    Amazing..... I saw him open for Chicago at Carnegie Hall with the Mahavishnu Orchestra.....a friend was into Chicago so he dragged me along...... I couldn't believe my ears when John and the band starting playing .....amazing then and still an amazing musician.... I always wondered what Chicago thought having them open for them......must have been a little intimidating..... Billy Cobham was on drums..... I'm 70 and still remember that night quite vividly..... I had no idea who they were and was totally mesmerized

    • @briandillon8041
      @briandillon8041 8 месяцев назад

      You didn’t say what year you saw them. Judging by your age I would say it was the early 70s which was a good lineup of Chicago. And Danny saffron could hold his own with any drummer. Although Billy Cobham was quite some thing. Terry Kath could play circles around McLaughlin if you ask me.

    To this day, I still remember seeing Mahuvishnu Orchestra in 1971 at the Villanova Fieldhouse when they were the opening act for The Guess Who. I was so totally blown away I wanted to quit playing guitar. We stayed for two songs by the main act and left……….nothing could surpass what we saw and heard from MO! It changed my approach to guitar playing forever.

      It’s a shame you didn’t stick around for The Guess Who, because Randy Bachman was their lead guitarist and he is no slouch.

    • @MarkTarmannPianoCheck_it_out
      @MarkTarmannPianoCheck_it_out 3 года назад +5

      @@regmuir2872 he did say they gave them a 2 song audition before saying "nah" and splitting. Bachman has taste, but he was never going to overwhelmingly impact the mind of a budding fusion guitarist. I don't think I'd have left, but only because I'd have probably been under the bleacher seats completely hashed and wiped out, as I was in ('71?) at the Black Sabbath concert, when Edger Winter and Yes opened for them. And I didn't have a car. As I and my Catholic schools mates were all without licenses, my dad, the Reaganite accordion playing dentist drove us to Winterland, SF , and actually sat through the whole show. (while we wandered and sampled). His low opinion of, and expectations for Haight Ashbury hippie culture were perfectly matched by Ozzie, Iomi's thunderous crunch and the long haired freaks (or narcs) going by. "anybody got any WEEEED for sale, man?" You shoulda seen his face. Oy. Poor old borderline John Bircher dad at a Sabbath show. in SF in 1971.
      In a cloud of smoke. Pretty absurd. He did say he admired Winter's skill on sax.

    I did sound for John McLaughlin in 1992 at Chez What nightclub in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He showed up and his roadie loaded in four amp and effects racks six feet tall each. Then with all those effects at his disposal the entire show John used only a basic distortion patch and a clean chorus patch, meaning he could have achieved his guitar tone with two little stomp boxes and a combo amp.

    hm now i hear how Sco , Stern, Robben et al just MIGHT have been led i this direction by not only
    BB, Hendrix and Abercrombie, but by McLaughlin too. that's some cosmic funky space time continuum ripping blues he's playing . Maybe my hearing speed finally caught up with his playing speed.YES, I am going to send some money to India. From here in the bubble/pig pen, with my first world problems. "wah wah wah" all the way home cried the little piggy. oink.
