My goodness - this is one of those "Holy Grail" of movie trailers. It's not that it is just a trailer for a notorious bomb, but this trailer is advertising the very engagement that was not to be - because the film was pulled right after the disasterous New York premiere and the 3 hour and 40 minute version never played the Plitt Century Plaza......wow. What a find. Thanks for posting......

Note: this screening was cancelled by Cimino so he could re-cut it from 3 1/2 hours to 2 1/2 hours after negative reviews at the New York premiere screening
but the commercial was done and shown before the cancellation

    Yes!!!
This is the original Cimino's very own advertisement!!!
UA hadn't seen it in advance, or was even asked if they liked it!!! They were forced to approve it!!!

This is great. Amazing how good the recording is for an old beta tape. I love the old movie trailers, especially for a notorious movie like this. Thanks for posting.

@JohnKoroly The Plitt Century Plaza twin(later a four screener in the mid '80s)was located in the ABC Entertainment Center in Century City. It was THE place(other than Westwood)for major Hollywood premieres. it closed a few years and is now a hotel. In fact, the entire complex(including a Shubert theatre)was demolished for high rise office buildings

0:08- So special, it did not happened, and was pulled after the disastrous New York premiere.
0:18- Give me one trailer that say "From the director of Thunderbult and Lightfoot." I prefer THAT movie.
0:28- Again, that didn't happen, but we have plenty of tickets leftover for Ulli Lommel's The Boogeyman.

Thanks for posting. I remember those "reserved tickets" when it opened in NYC. (Where in hell is Plitt, anyway?)

@moviedudeinc It was rated R chiefly for its realistically brutal violence, but also for some nudity. When the film went into production its writer-director had just won a number of Oscars for "The Deer Hunter", and expectations for high for a film of equal acclaim. However it went over schedule immediately and the budget rose from $11 million to finally close to $44 million - an astronomical sum in 1980. Its initial running time was over 5 hours, then cut to 219 minutes. Critics hated it

I suppose the Plitt Century Plaza went out of business after this

@robatsea2009 when was first shown, and the film was withdrawn and re-edited to 149 minutes. That failed too, earning only something like $3 million. The effect of this was it destroyed United Artists and ruined writer-director Michael Cimino's career. The film was restored to its 219 minute length for video and is on DVD from MGM at that length, and has been shown on TCM. In recent years many critics & fans have re-evaluated the film, and while some still hate it others greatly admire it.

It's such a shame that a promising director such as Cimino wanted to make the next film so extraordinary that unbeknownst to it, along with United Artists, were digging themselves a huge grave that would forever be one of the major Hollywood disasters of all time.

  • @moviedudeinc

Why is this rated R, where can I find this film in what version and I have heard that many people hated this film and was counted as one of the worst films of all time, why?

  • @scitsalcoryp
    @scitsalcoryp 11 лет назад

It was rated R for the use of the term fuck...and critics seem to be wrong about most things . Now it has been rereleased, for the 3rd time..the " Directors Cut "...and it is unanimous, Michael Cimino is insane . The director has elected to excise the entire reckoning scene at the end...leaving everyone hanging and the bad guys winning ( in simple terms ) . This is the Criterion collection....stay away from it . The original movie is a good movie...this is not it

And there's a fairly nasty rape scene.

This stridently anti-American film flopped because, by Dec. of '79, nobody wanted to sit through a 3 1/2 hours of euro-centric revisionist history. Especially with Isabel Huppert......

Probably didn't help. I think Year of the Dragon was more honest. Kristofferson character seemed so detached , like he really didn't give a shit about anything but the girl. Actually Walken seemed more in love with her. I think it was better received in Europe

Reserved performance ,sad. I guess this is for preview audiences that thought this was going to be a big deal
