to Monk’s timeless stature by these great musicians.
Out of this World. RIP Chick

'Apocalypse' Jean Luc Ponty is on that album as well, 'Smile of the Beyond' what a tune. A desert Island disc for me.

The best
Two of the Best in Jazz World 🌎 listen to play on complements....
These two were the most influential figures in the modern jazz movement of the 70s….
They were the snarky puppy of the days of old.
Yes : )
Beauty
Thelonious Monk, de onde estiver, está curtindo muito isso com certeza.
Абсолютное волшебство
Я искренне согласен!

Thiago Mingues agreed!
Due così insieme capita raramente

Chick could blow anyone’s mind anytime.

I have seen John Mc live but never Chick, he will be missed. Likewise Miles.

Indeed, unfortunately
Два великих разказчика!
абсолютно!
Hi Mark it's Jack, Luke's friend. Was this celebrating a anniversary of Monk? Great video thanks for uploading it.
Hi Jack, hope all's well! It appears they were playing together at the Blue Note in Tokyo - at that time they were on the 'Five Peace Band' tour.
San Martin y Belgrano.
Simón Bolívar y Antonio José de Sucre
RIP Chick
Round midnight
What kind of guitar is he playing?
It's a Godin Freeway SA
It's an electric one silly!
😆 😎😘❤💥🏜🏖✈
Was this at a bookstore?
HMV is mainly a record store, in the UK at least, but they also have books etc.
HMV also had stores in the USA. For instance the had a large store in Boston on Mass Ave and Newbury Street just down from Berklee
Not bad.
Chick playn on a digital piano? WTF?!!!
never saw Chick Corea look like this; a bit chubby, makes him look a completely different person
Too bad Chick didn't play this on a grand piano.
Stop with the whammy business. It sounds like a warped record.
You can tell Chick hates Al Di meola lol. John has Grace and Feel!
Chick was not a hater.
Version sans âme : juste des effets virtuoses à l'extrême. Très décevant de la part de si grands musiciens
Great artistry but the piano is tinny.
I love John in Mahavishnu, and return to Shakti, but I dont relaly think he's got basic jazz chops

Yes, exactly. He's gone far beyond his roots. Check this out bigozine2.com/roio/?p=2309
