So true. Just strictly speaking as someone who has health issues and dealt with many different doctors, I’m sure Ben Carson is a very skilled and celebrated surgeon. After seeing what he’s like outside that, I don’t know if I’d be comfortable with him doing surgery on me, but I’ve come across many surgeons or specialists who absolutely rock the field their in but can’t hold a conversation to save their life. They literally can handle what procedure you need, get it done, do it well, check on you a couple times after and never see them again. Just because someone is very smart and brilliant in one area doesn’t mean they’re well rounded individuals. I’ve also had doctors where I feel like they could be my best friend because they’re so approachable, compassionate and excellent in their field. Doesn’t mean that they would be qualified to hold a White House position, just means they’re good doctors. One has nothing to do with the other.

Ask any medical doctor and they will let you know that they are not only qualified for any job but that they are experts in literally any topic under the sun.
If you're smart enough to be a brain surgeon, you will always have above average wits in every of your life and be better than most people in most intellectual jobs excluding those who specialize in that particular field. Geniuses in a particular area are not genius in everything yes, but they are still really "smart" in areas that fall out of their expertise.

The job entails educating the public on health and scientific issues, being a spokesperson and giving out public health awards. S/he also has a boss besides trump that s/he has to report to. The only 2 Surgeon Generals I remember are: Dr. C. Edward Koop and Dr. Jocelyn Elders. Dr. Koop because he looked the part and inspired confidence in what he had to say; Dr. Elders because she spoke frankly about human sexuality and abortion and was fired shortly into her tenure.

But one can't help but wonder, just how good Carson really was as a brain surgeon anyhow? Did anyone ever look up what happened to all those patients he had operated on?
What isn't known is the separation of the conjoined twins in the 80's was a successful separation but the twins were basically in vegetative states. They never spoke, crawled or walked. Ben wrote a book about his brilliance called "MIRACLE HANDS". I wouldn't let that man operate on a cadaver.
To be fair, I kind of feel like he got screwed on his cabinet appointment. He was a neurosurgeon, so I always found it weird that he was given housing and urban development instead of health and human services, which is a topic I'd actually expect him to know about. He doesn't belong in HUD, but he was a world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon, and the head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins. To dismiss that is ludicrous. He just doesn't belong where he is now, he's obviously not qualified for it, and I don't understand why he would want to be there.
You know what they call the person at med school who graduates last in his class? Doctor. Maybe the ones who can't become cardiologists or plastic surgeons or something else good get stuck being brain surgeons.

Brain surgeon notwithstanding, Carson is just a very poor choice for HUD. For crying out loud, it's not brain surgery. It only goes to show that Carson obviously either doesn't bother to read up on the subject (before he applies for the job), or he's just a one-trick pony. To be fair, I kind of feel like he got screwed on his cabinet appointment. He was a neurosurgeon, so I always found it weird that he was given housing and urban development instead of health and human services, which is a topic I'd actually expect him to know about. Of course, knowing Trump, he probably went "Where should we put the black guy? Oh, this department has urban in its name, he probably knows all about that!"

He also separated type-2 vertical craniopagus twins, with both remaining neurologically normal. He is known for his use of cerebral hemispherectomy to control intractable seizures as well as for his work in craniofacial reconstructive surgery, achondroplasia (human dwarfism), and pediatric neuro-oncology (brain tumors).
